Hi David,

Thanks for the link. The kit came with the manual and I've looked through that section. My concern is that the two linkages are slightly different and I'm not sure if that's how it's supposed to be or if the previous owner had tried to make some adjustments already. I'll get my servo mount made and installed and see what happens.

I think I'm all set with the retracts. I have them adjusted and the servo mounted and they seem to operate as required from lock to lock.

I had a nice pilot bust that I wanted to use but he was too tall to fit under the canopy from the included floor so I left a shelf to mount the included seat back and then cut out the floor and dropped it down about an inch. This allowd me to mount a full size control panel as well based on a picture I found on the web. It was a lot of extra work, but I think it looks good and I didn't want to cut up the pilot bust. The canopy is cut and mounted as well, although one of the gray rear window backgrounds was located way out of position. Luckily it wasn't stuck on very well and I was able to reposition it.

I need to mount the fuel tank and lines as well as the remote glow connector. The battery and receiver also need to be mounted and it will be ready.

Thanks for the help and pictures.

I used one of these guys that I purchased from Nitromodels he was cheap but needed a paint job desperately I am not sure if it was this one or my H-9 P-51 that I had to cut down the pilot bust to get it to fit, what I did do was mount a voltwatch meter in the cockpit area so I could check how my battery was doing

Here is my pilot and instrument panel.

I'm thinking of spraying the covering with a fuelproof dull coat or matte finish to take the gloss off of it. I saw an E-Flite P-51B done this way and it really looked sharp (rather than shiney). Has anyone else tried that on this covering?

I've seen a few models with guns added. The full size seems to have several variations and quantaties of guns depending on the series and when and where is saw service. One picture I've found with the AGV paint scheme had two long barrels on each wing. Most of the other models seems to have three short barrels per wing. Any thoughts on adding them?

Although I was pleased to pick up this kit and engine for such a great price, I'm a little dissappointed in the fit and finish that was done on it. There are a lot of glue drips and epoxy fingerprints all over the place. He also mounted the aileron pushrod clips further down on the servo arm and had to enlarge the slots in the servo hatches by quite a bit.

The fuel tank was missing from the auction package so I ordered one from Horizon using the manual part number. It doesn't quite fit in the opening and it doesn't line up with the hole the firewall even if it's turned upside down. I'll have to carve out a new hole to pass the fuel lines through.

Anyway, it will be interesting to try out this type of aircraft and see how it flies.

I didn't know if anyone had found this before but this seems to be the full scale that the H-9 P-40 is based on BUNO 474850.

After struggling for most of the afternoon I finally got the Saito 100 running. It was way too rich at the factory settings for both the idle and high speed needles and took many turns in on both to lean it enough to get it to run. The hobby shop suggests that it might be the carburator as Saito had an issue with some older model 100's and replaced the carbs on them.

I was able to get it running well enough for a successful maiden and several more flights. The plane handles great in the air and tracks nice and smooth. It does want to nose over in the grass but will stay upright as long as I don't taxi it. Should be a lot of fun. The CG is right at 3" with the gear retracted and may see if I can move it back a little to help ground handling. I mounted a 2700 mAh Ni-MH four cell receiver pack underneath the fuel tank and with the large aluminum backplate and spinner I didn't need any other nose weight.

The stock mechanical retracts are working fine. If I could get them a little more forward in the lowered position it might help the nosing over issue as well.

The Saito 100 is a lot more engine than this airframe needs as it takes off before I get to 3/4 throttle and cruises easily at half throttle. I may see if I can swap it out for a Saito 91 in my Katana and give that one more power to play with.

I didn't have my camera so no "proof" but there were another club members there so I have witnesses.

I have started my first of three engine transplants. The Saito 100 has been sent into Horizon to check the carbyrator and see if they find the same settings are required. While it's off the P-40 airframe a long shaft Saito 91 has been removed from my BUSA Eindecker and successfully mounted to the P-40. I had just enough adjustment in the engine mount that allowed the slightly narrower 91 crankcase to fit. I wanted the longer prop shaft so that I could get enough thread for the backplate and large spinner. The transplant is almost complete and only needs a little more adjustment and a new prop hub spinner adaptor kit. Next the short shaft Saito 91 currently on my Katana 50 will be moved to the Eindecker as it doesn't have a backplate but just a washer, jam nut and brass drive hub nut. Lastly, when the Saito 100 gets back I'll make modifications to the Katana engine mount and firewall (I've bought a set similar to the one included with the P-40 as well a large two piece unit). The 100 has a long shaft as well and will accomodate the smaller backplate and spinner for the Katana. The 100 runs a lot smotther than the 91 and i hope will take some of teh vibration out especially at low rpms.

Hi David,

It looks like you have reccessed the servos or made covers for the tail servos...very nice. How did you do that?

