RE: KAOS AND RELATED PLANES AND INFO
The airplane should be fine... you might want to try a Jett muffler on your OS. I was impressed when I saw that combo running last year.

RE: KAOS AND RELATED PLANES AND INFO
Would the Jett muffler qualify for the SPA? Does anyone know how the Mac's mufflers perform? I'm talking about their bolt ones that are in the shape of a header pipe. I could always remove the tuned pipe and bolt a muffler on for SPA.
Thanks,
J

RE: KAOS AND RELATED PLANES AND INFO
I was using a MACS muffler on my Webra Speed .61 powered Dirty Birdy at the SPA contest in Asheville last summer. A couple of other flyers were using the canister style Jett muffler on their OS side exhaust engines. So by direct observation, I saw the OS's clearly out perform my Webra. They're ugly, but they do work! I'll be putting one on my Webra this year.

RE: KAOS AND RELATED PLANES AND INFO
Been using MACS for most of those 35 years. In fact I still have the one that I used in the 74 Nats. That one got me kicked off the flying field last year (too noisy). Fortunately, there is another club in my area that has a pretty isolated flying field. No noise issues there, and I no longer belong to the first club.

RE: KAOS AND RELATED PLANES AND INFO
If this is the Macs muffler that you are talking about, it is not a performance muffler. It is a lightweight replacement for a stock pipe.

On the other hand, this is a performance pipe.

Here's what it looks like.... no, I don't know why my fuel line is not connected to the engine..... I'm guessing that the photo was taken before the airplane was ready to fly.

RE: KAOS AND RELATED PLANES AND INFO
Guys
Been trying to track down a PDF version of the original Kaos plan and I see Rainedave offer a PDF back at post 138.
Dave doesn't seem to be around much anymore to I was wondering if someone could e-mail the pdf that they may have obtained from Dave.
Just need to build one to go with the Kwik Fli III and my current build of a Sun Fli Mk 4.
I was going to try RCM but with all the delays you guys are having, it's more difficult to chase them up from Aus if they fall back into the delays they are experiencing
It throws them at my field as most of them are flying gassers.
Any help would be appreciated,
Cheers from Aust

RE: KAOS AND RELATED PLANES AND INFO
With the unfortunate demise of my Focus Sport (one 120AX dead-stick too many [:@]), I realize I need another pattern plane. One of the top fliers at our field flies and competes with various versions of the Kaos and Dirty Birdy. I have a Tower Kaos 40 kit that has been gathering dust in my garage for years, and a spare 46AX so think this would give me an economical pattern plane to improve my flying. It's probably 40 years since I built a kit but, except for the covering, I'm looking forward to it.
I'm looking for some ideas on how to improve or at least not diminish the flying performance and appearance. Some ideas are:
* two aileron servos mounted so only the arm projects out of the wing
* although I love tail-draggers, I've decided to stick with the tri gear
* side-mounted engine rotated so the muffler is close to the nose gear
* fair in the nose to a spinner (2&1/2" or 2&1/4")
* probably use a Tower .46 muffler I have on hand, depending on some tests I'll be doing on one of my planes
* pin firewall
* 11 x 5 APC prop
* ball-end links on rudder pushrod
* carbon-fiber pushrods
* small wing fairings
* paint fuselage and tail after thin (3/4 oz) fiberglass and epoxy (weight?). Ultracote on wing
Any other suggestions? I've been through this whole thread! Thanks to all of you for some interesting reading and inspiring photos.

Here's one. Add 1.5" to the bottom of the rudder with tapered vertical stab about 5" long before the extension.
The Kaos was not designed for knife edge flight and my 40 had trouble in this department. This gave my 40 sized plenty of rudder to accomplish the maneuver.

RE: KAOS AND RELATED PLANES AND INFO
Stick with the plan and go with one aileron servo, nothing protrudes from the wing, and saves weight.
Forget about carbon fiber rods, ball links, and save the money.
Use Super Mono-coat on the tail, wings, save weight and money.

You can see the fin under the rudder (barely) showing what Rougedog is saying, helps with knife edge.

RE: KAOS AND RELATED PLANES AND INFO
Exactly!
Here's my Kaos with the mod.
As far as using one servo for the ailerons use a beefy servo if you will be flying with a tuned pipe. I stripped the plasitc gears of a futaba 3004 in a high speed dive. Right before it stripped the gears the aileron flutter sounded like a mini A10 Gatling gun for a second then strip.
I replaced the strip aileron setup in mine with two servos in the wing. I simply made a square ply plate and epoxyed a couple of hardwood rails to the ply plate with a slot for the servo control horn. The pic shows a round one but I used a star horn.
I also use a pull pull setup for my rudder.

You are receiving excellent advice, use it all and you will have one of the best fun planes you have ever flown.
I Keep a couple Kaos's in my shop and will add the sub rudder to all of them, One thing if you keep the gap on all control surfaces as small as possible and or seal them flutter wont occur with tight linkages. One servo is more than enough.

I hope this isn't seen as blasphimy, but I have a Great Planes Kaos kit on the workbench. It has a 58" wingspan, and is intended for a .60 glow engine. I'dd like to electrify it and make a few additional changes. These are:
Mount landing gear on the fuse in tail dragger fashion
Mount two small servos in the wing for ailerons
Mount two small servos in the tail for elev and rud.
Lighten up the whole model where possible
Move forward bulkheads to support electric motor and battery
Build a larger top hatch to support battery placement and changes without removing wing
Has anyone else built a successful electric Kaos that can share some good ideas I've likely missed?

Here's mine. Silk and dope, Veco .61 power with a Kraft Series 79 two stick and four KPS-14 servos. Built stock per the plans from a Lazer Works short kit. It came out at 6 lbs. even and flew off the board with minor trim changes.

Doing a Knife edge maneuver may be a little tougher. On my Utter Kaos 40 I had to add an inch to the bottom of the rudder and bottom fin get get it to knife edge. Worked great.
Someone here on the threads said that the Kaos and Super Kaos were designed and built before they had that as a maneuver for competition.

Well, I had a good day almost. 50/50. I managed to get my Tower Kaos maidened. This was my first low wing airplane. The kaos only needed a click of left trim in order to fly good. Trimmed out my son's trainer. Unfortunately I lost it (son's plane) at the far end of the farmer's field. It was a very long walk from the crash sight to the pits.

Here are some pics of my Killer Kaos complete. Os 61 FX, retracts, 7 lbs with tail weight. That FX is heavy. Could stick a 90 on it but no room for the prop. Got 3 flights on her. Rock solid! Performance is good with the FX still running rich and yet to settle on a prop and cg. Someone asked me how it flys? I took my hands off the trans and it flew a straight and level line all the way across the field! These Kaos's are great flyers. Here are some pics. Still adding trim to it and got to tint the canopy yet. I like the way it came out in the night pic, Any good tips?

J
