Default HOB Micro Electric Cub

Hello all,

I purchased a HOB Micro Electric Cub kit over the weekend. Iactually had a customer come into my store (Wheat State Hobbies) here in Derby, KS. He came in to buy some gas tubing for his weedeater (happens all of the time). We got to talking and he had a Piper cub that his dad built 20 some years ago, it was electric. Long story short he was wanting to sell it so it would not get destroyed when they move. He brought it in and a 12 year old HOB Micro Electric Cub kit. I didn't but the complted Cub (yet) but I did pick up the kit.

What a wonderful kit! This is the first HOBkit I've ever built. It's kit # is BK-60. It is a Laser Cut kit, very nice. Everything went together quickly and straight! The wing in essence has a "built in jig" from how the parts were cut. It would be very hard for anybody to "screw up" this build. So far I've put in a combine total of maybe 8-10 hours over two days. She is ready for radio gear and another "lite sanding". Aftwards covering! This has been by far one of the quickest, if not quickest builds Ihave done!

I'm using a Rimfire 300 brushless as the power plant, I have not installed the speed controller yet so I don't recall what it is. The radio is a Spektrum 4 channel rcvr, the servos will be HS-55's or similar I'll have to see what Ihave in my "Box of stuff" that is in good shape. I'm trying to keep my expenses down so I'm reusing gear from previous models that are no longer with us! It'll have a 2 cell LiPo in it, again Idon't remember the size as it is not in front of me! I will post an update with all of the particulars on the components once Iwrite them all down. Teh covering will be Coverite Micolite Yellow, after all it is a Cub!

The build instructions (12 years old) calls for Ultracote, a NiCad or NiMh battery and a geared, brushless motor. It says the finished weight is 12oz and wing loading on the 160 sq in wing is 10.8oz / sq. foot. I'm thinking Iwill be knocking off anywhere from 2 to 4 oz from the finished weight so witha little bit of luck Ishould have the wing loading down in the neighbor hood of 8oz / sq. foot. Which would be great, as this plane is for my dad and his reflexs and eyesight are not what they used to be! He likes them large and slow. Well this one will not be all that large, 35" wingspan, but it should be somewhat slow for take off and landing and have enough thrust to kick it up a notch when needed. I foresee him flying it around a small lot next to where he lives at about 1/3 throttle. Which if my wing loading guestimates are close he will have a nice, highly visible park flyer!

I've attached some pictures of the plane as it stood last night when I got done. I used some of the scrap balsa to "hold"the tail feathers together for display purposes, so no those are not part of the model! The prop is just one I happened to have had layingaround, although I will be replacingit!

Bottom line, this will make one heck of a "Father's day gift"!

Hello all,

Time for a build update...

I did not get to work on my project as much as Iwould have like to last night. Idid get my electronics gear finalized. Although I may change out the ESC and or battery if I'm no happy with the final weight! Anyway onto the updates! So here is my list of the electronic gear!

Motor: Rimfire 300, 28-22-1380kV, GPMG4505.
Prop: Zinger 6x3, Ijust love the look of a wood prop on this plane!
ESC: SuperTigre Electric Power 20A, 2-3S LiPo-2A BEC Brushless ESC
Battery: Venom 7.4v 800 mah
Reciever: Spektrum AR400
Servo's: Hitech, HS-55's

Covering is Coverite, Microlite Yellow. After all it is a CUB!

I haven't done any covering in a couple of three years, but just like riding a bike, it does come back! Here is what Igot done last night after installing the servo's and dowel rods for the battery to set on. I'm hoping to have the whole plane covered tonight!

Build update #2......

Hello all,
Well I've had a couple of late nights (early mornings) this week and I'm pleased to say this build is almost done! Last night I finished covering the fuselage, wings and tail feathers. I haven't covered anything in a long time, it shows, but not that bad. Rounded wing tips are always hard to do! I still have decals/stickers to apply to the plane as well as paint and install the "dummy" engine heads. This was my first time at doing control hinges with the covering material. Next time I will pull out the Monokote covering stripper cutter and cut more uniform and smaller hinge pieces!
The motor and speed controller is back in the plane as is the rest of the electronic equipment. It's not all mounted yet and I may still swap out the ESC for a physically smaller one. I still need to make and install the tail wheel wire mount and install the tire. I need to ream out the prop shaft hole and tire holes just a "hair" more so that wheels rotate freely and that the prop comes off easily. I need to install the control rods from the servo's back to the tail feathers. As well as glue the vertical stabilizer/rudder and horizontal stabilizer/elevator to the fuselage. They are currently just setting in there.
The current weight is right at 8.2oz, a whopping 3.8oz less than the published final flying weight from the build plans. I'm estimating about another .3 to .5 oz's of weight with the finishing of the plane. If I swap out to a physically smaller ESC it would probably make up for this weight increase or possibly a net weight loss.
I also bounda DX5e to the receiver, this will go with the plane. Igotthis radiowith my Radian Gliderseveral years back and I don't use it much now becauseI have a DX8, whataGREAT radio! Anyway here are some of the photo's I took last night (early morning) with my iPhone. Enjoy!I do welcome any and all CONSTRUCTIVE advice!
Thanks,
Bill