Hi there Jaybird, Here are a couple of tips for your P40 first replace the gas tank with a dubro or sullivan tank the stock one will crack and leak all over the inside of your plane. The retracts are way to wimpy for anything but hard surface runways, I fly off a pretty darn smooth grass runway and every landing required new adjustments to the limit screws after that first session I switched over to Centuary Jet air retracts quite beefy and handle the grass just fine. I've been flying mine since 2005 when they came out and it has been just great no bad habits its powered with a OS91 Surpass 1 Master Airscrew 14x7 3 blade with a Kaleo scale working exhaust about to start my dream build of a Ziroli P40 94" 1/5 scale. Hey good luck with the maiden hold up elevator while taxing and begining take off roll and relax elevator as you build speed. Yogi

Hi Yogi,

Thanks for the information. The tank is Hangar 9 unit that I ordered as this one was missing it. I'll be sure to keep and eye on it for any leaks.

I have already had my maiden flight and four more since. It does want to nose over in the tall grass for sure. Once in the air it's a very easy plane to fly and looks great. I did dial back the elevator low rates to keep full up from causing a severse snap roll and left the hight rates for taxi.

It will be interested to see if there is much difference in performance between the 100 and 91 since I was using only half throttle most of time before.

I hope to get some pictures and video in the next few weeks or so. I do have a fair number of model and full scale airplane videos up on YouTube.

Stay cool!

Yes Jaybird,

I decided to mount the servos inside the middle of the fuselage and then built my own custom pushrods exiting out of the fuselage in the back. I was concerned about the weight back there and did not like the servos hanging on the back end. Ijust felt it took away from the Scale apperance...I think it turned out real well.....
I have since just purchased 2 new Hitec digital servos to replace the standard servos in the rudder and elevator section to get a quicker response. I think that will help...I have also replaced the O.S. 91 FX engine with a new O.S. 75AX for better performance. Ihave had all kinds of trouble with the 91FX and decided to give up on that. I tried new carburetors, different props, different fuels, and the darned thing just kept overheating, even with the new remote needle valve and such....It is a long story, but 2 years ago I lost my P-40 in the beans because of the 91 overheating and quitting in the worst places. It was missing for 3 months and when Ifinally found it the mice had eaten everything from the inside out...I have since rebuilt it and let me tell you I had a time trying to find replacment parts for this thing.....She is ready to go again......I will add some more photos of the P-40

I'm listing one of these models for sale in the ads. New, still in the hanger 9 box it was shipped in. Also includes extra electric motor mount box, fixed landing gear set, and servo mounts.

The first engine trnasplant is complete and two successful test flights were made at the end of the day today. The Saito 91 weighs a little less than the 100 did and brought the CG back to about 3-1/2" which it seems to like. Pleanty of power and ltlle better ground handling. I also drilled holes in the gear covers to allow quick access to the gear adjustment set screws. Very nice evening and it was finally cool out! Unfortunately there wasn't anyone there to take in-flight pictures or video. Maybe next time.

Now to get to some fly-ins with it.

I've lost my ability to edit the last post that I've made. Is that a setting somewhere in RCUniverse?

The word in the post above should be transplant, but I can't fix it!

p.s. I see it's back now with this post....interesting.

Flew for the camera at the KVMA family Picnic on Sunday. It was fogged in solid early in the morning but lifted as the day went on. It was the first view for a lot of the club members so they were excited to see it fly. When it came time to fire it up the engine didn't like the hot humid air and wouldn't run. Of course there was a dozen guys standing around waiting for some action and nothing was happening. I didn't have a hole in the cowl to access the idle screw so I had to take the spinner and prop and cowl off to get at it. Once i leaned the idle screw another 1/4 turn and put the prop and spinner back on it fired right up. It still didn't like the humid air and wasn't running smooth at full throttle but the idle was reliable so I took the prop and spinner back off and mounted the cowl (with the new exhaust stacks) and put it back together. So anyway, I had a couple of good flights with some great pictures and video.

I took mine to the Wings Over Wiscasset airshow put on by the Texas Flying Legends group. I was able to get the four pilots including their P-40K pilot to sign the fuselage. They were very interested in the model and so was the crowd there. I have a video of their performance.

Brought my H 9 P-40 to the Warbirds Over Guildhall Vermont event this past Saturday. It was a three hour drive (with a couple of stops) and I had six planes with me and flew all of them throughout the day. I had three WWI airplanes (two glow and one electric) and three WWII (one glow and two electric). I joined in a scramble for WWI where we chased each other around the pattern. I flew the P-40 in a WWII scramble that was mostly a series of low passes down the flight line. There was an electric WWII scramble that followed where we escorted a big electric B-17 on bombing runs with my E-flite Hurricane and another flyer with a good sized electric P-51 (I forget the brand). I made three flights with P-40 (with the appropriate number of nose overs in the grass but one really good landing at the end) and a total of 16 flights by the time I packed up. I was so busy flying and talking that I never got my camera or video camera out of the car!

So, no pictures or video, but great memories of a fun day with a really nice group of flyers. Beautiful flying site just over the bridge from Lancaster, New Hampshire.

Gotta love it. We did a Wounded Warrior Event at our club last weekend. I also took 6 planes. Dont know if I can manage that again. Got some hanger rash traveling.
