Do you fly Mode 1? or Mode 2?
My brother and I were talking about mode 1 vs mode 2 and how Mode 2 came to dominate in the US. We both fly Mode 1 and race Club 40 and we are 2 of only the 3 pilots who fly Mode 1 in our area. We can see the advantage and disadvantage of both modes. Who flies Mode 1 or Mode 2 and races? Please let me know what you fly.
Thanks in advance for the replies

I am left handed and I fly mode 3. It really depends, how you are confortable with the controls. The elevator and a ailerons are onmyleft.

RE: Do you fly Mode 1? or Mode 2?
I use to fly/race with Single Stick (one stick with ailerons and elevator, rudder was on a knob on the stick and throttle was a slide bar on the side of the Tx) back in the 70's. When I came back to RC in 08 I could only get a two stick Tx. Since Single stick was a modified Mode II I am a Mode II flyer now. I see some of the Custom Radio Shops now will take current electronics and put them in a nostalgia case. I see I can get a Single stick now but, I would rather have the extra money to buy other items I want for Racing. The nice thing now is that the computerized Tx's can be modified for what ever you want. You have many options besides mode I & II like George is doing.

I fly mode 2 but I can tell you that the best Club 40 Pilot in the south east uses mode 1. I also know a few other guys that use mode 1. I know nothing about it since I've used nothing but 2 but just wanted to let ya know there are some great Pylon Pilots out there that use both

RE: Do you fly Mode 1? or Mode 2?
Most of us who flew "reed" radios found the transition to proportional easier by going to Mode 1. Think about it; Mode 1 was the first mode! Many of todays Mode 1 pilots are seniors (50's 60's and 70's) or were taught by Mode 1 flyers, such as father and son arrangements. We have one Mode 1 pilot in our club who taught his son to fly Mode 2, but that is the exception. My son flies Mode 1. Occasionally I will fly a Mode 2 airplane, but it has to be something like a trainer, where I have time to think! I have taught new radio control students both ways. It's true that Mode 1 is the standard in Europe, and the East. I'm not about to get into the arguements about which is better. There are tons of great pilots who fly both ways. Greg

RE: Do you fly Mode 1? or Mode 2?
Thanks for the input to my question. Just so everyone knows I learned Mode 2 to start with in the mid 70's. I switched to Mode 1 about 30 years ago so I could fly my fathers 1/4 scale Cub. The Cub still flies at least once a year.
Thanks Again,
Bruce

RE: Do you fly Mode 1? or Mode 2?
Learned to fly in Redding, Ca in the mid '70's as a teenager.
Was taught by the best hot dog barnstormer in the area on mode 1.
I still fly all my own planes mode 1.
I fly mode 2 also to assist other people when they need instruction or help in setting a plane up.
It's not a problem when I do fly mode 2. I just respond to what the plane needs.

Greg is correct mode 1 is what was used in the 60's when I first flew RC and was the only mode being used. I got out of RC for a while, flying full size, and when I came back in the 80's everything had changed to mode 2 really do not know why. Both work just depends on what you learned on.

I started out flying Mode 1 in 1972, had flown single channel previously for a couple of years, mentored by a great friend that's still currently and a very, very competitive Q-40 pilot. Then changed over to Mode 2 after successfully flying Mode 1, flew it around 6 months or so, and changed back to Mode 1. I discovered in racing / sport flying that I was not as smooth in Mode 2 verses Mode 1. Been a "Mode 1'er" ever since.
At this point in time, I think I am the only "Mode 1" person at our field. (we have approximately 90 members in our club)
