Jim Weigle's F-18 (2nd f-18 not the pink panther) had two AMT 450's and a custom made aluminum bulkhead, w/ Functional wing tanks, held 2.5 gal of fuel total and weighed 73 pounds at take-off. Tommy flew it and said it flew at 1/2 power like his did with two ram 100's at full power.
It landed awesome, even ballooned a lil' when ground effect kicked in just before touchdown, i have the video somewhere in VHS format.

Wow,
Well, it's all relative, I guess. I wouldn't want to land a 70-pound plane if I could land the same plane at 35 pounds, but then the guys you're talking about are far more talented...

Thats definatly encouraging. I do want to make the 55 pound limit though.

Hi,
No reason you couldn't do that while carrying two gallons of fuel.

So, I had a request to document my addition of the scale hinges and hinge gap covers. I am in the raw stages of the install, but I'll show what I have now even though it looks crappy at this point. The only faults with this system I have found to date is that while using the CA hinges allows almost flush mounting, they are a little stiff. It doesn't seem to be a problem though. There isn't much deflection down for the aileron, but the flap has a good amount of downward deflection. I think I will slot the middle of the hinges on the hinge line to help loosen them up. The other thing is that if you wanted more deflection you should make the brass sleve on the hinge gap cover further toward the trailing edge of the hinge gap cover. This would cause the wire to tug down harder. You can see on the control surfaces that I had to notch them to fit the brass tube on the HGC with the surfaced in the up position. I Cut the wing trailing edge down to the correct depth for the hinges to be located to cause the to of the HGC and the wing to be almost flush, then capped it with balsa and sanded flush with top of the wing. I made the HGC out of G9 and heated and bent the part closest to the fuse up. There are also some pics of my hinge hardpoints for reference. The brass tubes will be glassed and sanded smooth. There is also a brass tube inside the aileron that the piano wire is glued in, The wing also has a brass rod to act as a guide for the slack to move in and out of.

And of course the additions to the legs.

Hi,
No, it's not that! It's that I thought maybe there was another option out there. I love Y/A wheels and brakes, but the tires not so much. I don't buy Glennis stuff so...

I think Thomas is in a holding patern on his tires. I know its been said before, but the BVM stuff is supposed to be a nice fit. Are the yellow's still foam?

Sorry, you meant tire only. Why not use the BVM wheels and tires to simplify. Maybe you would get lucky and wheel diameter would be the same on the F4 setup.

One of the guys in Australia has adapted some air power wheels and brakes. You might also need to get a conversion bearing as I suspect the yellow struts will have a 1/4" axle.
