RE: Build Thread: Selextra 500
I weighed again after covering. The TowerKote added 1.35 ounces. That seems reasonable to me. Also, I have about eight hours in framing it up to the point of covering. The build so far has been easy and quick. Next, I'll hinge all the control surfaces and get the engine fit. I'll need to make a hole for the needle valve and will probably have to cut down the right side of the cowl area to clear the muffler on the Big Mig.

Bend the 3/32" music wire for the main gear to shape. At this point I've hinged the control surfaces and set it up on the gear for more bench flying. The canopy is not glued yet that pilot is still AWOL.

I retained the landing gear wire with some old servo screws that have a washer head. Alternatively, you could use small screws and straps cut from an aluminum soda can. The tail skid is a Du-Bro #853 Micro Tail Skid. The main wheels are Hyperion D-50 2" wheels- very light and sporty looking. They can be seen in the side view in the previous post of the airplane sitting for bench flying.

Once I install the radio switch tonight, this baby will be ready to fly. I have a cameraman on the ready for tomorrow, but if the weather is like today, I won't be flying then. Soon though.

I can provide the email to my vinyl cutter if anyone wants copies of these markings. Just pm me for that. Oh yeah, old Capt. B. Happy was finally located in a tavern within staggering distance of the hangar.

RE: Build Thread: Selextra 500
We got some decent weather this afternoon so I went out to fly. The plane flies great. The 10 oz./sq. ft. wing loading lets it perform. In the video you will see the first and abbreviated second flights. About 50 seconds into the second flight, bees attacked the cameraman (you can see them in the video) and myself. When one got between my glasses and right eye and stung me, I lost sight of the plane and crashed it. Damage is to the wing tips and aileron servo mounting (would be an easy fix) and the forward part of the fuselage is trashed pretty badly. I didn't get a good transition at the end of the video between him putting the camera down for us to retrieve the wreckage and then where we show the damaged plane. Also where he tried to show where he pulled the stinger out for me, he points the camera a little high, but you can catch a glimpse of it as he begins to zoom in. The control throws I had worked great and I was going to write them down after finalizing after the test flights. I'll have to peice some stuff back together to post those later.

Man 'O man - what a maiden and a way to end up. The plane looks like it will do anything you want and go where you point it. Certainly, you gave it a good wringing out and the video is proof of the pudding. When I stick one and it's my fault, I can put up with it, but sticking one due to circumstances out of my control is aggravating. However, it's been a super build thread start to finish and it looks like Select Hobbies has a winner in their stable.
BTW, I knew you SC boys were sweet, but I didn't think enough so to attract a swarm of bees. []

RE: Build Thread: Selextra 500
Thanks for the support guys! Rebuild is under way. I'll post more tomorrow. I'm taking photos as I go. First rule of crash retrieval, bring home every piece you can find, no matter how small. Right after a crash it's natural to think you won't fix it, but when you get it home and have had time to mentally rebuild it, you'll get started on it, and you'll be glad you've got all the little bits. This plane flies too darn good to give up on it that easily.

The plane was damaged from the rear of the wing saddle forward. The servos pulled loose and pulled out parts of the sides along with them. The battery traveled forward crunching the rear of the fuel tank and then breaking the firewall loose and took out the bottom forward sheeting. There was some wing tip damage on both sides and three broken end ribs in one panel. The wing damage was easily and quickly repaired by cutting away the necessary covering to gain access and then recovered. All these patches on the wing are on the bottom. Luckily, it did not get into any of the graphics.

I pieced together all the small side pieces and glued the wing mount block back in. Then I started working on the bottom forward sheeting. On most of the parts I stripped away the old covering.
