RE: Pheonix Extra 330S 60-90 Size
PKa, I just had my first good trimming day last weekend for my replacement Phoenix Extra. It was raining on and off and calm. I was not snapping out of loops, but my new build sure was "wonky" at full stick loops. These were the same throws that I had been using on my recently departed Phoenix Extra. I was used to a plane that was balanced and trimmed- elevators matched about perfectly. I got close with this new build, but the loops got remarkably better when I reduced throws a bit to make the elevators both match at full throw up and down. It was like a different plane. So when you get the lateral balance right, if it still isn't good enough, try lookng at the elevators very carefully at full throw, as well as center, and half throws. I have two servos back to back, but the elevators were off by less than 1/8" from each other at full elevator up and down. Adjusting the ATV did the trick for me. More precisely, I was adjusting the ele to gear channel mix that I use, with the second elevator servo on channel 5 (gear). I left the ATV alone, but either would do the trick.

Well September is Almost here ; that means the Vegas 112deg days are almost over
for the year, and Our flying season is nearly here. Vegas only has One month of blistering
cold 50-deg days, and 5 months of really Nice flying weather !!!! (( sorry ))
SO
So that means it's time to pull out the Extra 330 and start going over her with a fine
tooth comb. I bin looking at my baby all summer now, and will Really REALLY Enjoy
pulling it off the wall and flying her again !!!
How has every one's year bin so far ; hopefully we all kept our crashes to a minimum ??

A friend of mine maidened this baby for me last saturday. With a Saito 100, she hovers at half throttle (engine not yet broken in). I'll have the cowl cut and ready to be installed by next week, I just need to have the engine tweaked a little.

About how long does a tank of fuel last with your Saito 100 ?
How big is the tank ?

HI Billie,
Long time friend. One more year and I am coming there to fly so maybe we will meet up. My wife and Ihave been saving for a country wide trip based on places to fly, food places seen on diners, drive ins and dives and bible confrinces. My mother is in mesa az so from there we sill want a good date to come there. does your local club have good fun flys or anything in the winter months? (p.s. I think we could handle that freezing 50 degrees lol)

Yes lots of fun-fly's usually for fall & winter, as it's way too hot in summer. Look
forward to seeing you ! In January, when the rest of the northern states are under snow,
that is when we are Loving it here !!!
It's gonna rain here for the next few days, so i thought i'd attack my landing problem
by splitting my ailerons in 1/2, then adding two more servos.
I can then set up a program to kill the flaperon on the inside section when it goes down. Now
the inside is only a flap , but i can make the outside section go up a tad for extra stability, as it's
only an aileron now.
It works really well on a glider to get them out of the air , what do you think for only maybe
1.5 - 2 extra ounces ?
I am NOT taking my DLE - 20 off this plane (.) ; but it lands kinda bad right now.
It couldn't Possibly be the pilot. (Ha) !

Havent tried it but I had a FS91SII in mine. It would have similar power, it will be slightly underpowered. Good for sunday flying but no 3D

RE: Pheonix Extra 330S 60-90 Size
I have a GMS .76 on mine and I consider it adequate for normal flying but not 3D. I currently have two other planes that I like a lot better so I have spent a lot of time flying them. I think this winter I am going to pull the .76 and put it on my Senior Telemaster, and find a nice .90 or .91 and put it on this Extra and see if I like it better. I have had none of the landing problems others have had with this plane, however I have had some elevator flutter but think I have that solved. I hate having a plane that has little problems that you have to tinker with all the time to make them fly right. Right now I am flying a Sig Fazer that I built from a kit last winter and it is my go to plane. Flew perfect from the first flight and I have done nothing to it but add fuel and fly. That's the kind I like.

from scratch now-days ; but the result usually is like what you describe !!
An ARF or a Bind & fly, is what people prefer now ; but Ya don't get the same
quality workmanship from a $2 a day factory worker , as a guy who is Dreaming
of Flying his machine when he's finished with his build.
Lots of Heli guys still build from kits though ; not so with the airplane people, they
prefer to watch TV instead of actually making their stuff !!
My Pheonix Extra 330S ARF, looks Nothing like the stock version, all the defects have
bin re-worked and the plane has bin recovered .
Really wish Pheonix would made a KIT version of this Extra 330S , then i wouldn't
need to worry about if the factory worker building my plane was having a Bad Day and
forgot to put glue on my fire-wall, ( Like the one on My plane) !!! i was Not happy with That .

