AMT in a Skymaster F-15?
Hello everone,
Just wondering if anyone has fitted a Pegasus to the skymaster F-15.
Now before everone starts to go off on how power full this engine is on this airframe just stop and read first.
Yes this engine would be an overkill and NO its not so you can fly it flat out and rip the wings off it.
This would be purely for does vertical take offs
I would like to know if you did install one did you have issues with heat.
Difficulty in installing the engine.
Any modifications for fitment.
Was the pipe modified.
Your help would be much appreciated.
Ivan

I installed one in a JHH F15 many years ago. Similar size as SMF15, it's a tight squeeze with roughly 1/4" of clearance between top and bottom of fuse in engine compartment.
I used a combination of BVM heat shield, aluminum tape and ceramic blanket to mitigate heat. Fuse got warm but not excessive.
Versatile airplane capable of a wide range of motors.
Good luck

I will give it a go then. I thought that heat would be an issue but it can't be any worse than my Mig -29 with twin 140. Not that that was a big problem as after some heat protection it was all sorted. I must admit with the F-15 airlines running rite underneath the engine that was a little concern to me. I guess the heat blanket will come in handy
To Garry,
i was more talking 40 pounds as the size of engine going in. I guess the AMT is a little larger in size than other turbines of the same size but that is I guess the down side when you want a Rolls Royce. I also don't think you will loose 8-10 pounds out of a bifurcated pipe. I have a friend with an Avonds F-15 with a Pegasus and I don't think he can do the roll take off with an immediate vertical if the engine is only putting out 30 pounds out the end of the pipe.

RE: AMT in a Skymaster F-15?
I was referring to the fact that a Pegasus only puts out 35# if it is a AMT NL Pegasus HP. If it is a normal Pegasus it is closer to 30#. That's not figuring in any thrust losses from a bifurcated pipe. The Avonds F-15 is probably lighter than the Skymaster F-15.
Not trying to discourage. Pegasus power should be plenty for that F-15. My YA F-15 weighs 25# dry and flies real well on a Jetcat Titan.
Have fun!

Add an external centerline drop tank with at least 20 oz of fuel and you'll be in good shape for fuel capacity / flight time.
By the time you start, taxi, and turn downwind you will be flying on your main internal tanks. Should have roughly 7:30 flight time with the custom jet tech tanks.
Enjoy, great airplane.

Dude,
Yours got hot cuz your pipes were sticking out the back by about 4" I totally remember seeing it fly that day. You had some Marine General at the field and he just kept saying, "Outstanding." I remember hearing your gear doors closing over the sound of the engine, too!
Git 'er done!
