If there is anyone following this forum getting ready to build the Dauntless or anyone who is currently building a Dauntless but not yet building the superstructure, please PM me.

Thanks,

Bob

DF & Deep-
Thanks for the heads up on the roofs! Today I invested heavily in balsa stock and will modify roof before glassing. I also need to frame the bridge, put in bridge doors and raise the floor. I am trying to put off installation of both floors until I paint as I plan to stain both and cement them from underneath for a cleaner look. Almost got ahead of myself there. Glassing is on hold.

Steve,

Are you going to raise the floor by putting a floor above the existing floor or removing the existing floor and raising it?

You don't have to do anything to the roof...just epoxy the inside seam so that if you sand through the wood it is fine. Rich.

Then use epoxy on the outside to smooth out... hope this helps. Rich.

Hey Bob-
I plan to cut so bridge walls are 2 1/4 and flush fit floor underneath. I will make plank floor larger and trace around compartment and cut there.

Rich-
I will add wood so I get nice domed roofs ala Deep Sky page 130 post 3249. My Dentless as she sits is domed nicely at rear of main cabin roof but due to flimsiness of support 'P' is pertnear flat at windshield. This cannot stand. By the way, I cannot find a close up of your Dauntless broadside port nor starboard to locate swingingexit doors accurately.

Steve, what Rich is saying is that the cabin roofs on big D were not domed but had a gentle arch as Dumas made it. What dumas did not have you do was put a smooth curve transition from the top to the sides. See photo of big D and mine done as Dumasplans with the arched roof but no curve at the joints. Rich is saying you just need to round off those joints rather than build the roofs higher by adding material on top of them.

Hi Bill-Rich
Thanks for your input. Your pic of your yacht above shows a nice arch from side to side above windshield on main cabin. Due to my build error, mine is almost flat at windshield as shown previous page post 4570 pic 3. Dome was an inaccurate word. I want that arch side to side!! Mine has a nice arch at back transitioning to almost flat at forward edge. What I'm hearing from you and Rich is to sand an outside radius where roof meets sides? I'm guessing an eighth inch radius. Would you then attach trim just below radius?
Whilst messing with upper structure, I am mounting motors and really want to run this thing.
Thanks again
Steve

Yes...sand the 1/8 radius removing the sharp edges..and yes. Put the trim 1/8" below the top of the roof line.. Rich.

Hi captains,

Sorry that I have not been participating too much on the forum. Recently I started a new job and the training has been very intense...I don't have the luxury that I had at my old job where I could post at will.. I have been using my cell phone to chime in and it's very sporadic. Hopefully when we relocate life will settle a bit more.

Bill basically said it all in his post and my little comments basically reinforced his point.

The Dumas wood is 1/8" thick. When you take into account the thickness of the side wall and the thickness of the roofline you have enough to work with to 'erase' the sharp corners on the cabin sides. For the windshield more shaping needs to be done. So, per my comment above reinforce the inside seam with epoxy and sand the windshield to the roof in such a way that it slopes back and looks natural. Once the windshield is shaped put a layer of epoxy on the outside so that the finish will look nice.

For the trim, it should be placed 1/8" below the roof and for the windshield it gets more complicated.Try to keep it as straight as possible and try to avoid letting the trim ride up with the roofline. Here are pictures of my superstructure during various stages of shaping..This should be a good reference point to guide you.

-Rich.

On the full sized Dauntless the cabin superstructure or joiner-work as it was called was all wood and then covered in glue and canvas. When they made up the wood structure they likely used belt sanders to shape the cabins before coating it in glue and canvas.

Captains,

Attached are pictures of my "swimming pool" test. It is obvious she is "tail" heavy and I should remove most of the 4+ pounds of lead now sitting aft of the rudders, leaving a little on the starboard side to balance her laterally. The lead is in the form of 1/4 oz pieces in 12 piece seqments with adhesive on the back however they are not permanently attached, just neatly sitting in the cavity behind the rudders.

What's your thoughts?

Bob

Bob-
I remember reading this site about using waterline notated in Dumas plans, using laser level and ballasting to that line.

Captains,

O.K., I took ALL 4.25 pounds of the lead out of the aft endand put roughly 1 3/8 pounds into the starboard bow area to compensate for the port list. Attached are the pictures. Fore and aft balance point? Who knows. I have the feeling that if I try to balance her at 30% she'll ride VERY low in the water.

Now what do you think?

Bob, don't forget that, as you add more parts and details, the boat will probably need to be rebalanced. You may find that your final balancing will have little if any resemblance to how it's balanced now

Thanks Hydro Junkie and Rich,

I kind of gave that idea a "fleeting" thought, emphasis on fleeting.

The attched picture, besides showing the inards, shows the sparcity of Big Red at this time.

When I use SLA batteries I place one forward of the motors. The one you have labeled S. Mine floats pretty flat. Try that?

DF,

Thanks for your input. The two green rails you see forward of the motors is where the "P" battery originally sat. The "S" battery sat one rib space forward from where it is now. Since I took the original "P" platform and cut it down I'll need to cut a make one (no problem there) and sliding the "S" battery forward is not much trouble either, I'll have to see how it looks with just the "P" battery moved forward. If it needs a nudge more then I'll move the "S" battery.

We have grandchildren coming up from SC to visit this week end so sea trials will probably be put off until next week, unless I get "everything" done, which is sort of doubtful as the list seems to grow even though I keep knocking things offf it.

OK, I'm happy now. What I did was create a template that matched the arch at the rear of cabin roof. Thats the Tiara looking thing. I filled the areas with scrap and overlayed with filler. You can see where the center was raised 5/16 and tapered to nothing at either side. Gives you an idea how flat it was at front. Will soften edges when I frame bridge walls.
And I relented on the forward seating area. Now Grammaw has a place to sit and enjoy the seas coming right at her. Wrist and ankle restraints will be provided for her safety. Bless her heart.

Steve, don't need to read this early in the morning. Now i have orange juice all over the screen!!

Good job on the repair of the arch. Now I would guess a piece of trim anong the back edge would hide the different thickness side to side.

Bill-
Any day that starts off with a chuckle is a good day!

There is no difference in thickness on sides of the roof. What I did was scree the filler from original rear end to Tiara with straight edge (scrap and filler are also in area ahead of Tiara) , sanding to wood on both sides when necessary between coats. The whiteish areas you see on edges are original wood. Roof is straight end to end (fore to aft) only raising arch from front tapering to original back. Came out rather nicely. Looks as though I hadn't messed it up from the beginning.
Oy this boat! It is taking me over. It seems like it is all I think about. Great fun though. AND I have a Boothbay Lobster Boat whispering to me as well. Those plans have been my nighttime reading and I am still such a rookie.

Very funny!!!

I must say that the arch was nicely done! Very streamlined, Good stuff man! The curved roof, sides and the overall appearance of Dauntlessis referred to as 'rakish'..
