RE: Redesign/build FEJ
F-14 1/7 not that I need to say it but CAUTION ... MAC of pre honeycomb F-14 stab is 27.6% so glad my top speed was only 110-120mph as electric or I would have lost the plane.

RE: Redesign/build FEJ
So where to get new proper stabs...., or is everybody at FEJ on "a little break"
what about the people who forked out THOUSANDS and need PROPER stabs
they dont even answer emails anymore, unless its to buy...[:'(] disgusting
FEJ, James, Ken
Get some proper stabs built and send them out !

RE: Redesign/build FEJ
Well I bet someone will still certify kens and James f-14 to fly at my jets.
Jim can you post how far forward the shaft will need to move for it to meet ama requirement?

RE: Redesign/build FEJ
Never thought it would be so so so much work... I will not buy another FEJ ... Anyway moving the stab shafts fwd .5 inches from 27.6 MAC that they designed to 23% MAC where it should be.

RE: Redesign/build FEJ
That blows, I know someone who has one of these and he requested FEJ build him a new set with ply inside instead of the honeycomb and James response was not professional. I hope all your hard work pays off.

RE: Redesign/build FEJ
Still unpacking and resting from a great JOK and the successful failure that it was. Wanted to get this out right away though. My single engine skills are all dialed in and one thing that any F-14 should look at is the wing hatch cover. It's a huge area and I had one of the aft pins pop out of its hole on one flight with an engine failure.
Worst case is at high speed and have a dual flameout. The engines are sucking in a lot of air from the fuselage and with a flameout that suction stops and a big buildup of pressure happens under the wing hatch because of the high speed and intakes brining in a lot of air. Full bypass systems or added hatch latches or bolts are required I think.

I will be doing the hatch mod for sure, I had thought about this when I first got the model but after seeing the hatch push the latch out on flame out I would say its a highly recommended small easy mod. I was going to ask if you think adding another latch in the middle forward and back would be enough or should the latch be in the middle of the cover?

RE: Redesign/build FEJ
I would say at lest two .. Depends on the strength of the install.. Mine are hydrosol onto the bottom skin and one let go after only 7 flights. I think 2 bolts would work good or 4 latches if they are only glued on.

RE: Redesign/build FEJ
Would it help to add a couple front to back ply stiffeners? It seems to me the hatch has to bow or flex a bit in order to escape the latches. Get rid of the flex and the latches should hold better.

1/2 inch will not show much on the curve of the stabs

Moving the shaft 1/2" forward is not the proper fix, you need to also move the pivot bearings and bulkheads a 1/2" forward to maintain the lines of the aircraft. This is why it is not an easy fix and should be done by the factory.

Stab control
Forces on the linkage between the servo and stab arm were very high with this setup so I changed to a longer arm and small beam of aluminum. This setup has worked very well and had several good flights with perfect operation of the stabs.

Landing gear weakness
50 + flights and the low quality aluminum FEJ uses = landing gear are loose and can not be repaired anymore. Switched the nose to Robart #158 and will switch the mains when I have time. Nose replacement was easy the mains will require some redesign to fit.
