Thank you Walther. As long as at least one person shows some interest...I'm thinking at that weight, even with a smoke system added, it will be a 1/4 throttle plane. That's good with me though. I'm big on throttle management anyway and I like to have it when I need it. I'm also seriously considering building a set of floats for it. I just did the water maiden on a j-3 cub and I'm hooked. Sooo cool flying off of water. I don't know if you've ever, if not, you should touch and gos are a whole new ball game. As for the paint, I'm thinking probably auto paint if I can match it up. I have an HVLP spray gun that I'm dying to try out. I think it will be good. Thanks for following along, Steve.

Ok, I really don't think that anyone is still following along anymore, with the exception of Walther, but I'll give an update anyway. I'm a bit annoyed that I still need another roll of fabric for just the elevators and the landing gear, but that's life. I will order it in a day or two. Also, I thought I had a lot more of the cream colored fabric than I do for the trim, but I will have to get more of that as well.

I am still following progress, Steve, as I still have to make my mind up on making the kit or ebaying it, so keep up with the good work.

When I covered my 108" span/ 18" chord Mamselle, I bought a 10 metre roll of solartex ( about 30 years ago ) and got left with a lot of useless offcuts like 6" by 20ft from the wings - the size of the rolls of covering material is ok for small models but hopeless for large. I now cover with doped polyester dress lining which comes in at 40 or 60" wide, any length off the roll at dressmakers/walmart etc and only about $2/ metre/yd. this comment too late for you now - sorry about that.

If it were me, I'd glass the wing struts with 1/2 oz cloth, and then paint them.

I always use Solartex, but I measure, to make sure that I order enough. It's fruistrating to run out, in the middle of a covering job.

Scrap is to be expected. The important thing, at least to me, is to get the airframe covered.

I'll soon be ordering Solartex for my project, a 1/5 scale (102") Ryan Brougham.

Thanks for the input Tom. Just curious, what's that red plane in the garage? Looks nice.

An odd looking bird. But that's what I like. Very nice indeed.

That's why I picked it. LOL

I traditionally build Golden Age aircraft, like Monocoupes, Stinson SRs, Fairchild 24s and Rearwins Speedsters. Lately, my tastes are leading to their immediate, slightly more primitive, predecessors.

I know, I don't know why I'm dragging my feet so much on this one. I've probably built four or five planes since I first started this one. And the worst part is, all I need to finish it is a muffler, and paint the fiberglass. I did, however, buy a paint gun and started looking in to matching up the paint. In hind sight, I wish I went with the stits method of covering and paint. Next time. So you bought a 3250?mounting it inverted?

Yes I had one and I thought it was a good mach for the plane, and yes inverted, I also will be running it on FAI fuel, I believe it will be a good match.

So, this is what has been going on with the speedster. Not a whole lot. I ordered a muffler from j-tec that said it was an inverted wrap around pitts. When it arrived, it was an inverted, but not a wrap around. So, I called up the kid at my LHS, explained EXACTLY what I needed and he ordered me one. So i thought. When I go to pick it up, it's a side mounted pitts. Argg. Both of the above would mean hacking the cowl apart. Not gonna happen. I think I found one from slimline that will work. I'm starting to think it would be easier to make my own. As for the paint, I went to sherwin Williams, but the one in my town doesn't Cary auto paint. The closest one to me is an hour away. On a better note, I did manage to complete the fabric. If only I can get some paint...who would have thought finding a muffler would be so difficult. Steve.

Well Steve; I also was thinking about making my own muffler. It would be a lot less expensive. Let us know how you come out.

Thanks hot coals, I usually haul ass at the framing and sheeting, and then die off when it comes to the finishing. I hate that about me. I would love to follow along your Stinson build, so please do. As for the stits method, all my next builds will be done that way. I've watched a couple of builds with it and already fell in love with it. Thanks again for following along and I look forward to watching your pile of wood turn into a Stinson. Steve.

Well, I can't keep making excuses. I just don't have the money right now to finish up the speedster. Usually I get laid off towards the end of winter, sometime after the new year, and this year seemed to slow down before winter even started. I'm raising two kids on just my income alone and being out of work before Halloween is killing me. So there she sits, covered in dust. Enough of me complaining, I just know there's a few people watching and waiting to see it finished, and I don't want to keep making excuses. I know one thing, when work picks back up, this is the first one I will finish cuz I'm dying to see it in the air. Sorry for stringing you guys along. Steve.

Steve; no problem on my end! As I am retired I now think how glad I am not to have to worry about all that work stuff.

Hope you all the best.

I look forward to the day that's not on the top of my worry list. As for right now, this year is worse for me than any other year has been. What gives? I thought the economy was starting to get a bit better, but I don't see it. At least not in my trade.

I am retired out west, but if you want a job above a Walmart greeter it is tough. Retirement has been good here. We have a airfield right behind the park. 8-to-10 of us fly every morning, from Oct 1 to April 10

That's what I think of when I think of retirement. There's a group of about 10 or 12 older gentleman at the club that are there just about every morning. I sometimes get a little envious of them, but my time will come.till then, I'll work every chance I can.
