Turning into a slow build. A little embarrassing, actually. But the Retractable Tailwheel (my first) is installed.

Looks wonderful. Can you make it a larger photo?
Still using the Saito 40?
I am getting closer to a maiden. But still a ways to go.

I can try to get a better picture. It is from a club member who is an accomplished photographer and posts pictures on his facebook page. It flies well with the Saito .40 and hardly uses any fuel. So far the eflight retracts have held up and it is a lot of fun to fly.

The Saito 40 is my favorite engine I own.
I also like the 56 a lot too. I still do not expect it to be a speed demon, though...

I'm planning on putting a saito FA-72 in my Eflite P-51B. has anyone tried that engine yet?
Does anyone have any video of their Nitro powered Eflite P-51b planes?
Guys please post more pictures of how you rebuilt your firewall and throttle setups.
I'll be starting mine soon.

I will take some pictures in the morning for you. mine came out at 6.1 lbs dry. I am flying it with a Saito 100. The plane is built well and can handle most any engine.
For the Saito 72 i would fly it with a 12x8-12x9 prop.
I dont like the flap set up as it allows way to much slop. It does lock up tight retracted but changes a bunch when deployed.
For the Saito 72 i would fly it with a 12x8-12x9 prop.

Yes please post pictures plenty of pictures of the engine mounting and throttle setup.
I'm very familiar with the plane itself. I had three of these in total. Two were electric that I have been flying for two years now. And I have a new one in a box which is going to be nitro.
I lost one due to radio failure. Broken antenna... lost radio signal and down it came. The other electric had vibrated two out of three of the screws that holds the electric motor on the mount. So I came in to land after it went crazy in flight and landed rough enough to do a little damage to the wing where it bolts to the fusilage. Repairable.
I really like this plane. It's fun as heck to fly. And on a bad day, a pain to land. But when you are having a good day it's a blast to fly!
I also believe it will be much better as a nitro plane than electric. As electric it's so easy to slow it down too much when landing that you can fall out of your approach easily. Not to the point of crashing, but so that you lose your groove...
I'm using a Saito FA-72 in my Hangar 9 P-40B and Corsair and they are fast and powerful. I started flying them with a Power 46, and a Power 60 and they are much better with nitro engines.
Actually since I started flying nitro powered planes every plane I like has been converted to Saito powered instead of electric.
I have been using a 13x6 MAS prop. in my Saito 72's so far.
The Saito 72 should work very well in this Mustang.
A Saito 100 would be nuts! I have one in my SIG Hog Bipe and it's very powerful and fast.
I would really like to see video of the Eflite P-51B with a Saito 100! I bet it's something to see!
For the flaps I only use metal gear servo's. Everything else I tried was sloppy.
Here is a picture of my two other Eflite P-51B's before I lost the RAF Mustang III version.
This thread is great! Keep posting your plane pictures and hopefully video too.
I'm quite excited to get this project started. It should be tons of fun.

I can only imagine the power and speed your P-51B has!
It weighs less than I would have guessed. My electric P-51B weighs more than yours and it was fast. But the maximum flying time was only four minutes. That didn't leave any extra time for go arounds when I had a bad approach.
How do you find yours lands? I have been wondering how much better the low rpm power from a four stroke would be compared to a 2 stroke for this plane? This plane needs plenty of thrust.
So far I haven't had any luck finding another Saito Fa-72 or .82. I really like the Saito engines. Very reliable and they sound great. Plus I have a Warbird whistle in mine. The sound from that combined with a Saito engine will be very cool.

Is your wing still removable?

Has anyine tried a Saito FA-56 or a Saito FA-72 in this plane?
If so how well did it perform?
UPDATE
I went with the Saito FA-72.
It was tricky to get the engine centered on the cowl. Not perfect yet.

Sorry I havent looked on here in a bit. I will see if I can get a pic of the throttle set up.
The prop is a Beila 14x8 it is a big load prop. My YS 91 barely spun it over. I think around 7,300 or so.
I race this in the Warbird races out here and fly it with a YS 91 in the silver class. I broke out every time on 35% fuel so I need to run it on 25-30% next time. I was running around 1:50-1:53 in all of the races. Break out is 1:55

WOW!!! LOL A YS 91 in this little guy!?! Thats bad ass!!! :-) I was looking to keep mine elec. but I do love my YS engines! I've flown them for 20 PLUS years and love them!
You have me thinking now! lol I would like to run a 4 blade on mine but I dont think a E-flite 32 would turn that prop?......hmmmmmm

you would need at least a power 60 motor on a low cell count. it wasn't very fast with that prop and it isn't very efficient either. plus my first flight it nose over till it hit the prop. it hit every tip and really screwed it up. 80 dollar mistake. Some have flown it with 115's. I wouldnt have any issues with the bigger engine
