Seems about right, mine flys nice on 18Lbs.

I also have changed the differential on the Ailerons less on the down and it turns alot nicer now.

Well it dried out enough to get a second test flight of the TM with the new CG at 7 3/8 inches.  After a few min. of flight it had an engine failure, my test pilot set it down in the cow pasture and it flipped over, only the prop was broken.  I am 90% certain that the fuel fill line came off the stopper plug that is a part of the switch box.

Also after the flight a friend of mine picked something up off the ground where I had started the plane.  It was 12oz. of lead that had fallen out of the front of the cowl, the epoxy didn't hold!  So in fact the CG for this flight at about 7 3/4 or even 8 in., right about where Hangar 9 says to balance their TM.  My pilot said it flew fine, still needed lots of down elevator while inverted.  Elevators have a slight amount of down trim for normal flight.

Didn't have any problem with it wanting to nose over during taxi in the grass either with 4in. tires.  The manuals CG is waaaaaaay too far forward.

Video to follow after it uploads.

Here is the video of the second flight, not knowing that 12oz of lead had fallen out of the front of the cowl.  The CG for this flight is approximately 8 inches from the leading edge of the fake fuel tank.

Minor rant.  Who thought it would be a good idea to remove eye level  viewfinders from video cameras?  I missed the actual landing when the engine failed but caught just a glimpse of it on it's back.

Hi 600 Bob Thanks for the video. Will put my Moth back together and re balance. its warm today 29 F sunny and windy, blowing snow.
Nice break from a week of single number temperatures.
Have about a foot of the white stuff on the ground. The younger members of my club do fly off snow and frozen lakes and enjoy it.

My test pilot said it flew well and still didn't feel nose heavy, he thought it is my easiest plane to fly, he probably forgot how easy my Lazy Ace or 1/4 Cub are to fly     It will require the elev.. to have some down trim though.  Not surprising since the Hangar 9 TM flys with down trim as well, they designed it to act like a flying stab.

This is my test pilot flying his 40% Extra 260.  I had trouble keeping up with him at first.  My first attempt videoing with a new camera and sun glare on the view screen.

Hi Carl,

Just for you me old mate.[img][/img]

Install of the DLE 30. I beefed up the inside of the bulk head( for my own peace of mind) with 10 mm ply plate.

With the stand offs she fits just right as indicated in the book from bulk head to prop driver.

I purchased a rap around and it sits very nicely. Will run a 18 x 8 prop.

DB

Hi
I have just purchased one of these, very happy with the kit,
Was wondering about the distance for the engine from the Prop Hub to the Firewall. The manual I have is a little unclear, is it 160 mm ?
Thanks from 'DownUnder

I didn't measure the distance in mine,  The standoffs for the DLE 35RA worked out of the box.

On my Tiger Moth it is 6.5 inches or 165mm from the firewall to the spinner backplate.

Ozzieflyer, please post picks especially re engine mounting, muffler and cowl cutouts. I just purchased the Hangar 9 Tiger Moth 20cc, which I'm told is essentially the same measurements all around as the ECOMRC, I am thinking of using a Saito 180 (have it already) or the OS 22, but the OS GF40 does sound interesting.

You should here the OS GF 40.
To me the Tiger Moth HAS to have a four stroke, and the OS GF-40 OS is AWESOME.
Super smooth, tons of power.

Hi DB,
How did you keep your top wings together?
Are you relying on the rigging?

I was looking at fixing the Cabane structure so it is solid, then using some sort of bolt arrangement to hold the wings on, and do away with the rigging.

Can you advise?
Or others?
I have seen several others on youtube that are 1/4 scale without rigging wires, they seem ok.

Thanks,

Hi Ozzieflyer,

I secure the top wings on via the six struts in the centre section and the two outer supports, the rigging does give it more security plus the scale appearance.

I got my rigging from here, http://www.dbsportandscale.com/Bits-rigging.htm

They make it look even better.

Cheers

Thank you,
so do you pull both wings apart everytime to transport?
I am thinking it's going to take some time to rig each flying session.

I use the rigging to hold on the top wings, and I take them apart to transport. The rigging doesn't need to be adjusted each time, at least mine doesn't. It does take some time just because of all the screws.

You could replace the top center bolts with long threaded rod to tie the two wings together.

Long time coming, been distracted with other projects (family projects, birthdays, graduations, Daughter's wedding).

Here's how I mounted my engine, I have the engine offset slightly so it fits in the cowl nicely.
I mount the engine (I do this for all my gassers) to a 3mm aluminium plate, relieving holes in the firewall to allow the bolt heads for the stand offs, then bolt from the front into T-Nuts into good quality 7 ply.

The theory is its easier to tighten up the firewall bolts, as its all from the front, and easier to take the engine out if required. So far it has worked perfectly, I've used in all my engines, including my OS GT 60 in a mustang, and I have found it easier to check and keep the firewall bolts tight, and not have to argue with getting your hand inside the fuz behind the firewall to tighten up the bolts.

I have made my wings plug in removable as an assembly, the flying wires are actually 2-56 rods.
It fits in my car perfectly, and I can assemble in about 5 minutes.
The flying wires are set up to be working.
I replaced the carbon wing tubes with Aluminium, a size that was smaller by about 0.06 mm, so was easier to slide off the wings, but still snug. I put a screw into the top wing joiner to help keep the wings together.

Didn't think much of the supplied wheels so have replaced with 4.5 inch Dubro's, had to change how I mounted the wheels, have used a brass sleeve that then is tightened onto the undercarriage. I also cut off the front undercarriage wire, and shortened it enough to kick the wheels forward by 20 mm, as I have seen my mates Tigermoth (same model) and we feel it was not far enough forward. He did it to his first, and it really helped on the nose overs, and moving the wheels 20 mm forward is not really noticeable, unless you are going for 100 percent scale.

Any way, enjoy the pics, hope it helps someone.

Hello everyone !

I just started the build and I got to the point where wanting to glue in the struts fixtures in the wings. Apart the fact that is not quite easy to figure out which fixture fits where, the manual says that epoxying the parts should be done with the wings installed on the fuse, i order to make the fine arrangements needed for a proper alignment.

Did you done it as in manual ? Can you please provide some hints about which fixture goes where, apart from the gas tank ones, where is clear enough.

Thank you !

It has been some time since I did mine. I did not assemble the wings to glue them in. Is there any difference between the pieces? I can't tell by looking at them after being installed. Maybe some are longer? Put them where they fit best. The ones in the bottom wing point forward, the ones in the top wing point to the rear.

My T Moth hardware pack was missing 2 of the struts fixtures (top of the first image) but came with extra 2 larger fixtures which according to the manual will go in the central part of the upper wing. The only thing to do is to grind down the larger ones. That is feasible, as you can see in the second picture.
