RE: Corsair F4U-1A Top Flite Giant ARF Modifications
These three images show my layout of all the internal systems.
In the wing I have the UP-3 air valve system and the light system with switch and charging jack. The battery is a 6volt 2000 MAH and also installed in the wing forward of CG.
I now have four switches and charging jacks. I had planed on only two.
This switch and charging jack in the wing is for the lights only. During a flight day I’ll turn it on as I connect the wing. I’ll leave this on, as the battery is only being used when I turn on the lights from the transmitter.
The other three are for the ignition and two for the receiver(s).
The first receiver is for the main controls (9) channels and the second receiver (8) channels.

Hi guys! There is some beautiful work goin' on here no doubt
I am about to purchase my Corsair....I know I have nowhere near the skill or patience to accomplish the scale features that you guys have but other than painting the wingtips and such are there some simple weathering tips that you guys would recommend?
Again, stunning work guys!!

Hello Spence,
I plan on weathering my plane here. I have general ways I go about this and I'll demo here. Stay tuned. However, I still have a lot to learn.
I first build and paint a clean and new airplane. Then add weathering. Some say not the way to go. I like my plane to be weathered just not to heavy.
I'll start first by adding silver and aluminum for chipping areas. Then add grim as in oil and gas. Then dirt and or mud with dust. Finally I'll add smoke, like exhaust and gun smoke.
Before I start I gather all the real photos I can find and study them. I also print them out so as to look at while painting.
I sure welcome any and all other ideas as well.
Michael

Sure Bob T,
I just hope it comes out well.
The goal for this weekend is to get the main colors on and finished.
So it looks like two week or just after Fathers Day will be the time start weathering.
Sorry I'm not faster.

RE: Corsair F4U-1A Top Flite Giant ARF Modifications
I have been away for a couple of reasons.
One, I sold my CompARF Corsair and the very next day it was stolen! I have been sick from this. I know I have been paid, however, I had always thought I would see it and my work, fly some day. I hate thieves so much!
Second, I wanted a float plane so I decided that I would put my Bravata from AreoWorks together. It was hard to look at a Corsair even my Top Flite as my thoughts turned to my CompARF.
So I have now built and flown my Bravata. I placed an O/S GT33 gas engine into the 112†wingspan. The floats are on back order and so I flew off the ground.
Well I’m back working on the Top Flite Corsair. Photo 1 is the plastic half moon shape strips. I use these to make fake hinges for the hatches on the fuselage.
Photo 4 shows that with a pencil I mark 1/8†marks onto the plastic strip.
After cutting the strips with slits, I cut to length and then glued them to the fuselage with CA.

The first three images are of my completed main gear and doors. The forth photo is of my leading edge of the horizontal stabilizer. While loaded into my trailer this leading edge received some hanger rash. So photo 4 show the bondo patch before sanding smooth.

RE: Corsair F4U-1A Top Flite Giant ARF Modifications
This post shows the under side of the wing’s progress. I have already painted the center section white and now it is time to primer and cut the exit holes for the gun shells.
After making all the (four) control rods, cleaned and painted them as well as the wing tips.
In photo 4 I show that I used my vinyl graphics to layout the gun exit holes. I then used my Dremel saw and cut along the long edges. Using a blade I cut the shorter sides.
Then again with my vinyl graphics I made frames. Applying these makes the outline and inline clean and sharp.
After applying another coat of primer and letting it fully dry I painted the intermediate blue. In photo 12 you can see the line that was masked. Notice the middle gun exit hole , it lined up over an internal rib. I’ll paint this black after I paint the smoke of the exit of these shells.

RE: Corsair F4U-1A Top Flite Giant ARF Modifications
Now with the wing painted and the masks removed from the navigation lights, it was time to apply the star and bar. This time a decided to try a water slide transfer verses making my usual paint masks. It was not that hard to apply, however, when cutting out the navigation light and the panels I now remember why I prefer paint. The cut outs are not as clean as paint would have been.
Photo 2 shows the star and bar applied. I used Windex to float the decal onto the wing. Once moved into the correct location I applied pressure from the center outward. This flattened the decal and moved out the excess Windex.
After letting the decal completely dry, I cut the panels and the servo exit areas and the navigation light.

