Looks like PALOS flying field to me.......If so, That highway is farther away than it looks on a video. I'd worry about the trees more than the highway. LOL

The highway is close and that field doesn't have the recommended AMA clearances (it is owned by the park district not the clubs). Pilots there know as long as you fly short of the trees off the approach end you stay clear of the highway...and don't have to climb said trees to get your plane after a landing attempt. There's been some talk of moving the runway to parallel the highway as the open field beyond the runway is huge. But that costs money which the park service doesn't have much of.
I'm so glad to see the first panther fly, and even happier it flew smoothly and came back down in one piece. Looked like you'd flown it a hundred times, not zero. Maybe it's time for a nice shiny new set of gear...you wouldn't want the nose strut to break off, dig in, and have that beauty flip over.
Lets see the rest of them fly!

I judged the size of the jet (large) verses the size fo the cars. Most guys don't realy have a handle on how far their aircraft is from them. Just strap a camera to the belly of the Panther and I think you might be supprized at how far away you are actually flying. I had a house that was 1/4 mi away from the end of a model runway and 90% of the guys would fly over the road,my house and the neihbors and when I brought to their attension they would tell me I was full of ***** and no way they were flying that far away. I told them next time check the size of thier wing span verses the size of my windows and they will see that their planes are smaller than my windows. Problem solved.

Thanks everyone for the nice words. Here are a few pix of the front oleo ram and where it failed at the welded repair. I ordered two more from Robart. I figure if I ordered two that I would never need the second one. The free shipping substantially lowered the price of the second one since it didn't cost any more to ship two. When they come I will give it another try. Hopefully I can learn how to slow the plane down and get it on the runway.

Hi Jofunk,
Great to hear you got your 1/4 scale Panther flying. I saw the video and you need to learn to land with the flaps. The Panther won't pitch up when you lower the flaps. What I do is this, take the plane up to 100 foot. Slow it down to where it is just starting to loose altitude. Lower the flaps and add a little power to keep it flying. Fly it around the pattern for one complete lap. Set it up for landing reduce the power until it starts to loose altitude and make your landing. If the CG is correct, it will slow down when you flair it and it will touch down just fine.....

Hi Larry,
I did land it with flaps. If you watch the video you see me put them up after I belly landed it. I also did a lap at 100 feet with the flaps down and the power reduced. It pitched so slightly down with the flaps deployed. What I mean about learning to slow the plane down is getting more effective slow flight out of it. Things like trimming the idle power down, burning more fuel off, maybe reducing the nose weight if possible, and increasing the amount of flap throw. The belly landing approach and landing was relatively slow. The plane only slid 30 or 40 feet. I think it can be slower.......As for gear doors my plane is not super scaled out. As far as a clean bottom of the plane goes gear up is 90% and doors are about 10% of the efficiency and look. If I had gear doors they would have been gone on my belly landing. I'm not saying that I wont put some on but right now they are not important.

Mr. Fun came over last night. He trimmed down the glass on his hatches and squished bondo in the gap to tighten the seam. He also worked on his cockpit installation..... Actually that is John Roth's "George Bush cockpit" out of his Cougar. I need to give John some tough love and move his plane out of my basement. It won't be done until July 4th 2017 at this rate.

The oleo rams came from Robart. I greased one up and installed it in the Panther. I also cut some foam blocks to get the fuse to ride in the car better. The sketch on the table is close to what the scale nose strut should look like . It is all set for another try. Since I figured out how to load and unload the plane myself,I'll drag it to the club meeting tonight for show and tell. Maybe I'll win some glue.

I put another flight on the Panther today. All three gear retracted this time. In inverted flight it didn't take much down to hold it level so the CG is pretty close. I flew it slow for a while with the flaps down. Nothing bad happened. I landed it on the first attempt . It touched down then floated up slightly and did a few hops to a stop. I cant believe a plane this weight is such a floater. Unfortunately the hops did a number on the nose strut again. It flew for 8 or 9 minutes with a minute of two of taxiing and landed with 40 or 50 ozs of fuel. Vladimir took the strut off the plane at the field and took it home to work on a solution. My flip camera locked up so I didn't get a video to post but a few guys filmed it with their phones, so there may be a video of the flight. I also
made a taxi tank out of a shampoo bottle. We burned through that in the pits playing with the trim and full throttle. Here is a pic Vladimir of the scale nose gear.

Hi Jofunk,
Most guys use at least a 40oz tank for the taxi tank, not and 18oz one. Do your main landing collapse part of the way when the plane is sitting?
If so, then you have to add a spacer to the top of the spring so it doesn't collapse. I had the same problem with my Panther until I added a spacer...

Hi Larry,
I took care of the problem you described on page 20 post # 485. They were mushy to start but the dowels solved the problem. The problem to solve is the nose strut. Anything more than s smooth landing and the lower strut doesn't hold up. The B 25 nose gear that I am using is only a half yoke. My friend vladimir is making a lower strut with a full yoke that is closer to what the Panther used. The Shampoo bottle is just temporary. It's the only thing I had, to give me a little more time, that wouldn't roll off the wing.

Thank Jofunk,
I'll give that a try. Also thanks for the comments on the FJ-1 Fury. I hope to have it flying in a few weeks. I'll let you know how it goes. Lets see if I can upload a photo of the Fury here. Not trying to hijack your thread, just trying to load up a photo...

The Fury looks great. Don't worry about hijacking this thread. Until those other 4 guys get a building fire under their ***** there won't be much to post here. Here is Larry's Fury thread for all those interested in not building out of a box..http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/rc-j...-navy-jet.html
