RE: Vailly Typhoon Build
suggest a hatch back there so you can remove the retract easily. Based on my expeerince with my Seafury I have had to pull it out a few times and it is a PINTA to get out and back in!

RE: Vailly Typhoon Build
yup, I had to cut a hatch into mine. Even with that it is a bloody pain to get into to remove the bolts and pull the unit out for service. Judice use of a magnetic tool is needed!

More progress... I have aquired a unrun and good conditon Quadra 100m and not sure if she requires "soft mounting". All and any advice is more than welcome,

RE: Vailly Typhoon Build
ive got a Q100B , AND may use it on my bates tempest , because the 3w 70 i was going to use is just too
long . you have to come out from the firewall , to clear the rear muffler on the Q100 . your engine is the newer
version , mine is the old split case type.

Quadra 100m and not sure if she requires "soft mounting".
The F3A boys have had many years of experience soft mounting due to noise reg's, airframe fragility etc.
Decades of experiments have show that the mount must function in the rotational axis and not, up and down, side to side.
If you must soft mount, a Hyde type mount are they way to go, period.
He also makes versions that don't need a nose ring to stabilize the prop shaft.
Having said all of that, I'd mount it solid.

Thanks fellows,.
I would much rather mount it solid, makes life a lot easier....just concerned as regards to vibration. I have not run the motor as of yet, so unsure our fierce they really are. Any current users please feel free to contribute..
Many thanks,
Frank.

Thanks for the link..I have the silencer on its way from them, the mount is to big for my set up unfortunatley.. looks like standoffs.

This is the type of thing.
He'll (Merle Hyde) will have one specially for your choosen engine.
If soft mounting, this is the only way to go mate.
BUT.. and it's a biggy... you'll have engine movement around the rotational axis which'll mean you'll have to have plenty of space inside the cowl ( or extra cut outs) and... unless you have your header/muffler system soft mounted so it'll follow the engine, you'll be hit with constant header breakage. And don't believe flexi headers will solve your problem, they'll break eventually.
Hard mounting sounds better eh.

Thanks for your trouble David. I am now convinced to "solid mount". Never really liked the idea of soft mounts to be honest, maybe being over conscincentious eh.

Frank

RE: Vailly Typhoon Build
my Vailly seafury has a Zenoah GT-80 fitted using 4 point soft mounts that bolt to a 1/4" steel plate. The engine is then hard bolted to the plate. Previously it had a G62 on same setup. I get none of these "movement" issues raised, never had a problem with twisting.
I can say that on a wood structure such as a Vailly design that hard mounted large single such as G62, DA-85, Q100 etc will shake and vibrate the hell out of the airframe if hard mounted. Even with soft mounts the G62 shock the hell out of it, especially around idle. For that reason I went to the GT-80 twin.

RE: Vailly Typhoon Build
hence why my engine is bolted to a large double thinkness of 1/4" plate. Plate though is soft mounted. Needed the weight up front anyway.
end of the day we do what works for us, in engineering there is always more then one solution to a problem. [8D]

As mentioned, we've had decades of soft mounting experiments and came to the conclusion that the mount must only be soft/flex in the rotational axis (makes a lot of sense when you think about it).
Any other type of soft mount that lets the engine jump up and down/side to side just creates even more problems, literally shaking the aircraft.
Nice model BTW, I've almost finished an illustration of one except with a bubble canopy...
Have fun.