Again, very sorry for the loss of this great plane. If no one else knows, God does, and thieves will get their just deserves eventually. I'm confident of that.

Mike,
Have you posted the serial number of the engine? There are not that many of these out there, not a Zen G38 so we should be able to find it eventually. I would be happy to check the SN of every Moki 250 I see out here.

Whit,
Thanks for your effort here is the serial number of the Moki engine that was stolen.
Moki S250 Radial engine SERIAL NUMBER # 250560
It was mounted to the CARF Corsair with a solo prop hub painted black and the front spinner was yellow. The blades were carbon fiber also painted flat black with scale blade info, Hamilton logos and yellow tips on front only.
I still get sick thinking about it.

Also please note:
Here is the link that shows lots of photos of the last state of this Corsair just before it was stolen. I had even included my CompARF jacket.

So sorry Mike S. for your loss.

RE: Corsair F4U-1A Top Flite Giant ARF Modifications
Photo 1 is of the top wing just after shooting another primer coat. After having to repair the horizontal stabilizer I noticed through the paint you could see a patch of bondo on the top wing.
I simply could not live with it and also since I was repairing and painting the stab. I chose to redo the top right wing.
Photo 2 and 3 shows the repaired, primed and painted stab.
The remaining photos show final paint on wings.

RE: Corsair F4U-1A Top Flite Giant ARF Modifications
As in my earlier post I showed the water slide decals, however, in this post I show the steps. In photo 1 I prep the wing by wiping off any grease with a tack cloth. Next I double check with scale documentation as to proper location. In photo 3 I locate the panel lines that assist in location of star and bars. Next using Windex I spray a good amount onto the wing.
I spray Windex onto the graphic as I peel it from it’s backing.
I then attempt to place the decal as close to the correct location as possible. Next I quickly do the fine adjustments to place the decal in the correct location. Movement here is difficult as the decal can tear. Also if not quick enough the decal can stick.
Once in the correct location I use paper towels to pat dry the area outside the decal. Then lightly pat dry the decal. If you pat to hard the decal can move and possibly tear.
Take you time and using a paper towel lightly push onto the decal from the center outward in all directions. You will see Windex coming out from the decal’s edges.
Once the decal and surrounding ares look some what dry use a credit card with a soft edge to press out more Windex. Again start from the center and work outwards. See next post for this step.

This is a continuation from the last post. In photos 1 and 2, you can see the plastic card with the soft edge. I got this card along with the water slide from Cal Grafx.

RE: Corsair F4U-1A Top Flite Giant ARF Modifications
Now that the stars and bars are on it is time to add the nomenclature. I prepared the words on my computer and then sent my file to ProMark. Then then in turn made them into dry transfers in black and white per my request.
In photos 1, 2 and 3 I locate where all the labels are going to go. As planed I made extras so as if some failed I would have enough to finish the plane.
The remaining photos show the process of adding the dry transfers. Notice photo 6, I wanted to show my heat gun. This is important as to have good clean and shape transfers you need to heat the area where the graphic goes and then quickly the backing of the words. After warm apply graphic as you normally would.
Once you have rubbed on the dry transfer slowly peel off the backing of the transfer. You may have some wax residue, however, this is ok just don’t try to wipe it of yet. You need to let the dry transfer dry first and then using a paper towel and some alcohol you can clean off any wax that came off during the transfer.

As I worked until midnight I had to stop and get some sleep.
I did not get the plane finished with the engine or the nomenclature.
However, I still wanted to take it out to show my club.
Here are some outside photos.

Michael , Great job it's no longer or can be called a ARF. I can't think of anything to compare it to other than a full size. Hope the rest of the steps and engine run go well. John T.

Thanks Mike,
I'm going to fly this Top Flite Corsair all the time. This was my practice plane for the CARF. Oh well. I have a Zorlli Corsair, Zero and Hellcat that is next on my build list.
Thanks again for your comments.

Thanks John,
I'm just about to do the weathering. I think the plane is to clean now. What do you think?
Yes I'm looking forward to starting engine and my first flight.
Thanks for your support.
