ORIGINAL: Zor

The new generations have missed the luck we old timers had to fly in such beautiful machines as the Stinsons.

As reported a few postings prior to this one I had my first airplane ride in a ''grown up Stinson''.when I was 11 years old.

Much later after I became a professional pilot I flew the Stinson 108 but nothing beats filling the cockpit with the sounds of a big radial.

Still popular for modelers are the Beechcraft stagger wings, the Fairchild 24, the De Havilland Beaver, and perhaps less popular but nevertheless beautiful machine like Mr. Molligan, the Tiger Moth, Fleet Finch and so many older airplanes that I can not remember all their names.

I am missing seeing a Nourduyn Norseman; A Canadian designed bush plane that helped develop the north country.

For me a model has to be a scale replica of what has been a real aircraft of previous years.
It does not need all the fine details in and out. It just has to look reasonably accurately like the original full size airplane and built proportionally.

I will be plastered to mention that a 3D foamy is not for me a model airplane.

No one has to be a modeler to enjoy flying small airplane unable to carry the pilot.

There is an aspect of the hobby to please and satisfy anyone.

Well I started dry sanding the primer and nexxt thing I knew I had REMOVED the side windows and made some changes.. I used 1/32 plywood to form the window frames and glassed them with 1 layer of carbon tissue and .06OZ glass over that . I placed the frames between a layer of wax paper which was placed on a glass surface and then weighted it down with some old school books .The frames are right on and NOW I will just glue the wside windows in place 'flush' with the fuselage and then carefully glue the 'finish painted frames over the windows .

I also simulated the metal panels on the forward fuselage and nose.and finishing up the wing fairings under the wing trailing edge. SO I 'm getting real close one problem remains I want to do this thing in over all gloss black with silver trim but can not find pictures. So any one reading this please post a (color)picture or two of an SR-7 or 8 in this scheme

The Stinson "SR-7" is painted its turned out better than I thought. The color is over all - W/ - trim and I will post pictures later this week. I have looked at several engines and its between the OS Gt33 & DLE 36RE which I'm getting now.

I'm looking forward to your pics, Richard.

I also wanted to bring you up to date on what I've done since we last "talked."

The Cessna Airmaster from last year's post has been completed.

In January, I started a Velie Monoprep. It's built from modified Doc Mathews plans.

This month, I had a set of 3 views enlarged, and I'm building a 102" Ryan Brougham from them.

Now, let's see your pics !

Tom,

It is nice to see some pictures of your builds and see that you are still building.
You are becoming an old pro .

Enjoy,

Zor

I'm about to get an engine (the choices are numerous) in the meantime between building another "1/7 scale Fighter ," I'm at least adding the non scale Top Flite instrument panl and the control yokes so here are a couple picturesand please note the metal ring in the first shot is from true Value or ace hardware in the plumbing department and what a great find for me as the Top Flite control colume was a joke ..and i sure admired any builder who could make sense of that vacuformed 2 piece assembly-

Hi Guys
First I hope you don't mind me sticking my nose in but I have been lurking in the background for many months and have very much admired the beatutiful work many of you have done with your builds and restorations.
I am currently scratch building a Stinson Reliant SR-8, 84 1/2 inch wing span from Royal Plans and it aint easy, however I am getting there. I recent purchased the cowl and wheel pants from Fibreglass Specialties and was very pleased with there service and quality.
The question I have you guys is - "What is the best method of attaching the wheel pants to the ally undercart?"

So far I have built the wings although alerons and flaps not yet cut out, the fuse is constructed and I have finished the instrument panel and are currently doing the cabin fit out. Even though mine is only 1/6 scale I am intending to put as much fine detail into it as possible with opening doors and luggage doors, full lights, etc etc.

Would certainly appreciate some info re the wheel pants.

Again sorry for intruding.

Not a problem as for your question I think it might be answered inside the TopFlite build manual .

Well I got the engine a DLE 35 RE looked it over an proceeded to mount it using their excellent design standoffs and an added 1 1/2" aircraft grade plywood spacer. I'm looking forward to firing this engine up;the only DOWN SIDE is it was not manufactured in the U.S.A. Here are some pictures.

Thanks for your reply Richard, I have now printed off the Topflite build manual so I will see how I go. Cheers.

As previously mention mine is a scratch build from Royal Marutaka plans which were originally drawn for a kit and not really for the scratch builder and as such have left out a lot of detail.

By the way your bird is looking pretty spectacular, you should be proud as she is a real show piece. Glad the engine fits so well, are you going to put a dummy radial in the front as well?

Kindest regards

Dennis

Richard,

What paint did you use on the plane? The finish really looks good.

Go with the FTE radial, it is 10 times the quality compared to the TF one, and you will need the weight anyway. If you don't mind, this is how it came out in my TF P-47

I know this thread has been dormant several months but I'd like to ask something.
I recently traded a partially completed 2.1 Thunderbolt for a fully finished Stinson. The plane had been flown once and I figure the owner felt it too much to handle. Upon closer inspection, I discovered several areas that I know contributed to his apprehension. Anyway, my point:
The right gear leg is "loose" from the fuselage. No cracks or other visible damage but it's not stiff like the left. I figure that 1st landing did hidden damage. Anyway...
I decided after removing the wing control surfaces and removing the covering that rebuilding these and correcting the incorrect geometry would be too labor intensive and the landing gear issue capped my initial decision to sell it "as-is".
However. It IS a beautifully big bird and the covering job IS outstanding. So.
Does anyone have any suggestions on how to minimize stripping the fuselage to get to the original landing gear and replacing as I have seen in previous posts here? Taking a blade to that fabric justs goes the wrong way and at $35. a roll, lol....
I got photos but figure y'all know what she looks like but if needed, I can post for sure.
Oh. The original owner did NOT install struts at all but did give me "some" of the ABS fairings if I wanted to add them. I suppose if I go to change the gear, I might as well add the struts....Decisions, decisions...LOL

Thanks everyone

I has been a while since building the plane but just looking at the prints in the manual, you might understand the structure of the landing gear mounting. It might be that the screws holding the gear in place are loose. Drilling some access holes to the screws might be a simple fix...if you are lucky. If you don't have prints or the manual, you can download the manual from Tower. It has prints in the last pages of the manual. Go ahead and post the pictures.

A GP Stinson is being built on another forum. The landing gear modification imploid by the builder would require extensive surgery on your bird. Since landing gear, and /or landing gear mount, failure is common on this design, I suggest that you open it up, and see what is required for the repair.
