One question though......is that where you put it though when you felt it was tail heavy? (I have just read the whole thread and noted your earlier comments)

I have also noted that my kit that I received recently does not have the narrow fixed trailing edge section between the flaps and ailerons.....is this a change that has occurred with the kit or did you guys modify to fix that section when you built yours?

In the flight pic it appears this jet has that little trailing piece between the ail and flaps. I have owned several of these AW Migs and they all had that. I guess the factory made a change for some reason?

Hi Vin,

Thanks for that....I must confess I have confused this wing for one on another kit that I have....duh! I checked my Mig 21 and it does have fixed section as yours did. Did you go for an internal linkage on your rudder or external with servo in the fin?

I have noted that the ailerons only deflect down 10-12 mm but they have a lot of permissible up deflection. I am guessing this was done to prevent over-stressing the top live hinge on the ailerons....what did you do as far as aileron deflection go?

I have owned both with internal rudder and external rudder servos. The external is easier to install and maintain imo. The ailerons dont need much travel they are very responsive in the jet. I dont remember my exact travel amount but was maybe 1/2" or even less.

Hi Vin,

Thanks again for the info. That makes sense as the cut line on the aileron only allows for only around 12-13mm of travel. I am assuming that Airworld intended it to be so due to the small wingspan of the mig.

I just bought a used AW Mig-21 (only 2-3 flights), and the previous owner had installed a 1L tank in addition to the main tank. I plan to use a Behotec 180Gold, and try to determine flight time. To avoid to much shifting of the CG, I would like to remove the 1L tank...


BTW, AW recommends turbines from 12kg and up. 12kg of thrust seems marginal to me!?

I flew my migs on either a 120sx Titan or 160sx. The 120sx was a little weak on take off but once cleaned up flew fine.

Cool jet, Mig 21's are great looking fighters. But it sure moves around a lot in flight. Just a lot of random pitch and roll gyrations in both videos. It would be fun to see Ali fly it and see if this is pilot induced or "the nature of the beast". If it can be flown in a rock steady scale like fashion, Ali could do it.

A 2 axis gyro would be perfect in the Mig as it is very difficult to stop all of the weird gyrations during a flight, especially in some wind. Also i noticed in the vid the main gear doors are closed when the gear is down?? on the full size they remain open. The model benefits from the open doors during takeoff because the motor gets more air thru the wheel well openings.

I generally find bad flying airplanes to be more a problem of setup than the airplane itself. Most people have WAY too much throw on most surfaces, with poor mechanical advantage setting up slop in the control system.

In that video btw, it sounds like it's pretty windy, and if turbulent as well, could account for the wobbles.. It also could be that it's just out of trim and the pilot isn't fixing it.
