RE: 3W Bearcat Build - Oh Yeah!
Hi Erich/Guys,
Looking for a home for a MOKI 215 radial and picked up on this thread.
I am considering the 3W Rare Bear but need an all up weight under 20kg, to avoid having to register this under the UK Large Model Scheme.
With your experience is this achievable ?
Thanks
Steve D

Hi Steve,
it is possible of course. My first Bearcat (No. 204) had a weight of 19,5 kg wet.
When you use a retract from WABO for example and so on.
Best regards,
Erich

Great looking Bearcat Mark.
To the unininitiated - is this the 3W 100" Bearcat ?
I am unsure if the Rare Bear being smaller at 88", is worth considering.
Smaller wing, higher wing load etc.
Have you guys experience of both ?
Thanks
Steve

Ken,
In researching all I can on the recent aquisition of a 3W Bearcat, I have the exact same gear as you have shown in this post. If possible, can you provide me with any and all information associated with them? Who made them, your mounting process, any issues during installation, and flight experience with them and how they hold up.
Anything would be of great use. My buddy and I reviewed them and tried matching them upto the wing last night, and we kinda have a idea on mounting, but they seem to potrude out the bottom of the wing if mounted in the scale location as they should. These are some heavy duty gear, and would be neat to get them installed and working, but would like advice and information on how they go in and in the end how thwy worked out.
Thanks,
Shawn

Guys,
I don't have any information (instructions) and I'm looking for information on the Firewall setup on this plan. Offset, etc....? I have a Moki 250 and need to know what size firewall thickness to use and how far from the cowl it should be.. Hobby shops only have 1/4 and less in aircraft grade. 3/8ths in Craft grade. Any usable stuff at hardware stores?
I'm looking at threads again but thought I would ask as there are so few of these being built and even less threads of those builds.
Thanks,
Maddawg

Maddawg,
My comparf F4U has 5/16" thick FW for the moki 250. You can just epoxy two different thickness, together.
Also, rockler wood working stores sells high quality plywood in thicker and larger dimensions. Woodcraft is another wood working store.
http://www.rockler.com/product.cfm?p...6&site=ROCKLER
BalsaUSA also has multiple (5 ply) thicknesses:
I usually buy my wood from them.
They have 3/8" thick which will do.
If you need wider then 12", buy 1/4 and 1/8 and 'cross grain' epoxy the two together at 90 degrees so the break in each layer of ply is over a solid section of ply (or just go to rockler!).
http://shop.balsausa.com/category_s/68.htm
National balsa sells wider sheets (2'X4' and larger) but I've only seen it when they are at big air meets.
I haven't seen it listed on their web site (may be too expensive to ship).

Samparfit, thanks for the information. I should have thought of that myself about gluing two together. Dua! We have a Rocheler store here in Houston, I might stop by there and see what they have.
Thanks,

Guys,
Those who built this plane, did you put in any offset on the firewall? I have heard of it needing it and reports that it don't.
I'm ready to build the firewall box and have to figure this out as well as distance from then cowl.
Thanks,
Maddawg

RE: 3W Bearcat Build - Oh Yeah!
Thanks for the info on engine. I have pretty much built the whole engine firewall and mounted the components for throttle and choke. ECU is in place on front of firewall, though I wish I could mount it behind just to keep the heat off it, but don't want to compromise the firewall with a hole to feed the darn plug. I need to order the fuel pump, and new wheels. The Gennis wheels are to heavy in my opinion. I also have to get a better tail wheel. The one I have is foam and is breaking down, need to source a wheel for that. I'm getting down to the final details on plumbing her out. I want to maiden her prior to paint. Was hoping to have her ready for June 1st but I doubt I will make it as I only have 15 days left and still a bit to do.
Painting - I know large swath of opinions. I was thinking going Latex house paint. Question is, which brands, and do I go interior or exterior? What clear? This will be painted Dark Sea Blue based of the Model Masters colors. Ashame they don't make large bottles of this stuff. I could use the 2 part paints, but cost and complexity. Plus weight as this fuse was painted before.
Thanks,
Maddawg

Whatever you guys find - I'm interested. I've got my v1 version of the 3W Bearcat on the bench now... Not finding much out there - it's been a while since someone built - or at least posted here...

Hi Rosster6028... I just started a 3w Bearcat myself. It arrived a few weeks ago and just getting into it. I wish there were more builds posted, but what's here is great.

I'm still working on mine. RCS radial (Moki 250), Articulating retracts - Manufacture unknonwn. I basically need to paint and finish plumbing. Work on retract doors as well. I have decided to paint my own using paint masks. I have them scaled the right size. At least they look the right size. I'm hoping as soon as the wearther clears up and drys out I can primer it and redo all the panel lines and rivet details as they are to subtle and will get lost after painting. I will post some of my deminsions tomorrow for what I have.
