How do I keep the muffler from loosening? My Chippie came with an aftermarket smoke muffler that uses a thread-in adapter. Although the weight of the muffler should help to keep the adapter tight, it still gets loose enough that it leaks a bit. I'm not keen on using thread locker in the cylinder but need to do something to keep the muffler adapter from unscrewing. Any suggestions? I thought of using Teflon tape but not sure it can take the heat.

Engine is an FA-100.

Your muffler threads are not tapered like pipe threads so tightness will not prevent slight leakage as the threads are not designed to seal.

Use teflon tape as advised & that will stop the leakage & it will prevent any chance of the threads siezing or galling.

most of the locktite products come with a debonder.  i usually buy a bottle of that with any new product from locktite that i buy.  i have culled a few with the move, i have found that the debonders are multi product use so that is also a help.
time to share.  the heading is idiots i have known.  he is oz we have a problem getting good nitro.  said idiot determined that if he used a version of his still he could boil off the excess water.  he uses a gas ring to heat up his liquids. enough said.

Teflon is used in some steam pressure reducing valves. It will withstand constant temperatures up to 500°F.

Before I was forced into early retirement, I was once using teflon tape on some small steam pipe fittings when an electrician asked me if I thought the "plastic tape' would take the heat. He was one of those guys that thought any trades other than electrician were low on the IQ scale. He wasn't very bright himself.

I was introduced to Teflon tape as a pneudraulics tech in the Air Force 50 years ago, working on Titan II ICBM's. Wonderful stuff. My dad, who did his own plumbing, thought it to be miracle tape.

As far as heat goes, Teflon coatings are used in frying pans as a non-stick surface, although I don't know if it is chemically the same as the tape.

I've been trying to track down a 12mm female threaded coupling which would allow two male thread exhaust extensions to be combined. Has anyone found a source for something like that? This would allow me to combine two large radius bend elbows and move the muffler out instead of the sharp bend 90 degree fitting. I have an OS engine that has that type of coupling but it's a different thread.

Hi jay,you need to find a specialist nut and bolt store like i did here. The flex exhaust ends on my 182 were 10x1mm pitch thread.I used nuts to attach chrome pipe extensions. You could always go the flexi pipe route.

Hi mate the 182 twin is already mounted with exhausts on top and carbies underneath.

Good luck with the upcoming surgery, was going to joke with you about that in typical aussie 'black humour' fashion but that offends some so i'll wish you well in traditional style by saying "break a leg mate"

ps i used to hate general anesthetics till i realised they returned me to my natural state which is comatose

old fart i was thinking about asking for a 3 for one deal.  i have up coming cataract surgery later in the year and in the thought of efficiency i thought i might get them to do the lot at the same time.  thanks for the thoughts.
re hot saitos, the big one might go into a texan but a 120 od 2s is also being considered but if we get the formula 1 idea going i am looking at modifying the saito 30 or 40 along te lines of the 0s 26 car engine, virtually no torque band, stop / go engine but in excess of 26,000 rpm is very attractive. saw one of the new dutch / italian 2s racing engines, 32,000rpm guarenteed, one of the guys is putting it is a 105% playboy for duration.
catch ya later

Well Hobbsy was right. I took my Black Horse Space Walker out today. It now has a Saito 56 in it (my oldest Saito) and it ran and flew perfectly.

It has had three engines in it over its two year (or so) life. First was a Saito 72 which was really a bit too heavy and which did not like to run mounted at 8 o'clock. Next was a Saito 62 which bolted straight in and flew the model well but it got pinched for another project and so in went the 56. I should have put it there in the first place. Plenty of power for normal flying, a little lighter and ran just like a Saito should.

Perfect mid winter day here today. A pleasant 17 degrees C (62.5 F), sunny and very light winds.

Cheers

So, how do you pronounce Saito?

I say, "sigh-ee-toe" ... but, I've no idea whether that is correct.

Please, no jokes about "calling the whole thing off".

Shoot sorry mate was talking to someone here while writing and meant to take you up on the high revving os 26 you talked about.Saito(say toe)have the equivalent engine with the sc30 that's supposed to rev to 22000,tho how they do that without desmodromic valve gear is a mystery at the mo.I have a normal 30 in a rainbow 60" and it goes like the clappers and rips a mas 10x6 peaked at 11000.Holy smoke, imagine pulling even 15000 rpm with that combo what do you reckon? it's already way overpowered. What are you doing to fill the time in..chatting the nurses up or out playing tennis?

I ran into a Japanese gentleman one day at the local hobby store, he corrected my pronounciation and said:"suh-ee-toe". Go figure, now I'm cultured!!!

Now that we have the correct pronunciation, I have a technical question. I followed the advice above and retuned my FA-100. The idle is still rather rough and the minimum seems to be about 2300 rpm. I have a good transition from idle to WOT. But, when idling, the engine seems to miss-fire every few seconds. It does keep running, however. I do have on-board glow but, at least on the 2-strokes, that seems to give a smoother and lower idle. At WOT, the engine seems to hunt about 200 rpm around 9400. (15 x 6 APC, 1400' elevation, 75F). Is this normal? I'm not sure how much fuel has been through the engine. I bought the plane used (after a couple of flights) and it's been sitting in the garage for 10 years or more until I pulled it out to fly. I've put less than a gallon through it and the muffler is as clean as new.

I really like the sound and the ease of starting the engine. I am a bit of a nut about "getting things right" so do appreciate your help.

RC_Fanatic- do you think the 100 has a gallon of fuel run thru it yet?

I say Say Toe myself. The one that stumps me is how to pronounce MVVS. ASP is easy. They named it after a type of snake. I used to think OS was an Australian company.

Given how clean everything is, I'd say not much more than a gallon. I guess I am a little impatient! Should I just run a half gallon or so through it on my runup stand? The plane is currently not very flyable until I replace the retracts with something stronger. They are 40-size retracts on a 60-size plane. Even a soft landing seems to bend them. [&o] On the stand, should I run at WOT, 3/4 or vary the speed?

Full-sized practise is to vary the speed during run-in.

Get into the circuit.

I don't think ASP was named after a snake. That would be Asp. All capital letters tells me that it is the first letters of three distinct names.

All those Chinese engines have 3-letter names: ASP,DLE, DLA, DLM, RCG, EME, NGH,.... I'm wondering when NFG is coming out.
