Good deal guamflyer,
My little helper and I spent Fathers Day (well Saturday before) in Texas at the Texas Warbirds event. Can't wait till I can sit back and watch him make low passes while I sit in the shade and drink tea.

I took some time out of my day Sunday to tune the 3W-85 in the Ziroli P-40. Number 1.5 and I have been busy putting in a new runway this past weekend since our current field’s property was sold. I plan to fly it this weekend, so I will take some photos.
For now here are some pics of the construction me and 1.5 are involved in. He is getting pretty good at operating the equipment, with my help of course.

Sorry to hear your club lost the flying field.[&o][&o] Look like 1.5 is having fun. Is the new field on your property???

I am getting ready to build a TF 1/5 Scale P-40 and was wondering if you guys could give me a honest opinion. I am going between the DLE-55 with wrap around pitts or the DLE-55 rear exhaust. I have heard the rear exhaust muffler is junk and is falling apart on guys and I'm not sure if there is an aftermarket, better exhaust for it yet. Does a standard wrap around pitts like a slimline fit inside the cowl without cutting a hole in the side if a guy goes with a side exhaust? Also, what is a great, scale pilot to use in the P-40. Iwould also respectfully request to be added to the fine list of flyers already in the squadron.

Blainer 48, if you want a great looking pilot for your P-40 I would recommend Best Pilots. They have a few choices that look good. [link]http://www.bestpilots.typepad.com/[/link]
I used the Bob Sweeny pilot to stand in as a Dallas Clinger in my Zirolli P-40. The Zirolli is 1:4.8, so he's a bit small. You can paint the pilot yourself (as I did) or order it pre-painted if you like.

Question to everyone - I found this perfect condition, still in box, Skyshark and Revolution motor for a great deal. This plane is much bigger than I have ever flown.
This is my first big build and also moving to gas engine from electric so I have much to learn.
For planes of this size do you recommend I have someone else fly the maiden flight to make sure everything is working good and to help trim it out?
Is there a way, other than simulator to practice prior to flying it? Maybe a similar foam plane?

Too much Plane for you, send it my way and I will give you a foamie....just joking...couldn't help myself; Not a bad idea to get someone to maiden it for you that flys Giant Planes and have someone on hand to take over the controls if you are uncomfortable...put it on a buddy box if your not too embarrassed.

This plane is not the easiest of Warbirds to fly, i.e. takeoff and landing. Takeoffs will require good skills on the elevator and rudder control. I need full up elevator at the beginning of roll out on takeoff and then you must reduce this once the tail is up. Definitely need right rudder to compensate for torque as well. It does not glide well, landings require power on until your ready to set her down. My buddy has one and it flies the same way. The Revolution motor is a good size for this bird and the good news is there's plenty of room in the cowl for air baffling. Guys who had trouble with the Rev 52cc were putting them in Top Fiite P-51s. A lot less room for baffling so Revolution developed a fan for that application. In the air the plane flies on rails. I have a G62 in my and it's a rocket.

agree with the above, hence why I put a JR 460-T gyro on my old departed TF P40 slaved to the retract channel. Retracts down gyro gain set to 85%. Retracts up gyro gain set to zero. Worked very well amd made takeoffs much easier. cheating? Hell yeah
Will get to building my 96" Model Design P40 at some stage. Custom Retracts from here in Oz, 3W-75 in the nose, scheme will be RAF north Africa with shark mouth.

The Skyshark P-40 is awesome in the air...but you should consider yourself somewhat of a "hot" pilot before flying it. It requires really good takeoff and landing skills. Once in the air its fast and stable but it is a big heavy plane and must be flown accordingly...no yanking and banking like with a light sport plane.

I have not heard of using a GYRO in a plane. I "assume" it keeps the plane stable.
What type woudl you suggest for my P40 - cheating only counts if u get caught or crash while cheating

Turnigy/Hobbyking used to sell and inexpensive gyro. About $17 as I remember. I used them in my P-40's as they have a narrow wheelbase. Helps to keep it tracking in a straight line when there isn't quite enough air over the rudder. I think there are several other manufacturers retailing them. Got the idea from a local turbine flyer.

On a helicopter the gyro keeps the tail from swinging left to right....same with an airplane. On takeoff if the plane starts to swerve the gyro corrects to keep it going straight. On the Skyshark P-40 and most other big powerful planes the correct method is to increase throttle slowly and let the plane build up speed before trying to get it off the ground. As speed increases the rudder becomes more effect. If you slam the throttle forward and try to jerk the plane off the ground it will roll to the left quickly.
I've been flying these things for 50 years and I still did it wrong on my first flight with the Skyshark. I hit the power too fast and didn't use enough right rudder. The plane veered 30 degrees to the left and the left wing was almost dragging the ground. I recovered but just barely.

Gyro is mounted inside the fuselage, closer to the center of gravity, I mount mine slightly behind the Center of Gravity; I will add that, I have a Gyro on all my Tail Dragging Warbirds and care less if people say I am cheating, I'm not about to waste a great warbird on some wayward take off because these planes are notorious for crazy take offs, which my Gyros correct.
