RE: Eindecker EIII
Ok Where to begin? Wind was light, maybe 2 to 4 mph, coming in from 5 to10 degrees from cross from the left.....not enough to even consider.
Take off was straight forward and a little sooner than expected.....plenty of power available for lift off.....climbed substantially so I added some down trim.
Plane was crabbing to the left, hollering for some added right rudder which straightened her right up.......I should have held it much longer, even after the plane was airborne.
Level fight was established......then the hunt for the proper wings level trim settings.......added some aileron trim, maybe a little rudder trim.......never was satisfied with those settings.........I think the plane set up (flying wires & right thrust, maybe lateral balance) needs some more attention.....another factor may have been more crossing winds aloft than I felt on the ground.
Elevator seems effective without being too sensitive........rudder is very effective, I might consider reducing the throw from all I can get without hitting the elevators to a little bit less.
Ailerons are somewhat effective, some of which is the result overall design of the Eindecker, and some is because of a very large flat bottomed wing.......I have about 2&1/2 inches of up aileron and about 1+ inches of down travel.........I might play with those throws to see if it changes the roll rate any.
The airplane is definitely a rudder ship.......the fuselage wallows when just aileron and elevator is used for turns......lays on its side, sometimes nose high and sometimes nose low.
To properly fly this model the rudder must be mastered........in fact, it might be better to fly the rudder as the primary turn control rather than the ailerons......and just use aileron to bring the wings back to level as the turn is completed.
It is definitely an interesting model to fly.

lets see if I can find some flight shots
On the first flight early on the throttle linkage came loose.....it was at a couple of 3 clicks above idle.......I thought about climbing up and just tooling around, but then the engine slowed some and altitude was bleeding off.......the idle was still a little high for landing, but as you can see, the landing was without incident.
more later....

Beautiful plane Art. Very nice looking in the air. Looking forward to seeing you and Rhonda in Muncie.

Just a thought here, but with that longer cowl which I used (because of my engine choice) this could be morphed into an EIV very easily. The EIV had a twin row rotary which required a longer cowl among other mods.......

Congrats my turtle super hero!
I wish I could be with you at the Nats(with the other EIII)...but as you know that is the last weekend before ODP and my team has alot of last minute projects I have to be there for!
Hope you do well in the Nats and I will see you the next week.......

Hi Art,
Been following your build nearly daily. Congrats on the successful maiden. It looks really good, especially
seeing it break gravity They do fly better with a pilot in the cockpit though. I actually have a friend who will not
test fly without a pilot (superstitious I guess?)
Concerning the flight characteristics, my BUSA Eindecker likes rudder first then Aileron, yet in a turn
you are actually cross controlling.
Cindy and I are making tentative plans to attend ODP.
Calm Winds,
Mike

Hi Mike
I certainly hope you and Cindy can make it down to the ODP........it would be great seeing you guys again!
Thanks and yes, to make good turns both aileron and rudder turn in the direction of the turn and then cross control the ailerons to make it smooth........or sometimes just a rudder turn with cross control of the ailerons.......I don't have enough time on it yet to decide which is better or the conditions where one or the other is the better way.......
I'll figure it out in another couple dozen or so flights (I hope).
For the most part, I think I will fly it like a rudder ship and use aileron to keep the wings level.
(it sure did look naked without a pilot) (even an unfinished pilot is better than none at all)
Cheers,
Art

Thanks Steve - I was more anxious on this maiden flight than I have been on any of the past couple maidens that I have done - go figure?!
(my realism score would suffer without my anemic pilot)
Thanks Dale - haven't heard from you for a while - are you gonna fly up to the ODP in your N-17? I have been following your thread, but it has been quiet for a while........I admire your ability to jump in and learn how and then build a full scale airplane. It is looking very good so far!

Pictures, we need some pictures here........as you can see, once it broke ground it climbed rather sharply to altitude.

Congrats on the maiden flight Art, glad to see the photos. The very first third scale plane I ever saw was your old Eindecker (back then it was new!). Nice to see you with another Eindecker!

Good job with the video Steve. When Art called ''emergency landing'', i am watching and wondering why is he having an emergency? No throttle control would explain that. Glad she went to idle. By the way, nice field.

Hi Greg and thanks. I didn't realize how much I enjoyed flying that old Eindecker until after I sold it - then sellers remorse set in. Although this new Eindecker is only Fun Scale and has conventional control surfaces and my old Eindecker was built for competition scale and had wing warping and a full flying tail, they both fly in a similar fashion......they both have pretty accurate scale outlines and I think the overall layout of the original Fokker design sets the parameters (to a degree) of how the models fly.
They are both "rudder" ships, that's for sure! I think that the Larry Folk kit, with a few modifications, could be turned into a first class competition model. As it is, it has a scale outline and is a super stable flying model.......as you could see from the video it is rock solid on landing. It might take a while for a modeler to learn how to fly a "rudder" ship, it is a little different from a conventional model, but he would be rewarded with a great flying model that's a bit different from the ordinary.

Steve - thank you so much for driving down and shooting the video for the maiden flight of my version of the "Larry Folk" Eindecker kit.
You add so much to our WWI modeling community and don't get nearly enough credit for all that you do - and it was a nice surprise to see that Matt made the trip, too! He is another unsung "mover and shaker" of the WWI fraternity, especially in the Hoosier Dawn Patrol. Thanks go out to you both. You are very much appreciated!
