Roger, getting ready to paint my Top Flite giant scale Corsair and I need a suggestion on the engine. I would like to go radial but would consider a single or twin. I have a gas BME 60 twin, gas Brison 4.2, Quadra 70 Arrow, DA 50 and a Satio 300T fuel already in my stach. What say you? Tom and anyone else feel free to chime in. George

You did not ask me, but as I subscribe to this thread, I would like to chime in...
You own some some nice single-cylinder powerplants and all of them would do a wonderful job of hauling your bent winged bird.
But, as someone who has owned and flown dozen of single and multiple cylinder engines, my personal advice is that IF you have a suitable multi-cylinder engine (which you do), do not even consider going with a single.
The difference in vibration and stress on the airframe is like night and day.
Further, most warbirds benefit from some extra weight on the nose.

IF you go with multiple cylinders, you and your airplane will be many times healthier and happier

Hey Gesmale, I have a Black Horse Corsair powered by a UMS Evolution 777 seven cylinder glow fuel radial engine. I am very happy with the plane and engine combination. I can't speak to the TF Corsair but my guess is that it is similar in size to the BH and ESM Corsairs. The main thing with the 777 is making sure the cowl will fit. I am sure that several of the engines you listed would work well with the TF Corsair but as you know, you just can't beat the sound and sight of a radial engine. Maybe someone out there who is more familiar with the TF version of the Corsair can be of more assistance. Good luck with your project, I'm sure which ever way you choose to power the Corsair will be great.

Hi all, I have made inquiries to Maydotec and they answered promptly. I liked the 5-100 (5cyl. 100cc) gas engine. 6Hp and 7.7 pounds. US right now is around $2750.00. I would like and have searched for references. None found yet. The 5-100 sounds cool in the air. -Tom

Couldn't resist any longer,purchased the 7-35 EVO radial from Advantage Hobby for my 72'' Waco ARFand ordered the exhaust ring from Keleo Creations, it was that 10% discount and our falling Australian dollar that made up my mind!! As I have used theMc daniels onboard glow system before I will probably use this system again,although I seem to recall Maxam saying the engine ran well without it? Cheers Mark.

Mark, Recently I was helping someone with their new evo 7-35. The latest engines come with a much better carb, new plugs and harness and had great compression. The newest version ran so much better I got a new one like you did from Advantage Hobby. After some run in I am getting 6000 rpm with an 18x10 prop. I idled down the engine to 1200 rpm and walked away. After about 20 minutes I came back and all 7 cylinders were still firing and it throttled up right away! The new carb can move the fuel so it can be operated to full throttle. I am very pleased with this updated engine. -Tom

Lars, The plugs and the harness came with the engine. They are called evolution plugs. I hope you get yours up and running soon.

Guys, I have a question. I'm planning to build Mister Mulligan from Wendell Holsteter plans. It's a 98 inch wingspan, so not exactly a small plane. Now, I have a Moki 150 that I would loved to fit into this beast.
Do you think this combo would go well or would it be too much engine for the airframe? Opinions appreciated.

Hey fredo, long time no hear! I thought that Moki of yours was going in some other plane...

Anyhow, have a look at this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TusB_Hr_p4Q It's 118" DJ6 with a ZDZ-160 twin (3.4kg).

Now, I know there is no such thing as having too much power :-) but the Moki at 4.3kg might just be too heavy(?) for the 98 incher. It would certainly sound better than a chainsaw motor... I don't suppose you could scale it up a bit before you build it?

Yeah...I'm still kicking around. Yes, I do have a Moki in Bucker Jungmeister and I love it but there's something that attracts me to golden era. I'm thinking of selling my Bucker airframe only and use my Moki on something like DGA-6..
I have no problem enlarging it a bit but my biggest thing is to keep it light. Something like 13kg or even less if possible.

I have a Saito 325R5 that I need a plane for, any suggestions? I looked at ESM WWII, BUSA WWI and some Golden Era planes but I can't seam to find a good fit. ARF's, kits or build from plans suggestions are welcome.

Same engine, same dilemma, I'm looking at the 85" ESM F4U, thrust of the 325 is in the region of 4HP, so weight up to 30lb should be fine...

I was also looking at the F4U.
Someone has the ESM LA7 with the 325R5 but the plane seems a bit small for this engine.
Wendell Hostetler plans has some planes that would work if you don’t mind spending 3 years building one.
Hobby Lobby has or had a Gee Bee Sportster ARF with an 84 inch wing that might work but it’s out of stock.

Just search YouTube for Saito 5 cyl radial. You can also search fo ASP or Magnum FS 400 Radial videos. Both engines are near enough the same size.

Here's a pic of the Saito 325 installation on Martin's Zero. This is the early single plug per cylinder version.

Looks like the engine fits good in the CMPro Zero. I was thinking an 80 inch plane would be too small for this engine, guess not. ESM also has a few 80 inch planes.

If I may jump in here...........just a point of information. My ASP 4.00 engine, having been installed on two different Concept Fleet aircraft, has 100 flights on it. At an average of twelve minutes per flight that equates to twenty hours of run time, excluding break-in. I had occasion to open up the rear of the engine when I had it removed from the aircraft to do some other maintenance. I figured I may as well see what may be floating around inside at this opportunity. Other than two very small slivers of aluminum (1/64") inside the crankcase, everything was in place. There is some discoloration on the crankshaft counterweight, but no outright rust. I cleaned the guts with a solvent, air dried the engine and bathed the internals with Marvel Mystery Oil before closing it up.

I have a Saito 325 in a 50 cc Yak 54 with an all up weight of 14.5 pounds. The prop is a XOAR 20x10 and the engine can turn it at 7000 RPM. The real power is 3 hp. It is a good engine and powers the plane well but will not hover, not that that was my intent. It runs vastly better with the OS carb that is used on the FF320 or Gemini 160. Machining is required though. -Tom

I have the same sized Mr. Mulligan, but mine was built from an Ikon N W'st kit. Originally intended to power it with a Magnum 5 cylinder radial, but bench testing proved that performance would be less than stellar, so I decided against that radial.

I flew it first with a DA100 twin. This worked great, but was certainly MORE power than the airplane needs to fly fast and scale. I am now installing an Evolution 9-99. Just finishing up some surface detailing before I have to clear coat the entire airframe to protect it from all the glow goooo that will be spewed forth[]

At 7.7 pounds, the Evo 9-99 is really approaching the upper end weight limit for the nose of this plane, so I would think the Moki 150 would indeed be a bit too much. As far as power, you can always throttle back, but why install so much power up front if you cannot use it? I am anticipating performance with the Evo 9-99 to be spot on perfect !! (now if only UMS would offer this engine as a GASSER)

You could certainly build the Hostetler around the Moki 150 such that it balances and stays together, but I think the finished product would be at least 30 pounds and flying it would be more challenging than it needs to be. You could also scale up the plans, but that sounds like an incredible amount of work... If it were me, I would find a more suitable project for the Moki 150 and build the Mulligan in hopes that by the time yours is ready for an engine, the Evo 9 will be offered as a gas burner
