Slow poke build questions
Hey guys , I built the slowpoke sport 40 a few years back and really enjoy it alot, I have allways wanted to do the smaller slowpoke kitt and knowing that the kitts have been discontinued I feel that I got really lucky to have won the bid for one on ebay. So my question is have any of you guys added alirons to this kitt? It is kitted without them, allso have anybody ever built it with no dehedrail? Ive had a thought about building the wing to specs, and then build a 2nd one with alirons and no dehedrail. What do you guys think? I didnt do a build log on my last slowpoke build and thinking about doing one on this one.

RE: Slow poke build questions
Ibuilt the smaller one with ailerons. It was a lot of work.
First I moved the polyhedral in one bay to the landing gear block.
Then built the outer panels by cutting the ribs, and adding a trailing edge.
Ibuilt the ailerons with the cut off rib pieces, and sheeted them.
for the dihedral, Iadded just enough so it didn't look flat. It started on the gear rib.
Good Luck
ED
It was very responsive to the ailerons and was alot of fun
The server is not letting me upload pics.
I will try later

RE: Slow poke build questions
I built one as per the plan and increased the control throws. A friend built one with ailerons at the same time. Except for rolling which I couldn't really say was axial anyway mine was just as capable and a blast to fly. I flew it a lot with skis and it was perfect for that. If I built another one I would do the same again.

RE: Slow poke build questions
I added ailerons to my Slowpoke by shortening the center section by 1 rib on each side and basically building 2 constant chord wing panels using a center section rib as a pattern. The ailerons are barn door and are 11" in length. The plane flies great and I highly recommend you convert.

The guys that have posted here have done a very nice, well engineered modification to there wing. I would guess that they were also rewarded with better results than the plane I spoke of which simply had the ailerons added to a stock wing.

Those are great examples of what I want to see, I keep asking myself if I should even build the kitt design wing and just build like you guys have done.

RE: Slow poke build questions
Scott,
In my case, I built 2 Slowpokes, the first I built per the plans with 3 channels. It flew well and was a lot of fun. However, IMO the wing tips as designed were fragile and were easily damaged with a poor landing unless you add strength in that area. Still and all a good plane.
My second Slowpoke, I built the wing in a design similar to the wing on the .40 size Slowpoke. It did involve more work in that new ribs and new spars were needed for each wing panel. New wing tips were carved from a piece of balsa. The result IMO was well worth the effort. The plane will roll, fly inverted and takes off and lands very nicely. Go for it.
