Can I shorten the Saito header pipe?
I didn't some searching and didn't find much info on this. I am putting together a H9 Cub and have a Saito .72 for it. The muffler can't fit inside the cowl because the header pipe is too long. It's the straight pipe that is threaded its full length. Can I cut it down to bring the muffler closer to the engine, or will that cause a problem with the way the Saito runs?

No it will not affect the engine and how it runs. But usually the modellers go with a Pitts muffler to fit the engine. They make the Pitts muffler or in cowl mufflers to fit both two and four stroke engines.

I'd go that route if I needed to, but really I just need the exhaust tip to move in about 3/8 of an inch to fit everything into the cowl and to get the exhaust to the cutout I had made for the former engine that was in there. Thanks for the help guys.

OF has the right idea. I Bent the headpipe on my 125 saito this way. Find two small sockets or rod that fit the ID of pipe. Clamp one of them in a vise and place the pipe on it. Leave the locknuts on the pipe. Place the other socket attached to an extension in the other end of the pipe. Now use a propane torch and heat the center of the pipe and apply pressure 'till it starts to bend. Done. Good luck, red

RE: Can I shorten the Saito header pipe?
G'day I had a Saito 120 in a H9 Cub. I fitted a Turbo header without using the 90 degree adapter and it worked well and fitted totally inside the cowl (apart from the exit).
I also have a Saito 150 which I bought from a friend. He is a welder and he cut the pipe and shortened it. It is now in my Sig Four Star 120 and runs fine.
So you have two possible solutions. I think the Turbo Header would be the best way to go. No cutting, no welding. Just bolt it on.
Hope this helps.

RE: Can I shorten the Saito header pipe?
G'day
All my Saitos are on muffler pressure but we have been experimenting with no muffler pressure on some ASP four strokes. They work find without MP. My three Lasers also run without MP and my OS Gemini 160 also does not need it.
We started running the ASP four strokes without MP because the muck from the mufflers was fouling the fuel and with each successive run, the engines would start to run more and more raggedly until on about the third flight they would deadstick. The Saitos don't foul the fuel.
Cheers
