And Jim, this is the way I balanced the Fleet, hanging from a hook above my garage door.
By the way, my Fleet is down for engine maintenance. Had to send it to BJ's Model Engine Service for new bearings. It should eat up at least $300, probably more.

RE: Concept Fleet Biplane
Bob,
Just checked the PC for your reply. It's after 1:am here. I will go through the numbers again in the morning daylight hours and use your examples for CG. I did not build the model. It was given to me by a friend who got it from a friend who acquired it from a guy in West Virginia that built it from Concept plans years ago. All the measurements I took when restoring it equate to those on the plans. There is a picture of it in My Gallery of how it looked when I got it, red and yellow and a mess. I will get back to you soon.
Maybe you could do a fund raiser to help pay for your engine overhaul. I'll throw in a couple bucks.
Thanks much for your help,
Jim

Correct, and specifically a Malibu (1998-2004). I understand this also applies to the Impala and maybe the other GM chassis clones.

As to balancing the 1/4 scale Fleet... I emailed Concept Fleet a few years ago. He told me the CG was 1" in front of rear Cabane mount under top wing.

RE: Concept Fleet Biplane
Eric, I'm going by the plans. If the cabanes are installed as drawn on the plans, the rear cabane bolt centerline is 3/16" forward of the aft CG limit and 13/16" behind the forward CG limit. The CG range is 1", so placing it 1" forward of the rear cabane bolt centerline will give you aircraft balancing outside the forward CG limit by 3/16".
By the way, does anyone need a "Fleet Brotherhood" number?

RE: Concept Fleet Biplane
Bob, slight error in my numbers in post #674. I took a ruler and remeasured the distances on the plan and wing to make sure they were the same. So, the top wing is located correctly according to the plans
The 6" distance from LE to rear bolt center, top wing should have been 7"which now makes sense to me.The pucker factor has returned to normal and I can get on with this balancing act.
Jim
I cut it off three times and it is still to short!!!

RE: Concept Fleet Biplane
Bob,
Finally got the N2Y-1 balanced where it should be, half way between the forward and aft CG range. Interestingly, I had to add 12 0z. to the nose. Used the 3oz. sticks and screwed them to the fire wall. Quarter scale rudder and elevator servos under the rear cockpit where the origional builder had them. US 35 cc for power. Sounds like "old school" building when thing were still simple.

There isn't one of the Kinner engine found on most Fleets. A few have made their own somewhere in this thread from scratch. Others have used the Williams Brothers individual Wright cylinders and turned them around from standard (Kinner pushrods are behind the cylinder) and those look pretty close. The Kinner cylinders are quite tall and narrow compared the the Wright cylinder.
My 1/6 scale Fleet was bult by onother modeler and has the Wright cylinders with the pushrods in front.
Others may know more or have other ideas.

Thanks guys,
I was able to find 4 individual Williams Brothers cylinders from Graves’s hobbies. With the carb from the G38 sticking out of the cowl that’s all I may be able to use. Has any one found an engine big enough to fly the Fleet and have every thing fit inside the cowl?

knucklebutt,
Your Fleet looks great do you have any pictures showing how you mounted your dummy cylinders. I'm in the process of recovering mine it's covered with some kind of fabric and painted with latex. The plane is in need of some repair work so I thought this would be a good time to recover and paint.
Thanks

Mine has a Quadra 35, but the carb sticks out too. I was able to have enough of the cowl left to be able to attach all 5 cylinders. The attachment of the bottom cylinders is marginally secure, but they're still attached...

Daves is pretty much the same as mine except he is using the fiberglass cowl I used the balsa block method. I'll see if I can get some close up photos in the next day or so as mine is packed in my trailer
