Default 10th Annual Warbirds Over Iowa

This is the 10th Annual event, and features special trophies. The event is one day (Saturday, July 20th), but in the case of windy or bad weather the event will be held on Sunday. Special trophies feature hardwood replicas of a B-17, P-40, and P-47 (see photos). The field is capable of handling large aircraft and we have had good participation from some of the best Warbird pilots in the area.

I'll be monitoring this thread, so let me know if you have any questions.

Glad to hear you'll make it Mark. Since we have always had a good bomber turn out, we have placed a B-17 on the Pilot's choice trophy and the shirt design for our 10th annual event. There is also a B-29 on the Best WWII trophy. Here's what the shirts will look like.

todd I am considering going. I have a turbine powered f-16 that needs some air time. How well do your turbines do on the petromat? 500 feet on concrete is just barely safe for my f-16 but not sure about how much drag the mat creates. Landing no problem but it has along takeoff roll.

Petromat has more drag than a hard surface, but it's more noticable on landing than takeoff. Once you start rolling the drag is minimal. When we have dry conditions (like recently) the material under the mat gets harder and further reduces the drag. I hold brake and throttle up and still have to use the whole thing for my F-15 (1/9.5 scale but over 30 lbs.). The runway is actually about 520' long. Current weather forecast shows about 8mph, mostly North. That is the best condition for maximizing the takeoff since there is no corn to worry about clearing on the North end of the runway on takeoff. Look at the weather report before you come. If there is some Northerly wind I think you'll be OK, if it's out of the South you would have a problem.

Cool, I flew from a mat out here in Grand Island. it was astroturf upside down and with packed sand. The drag was incredible and I could not steer it at all.
I may plan to show up and scope it out, I have a H9 bomber I can fly and a eflite p-51B if all else fails. My f-16 is the tiger scheme like your f-15 but mine is yellow instead of orange.

This is my viper at Grandisland. The bulidings are abandoned.

Look forward to seeing you there. It sounds like the surface they had was much softer than ours. Our surface steers just like concrete and does not have much drag at all. I think you'll find it will work. Petromat is more of a heavy nylon fabric with no padding. Much different that upside down astro turf.

I would think so, it usually dies down around 4:00. I might be able to arrange a special demo around noon where you could fly it to get some in-flight footage of the event (if you still have the camera attached).

essyou35:

I am uniquely privileged to have flown multiple times, multiple birds at Cedar Rapids AND Grand Island.

The character of the landing surfaces is the same.

Grand Island is a longer runway with better over-fly at both ends of the runway (except for the power line to the right)

CR has better over-fly (fewer obstacles, just weeds) on the opposite side of the runway.

The CR runway has a slight downslope towards the north.

Hope to see ya there!

Looks like we may get a nice cool day for it!

The picture is from neither: a private field.

The runway surface at the Skyhawks field can be quite different depending on the amount of Rain. When it's hard underneath (as it is now) there is less drag and the runway is fairly hard. Early in the season it is much softer and provides increased drag.

Current weather report looks good. High temp of 82 with some wind out of the North (runway is NNW - SSE).

The weather report is looking better. Mostly Sunny, wind at 6 mph down the runway. Temp went up a bit to a high of 87, but that's better than the mid 90's we have had all week.

Trailer convoy comin' from Ames!

Frank's bringing a plane so large you might have to widen the pilot stations!

OH ! I'm sorry. Did I load the wrong picture?

You guys must be on something in Ames, that photo is enough to make me dizzy!

I must have done something right, the weather forecast is excellent, less than 6mph down the runway, relatively cool temps (for July), mostly Sunny.

The thing out of my control (Weather) is looking great, now it's up to me to make everything else just as good. Should be an excellent turn out of both pilots and spectators.

Should be packing up tonight and be ready to leave by 6 tomorrow morning.  The Ole Goat P-51 will be back and running better unless we can wedge in a 103" Corsair that has 3 flights on it now.  Dave has a sweet P-47 to bring as well.  Weather looks good too!

John and I were there Noah, we were discussing how your regular presence of the past years was missed.
The weather was great. The passing of a cold front previous night was timed perfectly as it pushed out the hot humid weather we had been having.
As you know the hospitality of the skyhawks is top notch and I try to attend every year.
I did not take any pics but I am sure some will be posted soon.

Glad to hear the two of you were able to get there... thought maybe you were not flying very much this year. Did you fly the P-38? Is that thing ready to go again? John flying that Texan still? Lyle and Steve there again this year? Todd's P-40 fly as good as it looks? Man, I all you guys.

I guess I'll wait for Todd to post some pictures.

Congratulations on organizing another great event, Todd!

Great job Todd, Wendell, and all the Skyhawk Crew for hosting Warbirds Over Iowa 2013. Had a great time flying, seeing some old friends and making a few new ones. To all the pilots in attendance. Well done!!!!! No big crashes and the quality of planes was outstanding.

Hope to see you guys at Owatonna in August