Vicman,

Thanks! Yes it does look big, but if you take into consideration that this actuall kit was kitted back in 2001 or before and the plans call for a 6 cell, sub-c size nicd/nimh pack, it actually is quite small! The plans actually call for a 600mah battery, this is a 800mah. I may drop it to a smaller lipo to save on weight to get my wing loading down more, but we will have to wait and see how she flies. The plans call for a flying weight of 12oz, it is currently 8.2oz. At 12oz it has a wing loading of 10.8oz / sq inch, at 8.2oz the wing loading is down to 9.1oz / sq inch. Like Imentioned above i got some more work to do to get it flight ready. Once all of that work is done, Iwill then know the finish weight and wing loading. I may try the smaller battery and compare run times and if the run time is acceptable, Imay just keep it with the smaller battery. BTW I call an acceptable run time 10 to 15 minutes of nice peaceful flying.

Thanks!

Bill

I wasn't actually commenting that I thought something was wrong, it just looked big in the fuse.
10-15 min of flight time would be awesome.

Vicman,

Thanks for the clarification, although Ididn't take it that way! I was just trying to point out if you thought that was large you should see what was called for! I'm hoping to be able to test fly it this weekend if the weather is good. This is Kansas so you never know!

Thanks,

Bill

Build update #3
Hello all, I got more done to it last night after the attending the club meeting for one of the local flying clubs. I had a good show and tell of the Cub in what was it’s current state. To feel you all in, I decided to swap out the ESC to a Swift 20A from the Super Tigre, that knocked off ½ an ounce! The weight as of the meeting time was 7.7 ounces! Which makes the wing loading 8.55 ounces.
Last night I decided to do my initial test flying and trimming with the smaller 430mah Venom 2 Cell LiPoly. This decreases the weight by another .6/.7 ounces. Well enough of those changes lets press on to the build items that was completed!
I installed the pushrods for the control surfaces, I went ahead and install guide tubes even though they were not called for and made a bracket to hold them in place. I slide on the control surfaces temporarily to cut the wires to length with a little bit extra for trim adjustments. I think that turned out very well.
After that was done, I drilled out a hole in the plywood landing gear bracket to pass the motor/esc wires through as well as the switch wire. I wished I would have done that before assembly! When I did swap out the ESC, I cut the leads down by about half to help avoid any extra wire bundles! As you can see from the pictures I need to make sure the bullet connects are fully seated! I used a small piece of foam tape to hold the wires down next to the motor.
I mounted the receiver on the left side of the fuse at the top with a piece of double sided foam tape. I routed the long wire antenna down the side of the fuse and back to the pushrod bracket where I “sewed” it to the bracket. A little bit of thread is a lot lighter than a zip tie. You will also notice from the pictures that I also “sewed” the servo leads to one of the dowel cross brackets. After I made a few laps around the wires and dowel I put on a drop of thin CA to hold it in place. I did not CA the thread around the receiver wire.
Hooking up the receiver wasn’t too bad, a little tight and hard to see the labels, but very doable! I did use one zip tie to bundle up the receiver wires. I relocated the ESC to be farther to the left side of the fuse bottom. This left just enough space to “squeeze” in the 430mah batter vertically down the side of the right fuse. It fits in there “as snug as a bug in a rug” and the wing fits on perfectly like that. If I decide to use the larger battery the dowel rods are still in place for it!
Yesterday I did get the decals put on, they turned out very nicely! I had a friend print out the Cub image on sticker material. He matched the yellow around the Cub image as close a possible to my covering. Unless you are within a few feet you will not see the difference!
I have only a couple of more things to do. They are mounting the control surfaces, paint and mount the dummy engines. Then last but very important make sure the CG is right where it needs to be! If all goes well I’m planning on test flying it this weekend! Hopefully I will have some video of it I can post!
My flight goals is once I have it flying well is to have it trimmed so that it flies on ¼ to 1/3rd throttle straight and level and have power to maintain altitude during turns. Then if you want to loop it, just increase power and pull. In short, I want the final trim so that when it comes to landing, just throttle back, point it into the wind and let it settle in on it’s own through ground effect for a nice, soft landing with minimal elevator input!
I hope you have enjoyed these notes as much as I have had building this plane!

