Look where ''Lucky Pierre'' Showed Up...
Look where ''Lucky Pierre'' Showed Up...
Just to clarify, the gong is a motivational device to encourage pilots to improve their landings. It's all about the landing, not the flight. Any bouncing, porpoising, skidding, ripping out gear, off-runway, etc style landing may be gonged at the discretion of anyone near the gong at the time. In order to qualify, the incident must occur during a landing. A committee of pilot/judges meets each evening (generally over margaritas) to discuss the day's contenders. A winner is chosen at the end of the week and full details of the "landing" are provided when the award is presented. To give you an idea of what it takes, here's what happened to last year....
Bob flew a PCM L1011. First of all, you have to give the guy a lot of credit just for having the nerve to build one of these things and bring it to Kentucky (or anywhere else in public) as they are notoriously difficult to fly. Well, Bob did a lot of work on the plane and it looked great. Off it went into the wild blue yonder and he flew it around like the professional he is. Well, then it was time to land. He got it all lined up on the glide slope, wings level, descent rate perfect, closer, closer, and then at an altitude of about 6 inches, it all went to crap! Stall, snap, crunch down, gear through the wings, bounces nose high, wham bang boom, jet all busted up, turbine rolling down the runway......
OK, I might have exaggerated a bit, but you get the idea.

Once again, the gong will be in attendance at Kentucky Jets and I'll be sponsoring the Special Recognition - Gong Award. Below is a photo of last year's winner Bob Klenke for his PCM L1011 ''landing''. In addition to receiving the award, winners also sign the back of the gong to immortalize their efforts.

This year, its time for someone else to win the Gong award - although I do expect to be the recipient of more than one "sounding" I *don't* want to be crowned the "grand master" of the bad arrival...
Now what I want to know is if we have to watch Lewis give away *all* of those wheels...
"... and the winner of the 1 and 1/2" wheel set is ... "
