RE: BUSA 1/4 Scale Fokker Dr 1
You are gonna love your Fokker! I had one 10 years ago or so. I bought these Arizona arfs ~7 years which were so terrible I shelved them. I have since decided to knock out some of these old projects. I totally reworked these things with cable runs... even to the ailerons, made new wheels with bungeed axles... you name it! These were covered in SIG Koverall and Stix-It, sealed with nitrate, painted a butyrate cream base color then the streaking applied with a brush. I used blue vinyl tape for masking. I just need to finish a few details like cockpit coaming, pilot, struts, step, lift handles and some weight tables. The Solartex should give great results with less fuss.

Those tripes look very nice. Not a lot of good things said about Arizona modelers. I have always avoided them.
That was a good idea painting the fabric with a beige color of dope before the streaking. I am trying to figure out exactly the color of olive to use. I will be painting mine with latex, and going to have my paint mixed at the Depot.
What color of olive did you guys settle on to do the primary streaking?

I was just at Lowes looking at color samples. Almost had some olive mixed up to try.

I got all of my stitching and rib tapes done today. Took about 6-7 hours! Now I can focus on paint, detail, markings, and final assembly. Getting real close now.
May start painting Lothar tonight.
Also, I got my nomenclature and paint stencils from Get Stencils. They already have the font and sizes needed for this size Fokker. I am using dry rub for all except the large model numbers on the side of the fuse. I am going to make all of my own frisket for the iron crosses. Low tack shelf paper, and the airbrush will suffice here.

The wife and I will be on vacation the next two weeks. I had hoped to finish the top wing before leaving, but you can see that did not happen. I had to stop at this point because I don't have enough 3/32 x 3 balsa sheet to do the top leading edge sheeting. I think VG commented on the wood in the kit. The quality of the wood is fine, but there is a lot of it, and a lot sticks and sheets cut to different lengths. I wish I had the room to sort the wood and be better organized about it. I'm sure that I used the wrong length somewhere and shorted myself. Well, when I get back a trip to the LHS will solve the problem.

I made the same mistake, even having all of my parts marked!
I am doing the final painting now. Next up those dang Iron crosses. Hopefully that will go smooth and quick. If all goes well, I will have a pic of it by end of weekend, fully assembled. Hoping to get a maiden flight next week sometime. We have a fun fly coming up at my club, and want to have it ready for that.

Some updates. Cockpit combing, nomenclature application, Iron crosses painting. Getting really close now. Still some radio install and the fuel tank/plumbing. My club is having a fun fly next weekend, so I am trying to get her flying for that. I really pushed this project. I started in mid March. This is about as quickly as I could get a model like this flying. While it did go quickly, I have been happy with the quality still. You can go a little quicker when you have built one before.
RCU having pic probs. Will get them up when I can.

Vertical.... you mentioned something about a one pice interplane strut.. what is meant by that..did the kit supply something else or other method?
This kit is next on my list.... my holy grail if you will...i've waited many many years and my skills, etc are up to the task now... I plan pull pull on the tail and bungee'd gear. Like your tail spring too.

I have. Lots of time, and in many of the books I had doing resaerch. I think it was call the "squadron boelcke" modifacation. Because that is the first group of DRIs to use the brace. But I may be mistaken about the name of the thing. But it was on many planes by the end of the war.

On this model, I made the interplane struts individual items between the wings. I made my own attachment points which are more scale and much stronger.

I stand corrected on the cross brace,it must have been added after production.I have a great book on the DR1,and they never mention the crossbrace. The book has blown up plans and goes in great detail on the construction, nothing on the cross brace. There are dozens of WW1 pics..and if I look real close a couple do have the cross brace. My guess is if a DR1 survived for any length of time the sub-wing started to come loose-jeffo

A great example is the wings pallete website. Good for ideas, but cannot be taken too seriously.

Well, I got the maiden flights in today. 3 actually! I had some engine problems to overcome, but I seem to have it all in order now. I was a little worried about overheating, but the fear was unfounded, thankfully.
I still have some details to add, but she is essentially finished now. Very fun project. Love these BUSA kits.

Thanks Cando.
I read a lot about WW1 and considering the insane amount of carnage, and the brutality of the time, I try to express the impression in my WW1 builds. Such a fascinating area of aviation, and the planes are just so much fun to fly! I am looking forward to flying it in the upcoming Warbird events we have in my area.
Oh, and I have about + 5 degrees of Stab incidence. I stilll had some downtrim, but only a couple of clicks. Keep this in mind for any new builds.

RE: BUSA 1/4 Scale Fokker Dr 1
Well, I've been gone for two weeks. I get home. Get a little work done on the Dr 1 and RCU is not allowing me to post anything. Better late than never. First a few comments:
1. VG's plane looks awesome. If mine looks half that good, I'll marry it.
2. I'm going to be using a DLE 30 for power. That will require some firewall modification, but that's been covered in WacoNut's excellent build thread. http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_10..._1/key_/tm.htm
3. I've decided to go with the Lothar von Richtofen color scheme. I will be painting the balkenkruez instead of maltese crosses. I've painted the maltese crosses before and they were no fun.
Oh, my progress on the top wing. I've almost gotten the ailerons finished but my photo is a couple of days old.

I guess the new look of the RC Universe site is the reason I've been unable to post the last few days. I hope the new site works well for everyone, we will see. Ok, the top wing is finished, as are the ailerons. Not sure why the ailerons took so much time, but they did. For some reason, I love the look of the top wing and it's the ailerons that give it character. The fuselage side trusses are complete and I was very happy with the way they came out. Practically no sanding was required to make perfect matches out of them. I'm attaching the lite-ply doublers now. As I mentioned earlier, I'm using a DLE 30 for power. I've posted a couple of pics of the engine and firewall location. As WacoNut pointed out, the firewall has to be reworked to accommodate this engine. Not sure which way I'll go. I'll review WacoNut's technique before I decide.