Also can you tell which controller is for use with the Cub????
Until the next update,
Bill

Build update #4

Well all she is all but done!!! The control surfaces are on, connected and centered. The dummy engine cowls are painted and on, although I am not a painter. The don't look great, just "OK". Which is ok, because that gives it character! The tail wheel bracket was easier than I expected and is on, I think the bracket looks pretty good. With all three wheels on it it looks like it is setup for "backwoods" flying!

I can't begin to tell how much fun this kit has been! I even did a "test" taxi with out the wing in my living room. A couple of things became very obvious. First I need to work a little bit more on the main wheel shafts, they are still a little too snug. They roll, but only with more thrust than I would like. The second thing is, that Ramfire 300 may be just a "bit" overkill in this plane! But that is okay, this way it *should* be able to "putt" around the sky at 1/4 throttle, give or or take a little!

I've also decided t use some carbon fibre rods in place of the dowel rods for the wing tie down. So tomorrow I replace the dowel rods with carbon fibre and verify/adjust the balance/CG and she will be ready for her maiden! I plane of having it video tape so expect to see it up here before too long!

Enjoy the pictures! (I will have to upload from my PC after I reduce their size!)

Update.......Final flying weight is 7.6oz's......More info coming soon!

Thanks,

Bill

Hello all,
MAIDEN FLIGHT!!!!!!!! http://youtu.be/TUUuYaZ673k(Low qual)
http://youtu.be/s73g9AqHeZc (HD Version)
3rd and 4th flights!http://youtu.be/yHfwkC2548c(Low qual)
http://youtu.be/eiXhofHWUco(HD Version)
I will add more notes to this later. The wind has died down even more, and I have plenty of charge left in the battery and plenty of daylight. I think another flight is in order!
Ok sun is down, kids are down, videos uploaded to YouTube, time to thttp://youtu.be/yHfwkC2548calk about the flights! The videos were not uploaded in HD, they were taken with my iPad and uploaded diretly out of the built-in app. I did not want to have the data size be 100 megs per upload. I may upload again in HD as it is too grainy in my opinon!
Any way lets talk about the filghts. The first "toss" was just below half throttle, wind was bouncing around between 7 to 13 mph roughly. The plane was still a little tail heavy. Yes I do have a CG machine, but did want to dig it out so I did the "finger" thing and tried to look at it from the side while holding it and said to myself "that looks pretty good". Well, it was still just tad bit tail heavy and it showed! I flew the plane about 4 minutes I wll have to look at the time index to know for sure. Most of the flight wasbetween 1/2 and 3/4throttle, higher than I was originally hoping for. Even at that power setting she was just "squierrly". Into the wind it would almost hover, with the wind to her back she zoomed down wind!
Just a little side note, I'm editing this in my iPad and for whatever reason when it scrolls down past the first screen full, it goes blank! I thought I had lost what I had just typed! So I did a select all and copy and then pasted it into "notes". Nothing loss! Now back to the flight logs...
Ok, after landing, it was a little rough, no damage, just not pretty! The grass is tall so it really softens the landings. Anyway I removed the battery and immediately put my battery checker on it, it had only gone down one bar out of eight!
After dinner I looked out at the field and my wind speed and decided that I had to get another flight in! Added another quarter to the nose hatch and the iPad to the wife and went flying again. What difference calmer winds make, but what a greater difference a little more nose weight makes!
This flight was much better! On this launch I set the throttle just over 1/2 probably closer to 65% as you can see from the videos, you just "lob" it into the air and the rest as they say is history! She fly quite nicely, gave it some "up" elevator trim and a little "right" aileron/rudder trim. When it's all said and done and the plane is flying just how I want it. I will "lock" control surfaces in place, turn off the plane and physically adjust the throw locations to be in the place of the trim.
Now she is starting to fly more like what I was expecting! She handled the wind quite nicely was able to "dodge" a bird or two that was insistent on picking a fight! Coming in to land was easy enough, I just pulled her around into the wind, throttle back and let her come on down. I did have to push her over just a little so I know the trim still is not how I want it. I will have to work on that. The battery levels after all 4 flights, roughly 9 minutes of flight, was at 5 bars, still in the "green". So it looks like my hopeful flight time 10 to 15 minutes will be accomplished!
The current propeller on it is a Zinger 6x3, I'm thinking about trying a different size. I would like to get it to fly around level at 1/2 throttle or a little less and still maintain a 10 to 15 minute flight time. The motor is a Rimfire 300. Does anybody have any suggestions?
In short I think this will turn out just like I hope! It's current "name" is "6 bits". It was "4 bits" before I add the additional quarter. I may try one more to see how it does. In which case the name will become "8 bits"!
Anyway enjoy the video from the links above and enjoy the pictures!
Thanks,
Bill

