RE: 1/4 scale F9F Panther build
Mr Fun came over Monday night and did some more work on his hatch areas to stiffen things up. I installed a pair of Dubro 500TL tires on my Panther and with the wings plugged in and a few bricks to simulate fuel load they held up to the weight of the plane very well. They are solid tires with the outside rubber or vinyl and the inside the same material but aerated. the analogy the Dubro rep gave me was sorta like the dash of your car. The other plus is that they are a little lighter than the inflatable type. I ground some flat spots on the axles and put some lock tite on the set screws. With a battery charge It is ready to go. Right now the Temp. in Chicago for the past couple of days has been in the 90s. Not very fun being outside. It is now just a combination of when I am available and the weather cooperating to get a test flight on it.

Grass field brakes optional will not roll on idle.
SAFETY REGULATIONS FOR MODEL AIRCRAFT
POWERED BY GAS TURBINES
6 - For RC fixed wing aircraft: With the exception of hand-launched aircraft which have no undercarriage
and with a flight weight under 7.5 pounds wet, the model shall be able to come to a controlled stop on
command with the engine at idle on a level hard surface.

I've flown turbines off grass for 10 years. No way I would fly one without brakes.

To compensate for the nose weight mounting hardware, mount, and a few things that finished the plane, I drilled nearly a pound of lead out of the nose. I decided to recast the nose weight. It was then thinner so I shimmed it foreword. It is now the absolute least possible amount of nose weight in the best possible spot. The nose weight is now 4.7 pounds. The CG is neutral on the front wing plug in. The front wing plug in is a little forward of the CG.

Joe, all I can say is "Great Success!" I think you got just what you were asking for , it was a perfect afternoon for a test flight, the wind was calm and almost everything worked perfectly. Here are some photos:

RE: 1/4 scale F9F Panther build
Thanks John Roth for the help. It couldn't have flown any better. Just two things to remember on the next flight. Take the jam blocks out of the mains and don't have the idle trim set to high. All this time building the plane I had two foam blocks jammed in the mains to keep them from collapsing on the work bench. I remembered to take them out as the plane was airborne in its first turn. So that is why the mains stayed down. The first landing attempt was hot with the idle trim high and the nose strut couldn't handle the landing attempt. It didn't stay on the ground so I went around now with no nose wheel. The second attempt was also hot so I went around again. Finally on the third approach I pulled the trim back and with the gear switch up slid the plane in with no damage other than the nose gear strut being broken. The Ziroli B 25 gear have been in a few planes before this one and the nose strut was broken off before. that's where it failed today at the weld where it was repaired. The plane took off with 200 oz of fuel and landed with a half full tank. It could stand to burn off another 50 or 60 ozs before landing. Tim D took a good video with my flip camera. As soon as I get it off the camera and up loaded I will post it here.

Outstanding project and flying Except!!! Flying over a busy highway is just asking for trouble. If it should happen to crash on the highway there could be multiple fatalities. and I'm sure it would make national TV which would make flying jets difficult for the rest of us.
