RE: Eindecker EIII
I like your "brass blade" you have in your tail skid.........I did not do that on mine because I thought it would cause too much side load on the mounts..........because of the length of the fuse....there's a little bit of weight back there.
WTH.....who am I to give advice to MR EINDECKER!
You were flying Eindeckers back in the day when most of the people (like myself) thought eindecker was some kind of lunch meat sandwich!

I don't know how it is for you boys flying off those sweet mid-western grass fields, but on my field, if I didn't have a bit of metal on the end of my skid, I'd have to be replacing the skid every couple of months.

Turtle Report:
I finally started on the rigging. I have the front landing wires cut and fit on both wing panels.
There are 30 landing, flying, control and rigging wires/cables on this model.
Remember at the beginning of this thread? I was a little giddy because this design wasn't supposed to need the flying/landing wires........it was (for me) to be a quick and easy to assemble every day kind of flyer........
Who am I kidding? I wouldn't have flown it more than a couple of times before I decided to put all the wires on it anyway
It certainly looks a lot better with than without the wires!

RE: Eindecker EIII
Art and anyone else,
Attached are pages from McMaster-Carr of their wire and sleeves and also what you can order from Vogelsang.
How do these wires compare to each other and to what Balsa USA sells.
Art,
I see that you are using the rigging couplers, What diameter wire are you using.
I would like to use the 3/64" wire for all of the rigging and pull/pull cables.

RE: Eindecker EIII
I have several coils of Balsa USA 3/64 cables - their third scale wire. The one I am using with the rigging couplers is less flexible than the other wires and fits through the hole in the coupler without any problem; however, the other wires are more flexible and goes through the hole with great difficulty.
I don't have enough rigging couplers to finish the flying/landing wires, not to mention the pull-pull cables for rudder and elevators. I also don't have enough of the easy fitting cables to finish the flying wires. I guess I will go to the solder on threaded couplers to finish the flying wires.
I like the look of the rigging couplers much better than the solder on threaded couplers......but they won't show on the flying wires which attach under the wing.
Plus they are much easier to install - no soldering - just crimp and go!

Maybe no dummy engine (yet), but my good friend, Paul, did come through with some excess rigging couplers and Sullivan clevises. THANK YOU.
Just curious, but where did these couplers come from - Vogelsang or Teus? They have a greater thickness at the hole where the cable attaches - much more substantial than a Dubro rigging coupler. I like these much better.
some pictures to follow:
I put in the drag wires for the king post.......
For attaching the flying and landing cables I made long bolts by soldering nuts onto 4-40 all thread which will fit all the way through the wing and then use nylon insert lock nuts on the bottom of the wing to hold on the flying cables......I am still in the process of fitting the rest of the cables for the wing.

RE: Eindecker EIII
The landing gear saga continues.
After being unable to find someone locally that was interested, able or even understood what I wanted, I have taken the plunge and started to make my own gear.
I acquired a wire bender from Micro-Mark tools that seems to do the job. I ordered 1/4" and 3/16" music wire from Tower Hobbies and got some Sta-Brite silver solder to
do the soldering.
I started the process by doing a detail plan view of the front section of the gear and the rear v-shaped section and then plotted them at full scale.
I then took each of the pieces that are bent and laser cut some 1/8" birch plywood to use as a jig so I could check the shapes as I was doing the bending.
This seemed to work pretty well and I know that I would not want to do this without this jig.
Next I need to cut the flat pieces out of sheet stock, using the cut outs from the jig.
Attached are photos of the progress so far.
I don't like working with metal and this part of the project, to me, is a royal PITA.

Looks like you are making pretty good progress on your landing gear, Larry.......lots of soldering to get through before you're finished.
TURTLE REPORT:
I now have all the landing and flying wires completed, installed and adjusted........
Next on the list of 20 plus items.......pull the wings off - clean up the shop - then remove the landing gear and clean them up and add the brace wires.......notch the axel so the wheel collar set screws stay in place - then on to the tail, finishing up the tail skid and tail skid braces, hinging the elevators and rudder - then add the control cables to same.
.........and on and on it goes - the goal is to enter Fun Scale with this plane at the Scale Nationals (12, 13 & 14 July) - that's just around the corner.
Me and Larry are going head to head, er, make that Plane to Plane.......
Later.

I JUST GOT A MYSTERIOUS PHONE CALL! ......... ok, just settle down a bit......... breathe in - breathe out.......ahhhhhh, that's better.
to make a long story short - I just got a visit from the airplane fairy! at least, I think that's who it was..........must have been.
back to the phone call, Hello Art here - who? Horse Power Aviation........why ain't I in the shop and why isn't the cowl mounted..........
well, the cowl is in Cinciny, right? No, what do you mean NO!
What ! In my shop? really? REALLY!
I go out there and bada boom bada bing, there it is in all it's bling!

I'm thinkin' that if I leave it alone tonight, then when I wake up in the morning it will be fitted to the airplane, along with the motor and all the other stuff it needs for the maiden!

But (there's always a but!)......... but if that doesn't happen then I have composed a list of the count down items to completion. Periodically I make a list because I sometimes forget what I'm doing and this serves as a good reminder for me. I don't have "mount the cowl" on the list yet as I am still hopeful the fairy will stop by tonight and at least do that for me.[8D]

#5 Cowl ring...........you know, the place where the cowl mounts........that ring of plywood around the firewall.......because the cowl is heavy (mine weighs 2 lbs 2 oz) I want to epoxy on an additional 1/2'' layer of plywood all around for the cowl to rest on and the screws to screw into.