Hello all,

I tried doing an ROG take off today, the spot where I had to do it, just not right! On an angle and trying to take it easy and just really didn't work out to well..... Some minor rash on top of the ribs at each wing tip and a busted firewall where I didn't prep the surface good enough before glueing. Anyway that should be an area where I need to reinforce, which I have done! I think it would be best if this Cub is just hand launch! It hand launches very easy and besides my dad will not have any area's where he will be flying where he can ROG!

Thanks,

Bill

Side thought, since the firewall broke loose on a nose hard landing. I'm considering covering the nose section with a light fiberglass coat, to help prevent this happening again. What do you all think?

Thanks again,

Bill

Hello all,

Time for the final build update. It's done, after completing some minor damage "8 Bits" is ready to fly again! I really hope my dad enjoys it! Wind permitting here in Kansas I hope t do at least one more test flight before I "box" it up and wrap it for Father's Day! It's final weight was 8.2 oz so it's wing loading should be at roughly 9.1. So it will be a somewhat slow flyer and should have an endurance of 15 minutes plus! Incase you were all wondering why I've been quite the past week, I was out of town on business and had to devote my attention elsewhere. Any way attached are a couple of photos of the name on the plane. For those of you who don't know the reference, 8 bits is the same as a dollar, or in my case 4 quarters. Which was the amount of weight I needed to bring the plane into balance! I couldn't think of a more fitting name. Yes I know the image below only shows 3 quarters, I forgot to take a final picture with the last quarter attached. Anyway good night all! I will be sure to post my next build project, although I'm certain it will not be done this quickly!

Thanks,

Bill

Flight Update!!!!
Hello all, what a surprise tonight when I got off of work at 5pm. The wind had all but died down! What a surprise especially since at lunch it was blowing pretty good! Well we got the store closed up and headed on home. I pulled "8 Bits" off of the mantle, connected the battery and attached the wing. Walked outside into mid-high 90's, no wind backyard, which is directly connected to our High School practice fields. This was just about as perfect conditions you could ask for outside of the heat and bugs. Throttle her up to about 60% power and gave her a lob. She climbed out very steady and rock solid. She flies very scale like in my opinon. Not under powered but also not too much power either. Part of that is because of my wiring. I've ran the battery though a switch that has smaller gauge wire so it can't pull at max capacity from the battery. Knowing how my dad flies, it will be just fine.
After all I did build this plane for him so I had his flying style in mind with this configuration. I flew her around, back and forth, eleptical flight path, flat figure 8's etc... for just over 15 minutes. I even took her up to about 50' agl, pushed her over and pulled back hard. She really didn't want to loop, but she did. I was surprised by that. However again I know my dad's flying style and loops are not really part of it! So bottom line the plane is balanced well, flys straight and level at about 60% power.
Over the course of the flight towards the end I did have to continually increase throttle to adjust for the drop in the battery level. After landing when the plane was at full throttle and motor winding down and could not maintain altitude, I removed the wing and check for any "hot" components. As expected the motor, battery and esc were warm to the touch, but not hot. So this was good news, the ventilation that was designed into the plan was cooling everything adequately!
Once back inside I put on my "LiPo fuel gauge", and it told quite an interesting story. The battery did not discharge evenly. The first cell had about 80% and the second cell was down to about 15% to 20%. If the battery had discharged correctly the flight time would probably have reached 25 minutes without any troubles!
Well I really do hope my dad enjoys this plane as much as I enjoyed building it for him. Here's to many a long flights and joyous times!
Bill
