Hi All

I've read these threads numerous times and maybe I'm not getting it but is an 8kg turbine sufficient to get the T45 off a grass field ?

I'm deciding between the Jets Munt VT80 and Merlin 100X.

I've weighed my T45 and will everything minus fuel and turbine, the weight is ~ 6.5kg

I'm allowing 1.2 kg for turbine and 2kg for fuel and 0.5kg for miscellaneous (eg batteries) to end up with a target wet weight of 10 kg or under, hopefully 9.5kg

The M100X seems overkill but then I keep reading of long take offs and others also unsure of whether 8kg thrust is sufficient for grass strip

cheers

I decided on the VT80 and flew the T45 last week. It rotated off grass without any issues and was a much shorter takeoff run than expected.

It flew beautifully. CG 145mm and sightly nose heavy on the Great Planes CG Balancer.

Takeoff weight was 9.6kg that includes 1.8L of fuel. I used a Dubro tank tucked up close to the CG.

No tendency for wingtip stall at all. In fact my landings were power off before the final 2 turns with a blip on power halfway in the final straight, kept the nose up all the way.

Maiden flight I landed without flaps.

2nd flight I used half flaps (12.5mm) and no noticeable trim required. I haven't used full flaps yet (25mm)

I've now changed the tank out for a Dubro 2.4L tank. I found that i use 1.6L after a 6.5min flight and I would like a bit more.

Also changing out the Jet-Tronics retract valve for Xicoy V2 - never had much luck with Jet-Tronics gear....

I'm using the Xicoy V1 for the brakes and they are great !

Really happy with this plane.

Great news, still plugging away at mine!

Do you have the modified GJC wing tips or the stock wing and are you running one or two elevator servos?

Thanks
Steve

Congratulations. We also maiden the Hawk yesterday at Mississippi Afterburner 2013. It has an old P60 and flew very well. C.G at 140mm. We used the newly improved stabs. It's a really easy plane to fly even we had 4 flame out landings out of 5 flights when we have air bubble issues in the fuel lines. All landings were nice and easy with full flaps.

Hi Steve

I have the modified GJC wing and I am using 1 servo for the elevators.

The servo is a Futaba BLS155 and I am using the modified elevator parts from GJC

I also put a small piece of fibreglass cloth under the servo which is wrapped in metal tape.

not needed i found out because my pipe is very cool

It certainly is nice and easy. I was so fearful of the maiden because of what i read on this forum - wingtip stalls, elevator flutter, fast landings etc etc

It pays to kept things light too.

Hi Michael,

Congrats on the Maiden!! Glad all went well. How do you like the VT80? Sounds like a good combo for the plane. Post some pics up

Cheers

Hi Jeremy

Yes the VT80 is a good combo absolutely. For grass fields i believe the takeoff weight for a VT80 needs to be below 10.5kg if you want a short takeoff.

the VT80 has a very smooth startup and is light and compact.

cheers, Michael

Dry weight is now 8.4kg (19lbs) because I've included a 2nd tank to take total fuel capacity to 2.5L

A T-45 was my second turbine jet.
I was put one 24kg. hitec servo on the elevator and VT-80 as engine.
I was feel the fly whit a exces on ailerons, but after a fews minutes a take the control.
All the turns was ok. Never i feel that the plane stall. all was ok.
But, in the last turn, when i was ready for landing...i never knew what happened.

thats the video.

Where do you see an elevator failure? Looks like he slowed down too much in that turn? I actually thought he was going to stall in the second to last turn as well. Sorry for the loss.

Straight in dive with zero elevator input. You dont even see the usual desperate last moment pull up elevator input.

This models are a piece of junk and wasted money

I have the right to say that because we have pay this failure too : http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_10...m.htm#10857227

He comes across downwind low and slow, pulls up as he goes into base meaning he gets even slower, then stalls at low altitude. No elevator input due to low speed during descent.

The speed is enough to see an elevator input.
IMHO the pin got loose in the soft balsa in the elevator loosing the Centering: http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_10...m.htm#10857227

stay away its wasted money

i dont think so[]
the model has already burn most of the fuel so its less heavy and its away from stall in this speed after the last turn.
If the soft balsa in the elevator decided to delaminate at this point ,it explains the course change and crash

I wonder if the pilot can give some input regarding the state of the airframe after the crash, i.e the elevators?

The airplane simply got slow. Why cant we ever just say we screwed up? When it turned base it was barley flying!! And what happened to a real pattern? Based on the flight direction you should have enterned right hand traffic not fly behind you to the right. Sounds like you felt better at left turns than right. This airplane was moving way to slow to turn base and the nose was not down very much bad combination. The plane must have power and be in a nose down attitude on base and final. Sorry your plane was lost that sucks!!

Funny, between each of my posts above was a reply from DelGatoGrande saying he thought it was elevator failure and Hawk a no good plane. Now his posts are deleted....
