AVTI Summer Heat Classic Pattern - Lancaster, Ca - July 13th
Just wanted to remind everyone about the upcoming AVTI Summer Heat Classic Pattern contest being held on July 13th in Lancaster, CA. All the CPA classes will be offered and if enough are interested we will do the B pattern like it was run in Oakdale a few weeks ago.
Please let me know as soon as possible if you are coming and what class you will be flying. I want to get going as soon as possible.
As in the past, if the weather forecast is too bad for Saturday, I will postpone the meet to Sunday. So keep an eye on the internet forums for any announcements. The field will be available at any time for practice and of course you can stay and fly as much as you like.
Entry fee will be $20 which will include a barbecue lunch of burgers and dogs.
For more info on the field you can check our club website at www.avti.org.
Thanks! Hope to see you there!

Tony,
I'm in. The Vertigo is all refreshed after it's little misunderstanding at Oakdale.
45K Masters for me.

I'm not getting a whole lot of interest so far. We're still having the meet, but it looks like it's going to be mostly club members involved. Still not bad, as there is a lot of interest in the club in Pre-Novice and Novice.
To keep it simple, we're going to stick with the CPA classes only. If you're flying Masters, please get me your patterns by Friday so Mike and Jean can get them input. Everyone else will fly the CPA patterns. Also, any AMA legal airplane is eligible to enter Pre-Novice and Novice. You don't need a Classic model to fly!
Right now the forecast looks good! I hope to get things going by 8:30, so get her early! Also, stay tuned to these forums if the weather forecast gets bad. We may have to postpone to Sunday.

The forecast looks reasonable for tomorrow so I hope to see everyone there bright and early. I plan on getting the rounds started at 8:30, so please check in as soon as you get there.
Unfortunately, at the last minute the volunteer for the grill can't make it. If I can't find someone else we won't be able to supply lunch. So please be prepared for the day. I'm going to have a cooler with a lot of water, but you might want to bring your own drinks.
Let's have fun!

RE: AVTI Summer Heat Classic Pattern - Lancaster, Ca - July 13th
Well, Saturday turned out to be a great day and we had a great contest! When I scheduled this contest back at the beginning of the year I knew it wasn't going to be a large event. I figured the summer temps and the proximity to the Nats would keep some away. But I also knew that there was great interest in our club in the Pre-Novice and Novice classes. These classes are absolutely perfect for getting new blood, both in Classic Pattern and regular AMA. And we got a very good turnout in these classes with quite a few flying in their first ever competition aerobatic contest. This has happened before with our previous Classic meet and it happened again. I really hope some other CD's will take note and start promoting the Pre-Novice and Novice classes and get their club members out and flying!
So here are the results,
Pre-Novice
1st. Jack Bugaren (1st contest) 155.250
2nd. Jean Greear 149.250
3rd. Steven Schoolcraft 141.750
4th. James Whitacre 141.250
Novice
1st. Jamie Schoolcraft 196.250
2nd. Don Fox 186.000
3rd. Scott Holms (1st contest) 177.000
4th. Chris Mahoney (1st contest) 175.000
5th. Mike Whitacre 174.000
Masters
1st. Tony Frackowiak 854.000
2nd. Robert Fish 778.000
Robert unfortunately lost his great Vertigo II when he lost control shortly after take-off on a practice flight. He flew my P-7 and was really starting to hook up with it the more he flew it. Sorry Robert! I know you'll build one even better then the last!
The heat was starting to build and the big dust devils were on the rise so a vote was made and we decided to stop at three rounds.
A big thank you to Mike and Jean Greear for the scoring. They had to fight some equipment issues but got things going quickly. Another big thank you for stepping in and preparing lunch to Preston Knepper. He got rave reviews for the food! And thanks to Jamie Schoolcraft for the use of his RV for the scoring. And thanks to the Antelope Valley Tailwinds club for the use of our field. Our club will host 5 pattern contests this year and has been a big part of all the pattern contests in this district this year, sometimes being over 25% of the entrants! And many are doing very well in the classes they are competing in. I'm just happy to be around such a great group of people!
Hope to see everyone at our club's AMA/F3A contest on September 28th and 29th. The next Classic contest here will be on November 9th.

And here's the group shot, taken a little late in the day after Chris Mahoney had to leave.
Please note the variety of aircraft used. In my humble opinion, at least in the entry classes, we need to be very liberal about what model is flown and concentrate more on the one maneuver per pass patterns. I truly believe that Classic Pattern can be the best gateway series to getting more people in to competition aerobatics.

Here's a pic of myself with Chuck and his friend. Chuck is the person who arranged the Citation kit for me. He is extremely enthusiastic about Classic pattern and I think some very good things could result. Time will tell. BTW, my T-shirt say, "I'm not getting older, I'm just becoming a Classic!"

Well, with the exception of the destruction of my favorite airplane, I had a great time. It was very good to see the participation in Pre-Novice and Novice class. There were some close scores. But the most important thing is that we had three pilots that stepped up and tried classic pattern for the first time. And from their reactions, I would be willing to bet that they will be back for more.
Special thanks to Tony F, who after the loss of my aircraft not only let me fly his airplane in the contest but also called for me and coached me through and unfamiliar set-up. Keep in mind that I was his direct competitor.
That is a show of true sportsmanship and a class act.
Enjoy the pics and CPA members there will be an article in an upcoming newsletter.
