Default Rustler getting way to hot

Hey guys I have been into rc's for awhile and I wanted to bring my brother inlaw to the dark side. I figured what better way then a rustler cheap strong and tons of parts its a great truck but after about 15 minutes of driving you can actually smell electronics burning and the esc and motor are hot to the point where it will literally burn you. So the background of the truck is it has a castle creations motor and esc its running on 2s. The tires are stock and nothing in the differential is binding couldnt be much smoother. Now I thought the issue was gearing however it is geared 22 84. So I would think being geared like that it would be cool but now I am wondering is it turning to many rpms is that why its so hot. Anyway any suggestions would be great thanks.

More info needed. What KV is the motor? If it got hot enough to burn you than that motor may be toast. If you get it close to or over 200°F, it will damage the rotor magnets and it will be more prone to overheating in the future. Safe temp to stop running is about 170°F.

The motor is a 5700kv.  So is gearing still most likely the issue?  Hopefully the motor didnt get hurt but I guess time will tell.

Yes. Try going down to around an 18t pinion and see what that does.

It also depends on what type of surface you are running it on. In the grass, it will get smoking hot quick. I ran a 4600 in mine for a while and had to gear it like 15/86 and it would still get close to overheating. If you are running it on a smooth dirt surface or paved you may be able to push the gearing a tad higher but I'd shoot for the 15 and under pinion range with a large spur either 86 or 90.

Hey guys thanks for all the info.  I geared it to 19 86 just because thats what I had laying around and its a huge improvement.  I will have him pick up a few more gears to play with.  Thanks