Ameyam asked me to show him how i made my horizontal tail fins removable.
I wraped the carbon with some wax-paper, then wrapped some Glass & Epoxy around
it.
Cut the new glass tubes as supports for the carbon that is glued into the tail-fins.
Cuts down on Hanger-Rash when transporting ...
Only added a little weight ; but it was Needed for the DLE-20 anyway !!

I Built , No "Re-built" the stab around the carbon tube.
I put the inserts on the one with holes by placing the glass tubes
on the carbon first. Use the glass tubes that go through the fuce
as spacers when modifying the new stabs.
You Could secure the stab(s) to the side of the fuce with a 90deg
angle aluminum, instead of the screw in the end of the carbon tube.
Probably be easier, but you would need Two of them ; one for each side.

RE: Pheonix Extra 330S 60-90 Size
By the same token, would you suggest to use the removable stab feature in my bigger models? Both my AW Extra 300 30cc & my 90-120 yak, as well as mt &9 Funtana have removable horizontal stab held onto the fuse by bolts, just like the main wing on the GP Reactor 46. But the general concensus on my field was to epoxy them in and not use the removabillity.
If I make them removable, I could use these servo side to allow to remove the linkage without losing trim

That's a heavy duty looking ball-link !! NICE !!!
I use the links off a 60 size helicopter ; same thing i guess but YOU don't
ball link remover tool for yours.
I make EVERY airplane i own that's Over 48 inch span, with a removable tail.
Unless the stock design is sub-standard, i can see NO reason to epoxy one
that Already is removable, in permanently ???
Sounds DUMB to me ; but i fly hang gliders so consider the source. HA !!
I Also use a duel-servo on ALL my horizontal tail feathers if it's over 52 inch span.
I've lost planes because of servo failure in the past. You Can fly without a rudder
or 1 aileron, but NOT an elevator .

RE: Pheonix Extra 330S 60-90 Size
Hi,
this forum has been dormant for some time. Even I moved on to other airframes and my Extra was falling apart.
Now with the monsoon on, I need a cheap aerobatic airplane & was wondering whether the Extra fits the bill. Wanted to know if anyone has flown both the old & new versions of this airplane & can tell me the difference in the flight characteristics. I was wondering if there is any point in going for a new kit with better fliers from goldwing & like available

RE: Pheonix Extra 330S 60-90 Size
Still flying mine box stock with a .76 GMS engine. Flew it 6 times July 6, 2013. At 7 lbs. it lands perfectly. No issues on landings. I think guys with landing issues with this plane have added lots of weight (heavier engine) to the nose. This plane will loop, roll, hammerhead, split-s, Cuban 8 invert with the best of em jn stock form. The only problem I have with these cheaper Arf's is every time I move it or transport it I have to be extremely careful with it to keep it from breaking or cracking in some way. It is not built out of 1st grade material.

This thread has been dead for some time, but contains a lot of good information about this airframe. I just bought one of these from Tower for $149 to replace a Great Planes Extra 300SP 55" that reached its expiration date. I'm planning on this electric setup
RImfire 0.80
CC Phoenix 75amp
Xoar 14x7 PJN (electric)
Tactic TSX40 servos
I'll appreciate any comments from anyone especially with experience with this setup.
I'll post notes on build progress.

I had one of these years ago and as I understand it there is an updated design now. Back then I used a Saito 125 with the stock mount and it reall flew pretty well best I remember and from my own flight report in this thread.
I quit flying glow years ago and have a few extra Zenoah 20's laying around. The Saito 125 engine and muffler was just shy of 25 ozs plus the weight of the heavy plastic mount.
The bare Zenoah is 29ozs plus about 2 oz for the muffler but I won't need the motor mount nor would I need to carry as much fuel. The ignition also weighs 2-3 ozs but with today's Life batteries with two leads the ignition battery and the flight battery can all be the same one.
So what I am trying to say is I have been thinking about getting another one for one of the extra Zenoah 20's I have not being used as a cheap knock around plane and I don't think going gas will be a significant weight gain over glow.
