Hi Kim,
Go Tamiya all the way.... cheap, easy to build, fix and setup, plenty of cheap spares and hop-ups around and if you want to race then most of the official formulas are Tamiya only.
But if you want one just for fun, then a F103 or 104 or any of the combinations will provide plenty of motivation.

Just been reading your article and where you talk about final drive ratio, you refer to FDR and Roll-out as essentially the same thing. Now I'm sure you're familiar with both terms and their differences, but you say that "FDR is the number of times the motor must turn in order for the wheels to turn once. Expressed as a ratio eg; 4.0:1 means the motor turns 4 times to rotate the wheels once." This is incorrect, as FDR is the ratio between the pinion gear and the differential SPUR gear, not the actual road wheels (which is what you explain roll-out to be, correctly...)
Just for any newbies reading your article, I would hate for them to get confused.

Thanks for reading the article and for the feedback. You certainly made me re-visit what I'd written - which is a good thing - to make sure I was explaining things correctly.
I visited several sites to make sure that what I was explaining was correct. Here's what I found:

Example: 85T (spur) ÷ 16T (pinion) = 5.3125 x 2.4 (gearbox) = 12.75 or 12.75:1(FDR)
What this means is that the motor makes 12.75 revolutions to every one revolution of the tire.

The gear ratio of your buggy or truck is simply the number of times the motor shaft must turn in order to make the rear wheels turn once.

I can see where the ambiguity crept in; some of those sources, although correct in principle, all seem to use slightly different terms to explain the same thing. I've never heard of "internal drive ratio" or "driver ratio" before, always first calculating the pinion/spur ratio then providing the tyres are unchanged then there is no need to work out an actual wheel revolution for every revolution of the motor (however this information was necessary for the banked turn calculations I did a while back...)

David Stevens from RC Formula1 has received permission from Guinness World Records® to attempt to set a new world record for the longest distance in an RC car on a single battery.
The current record of 23.726 km was set in 2009 in France and was achieved at a very slow speed over more than 24 hours.

I've been dragging my feet finishing the car. Last night I set out to complete for test drive today.
I freaking forgot about the 64 pitch pinion. All I have is 48 and 32 pitch. I wish there was a 24hr drive though hobby shop.

The Guinness World Records® record for the ‘Greatest distance by a Radio Controlled (RC) model car on one set of batteries’ was previously 23.726 km set in 2009 in France.

Last Sunday we tried to cram as many F1's into the same race as we could. 29 cars started the race and 27 finished so we're claiming a new unofficial "World Record" for the most F1 cars in a single race.

I’ve not been following RC stuff for a long time, but I recently found my old RC F1 car and I started to remember how fun it was. So I’ve decided to it back running. I hope someone will be able to help with some very newbie questions. I will just be ruining it in the street and not racing, so cost is important, I have a F201, and a F103.
First of all I need a new motor and ESC. I see that brushless motor are starting to become available for RC cars, and I would like to use a brushless motor. Can someone please tell me what to look for, or recommend a good, reasonably priced, combo.
Lipo batteries is another area that has come on, I see that 2S and 3S seem to be the normal, what should I be looking for?
Is there any other general tips for a guy who has been out of RC stuff for along time?

Hi Bob,
The kit you're looking at is a basic, entry level kit, which will be fine for bashing around your local parking lot. You will be able to add upgrades to this kit as you want to down the track, and I'm pretty sure it comes with foam tires, which are actually easier to handle. The rubber tyres come in various compounds and do require careful setup and a smooth driving style...
Any 1/10th scale brushless system will fit, however I would suggest sticking with the standard silver can motor until you have learnt to drive it as they are quite different from other RC cars.
