KaP - GREAT pics!!!!
Where did you end up on the CG and flight control throws?

I have read further back that 5 1/4" seems to be a good spot on CG. I am at recommended throws both High and Low rate. Tempted to add more flap though... but overcame it.
Expo on high rate ... 30% from some...

Still have to get engine in. The additional cuts for the 4 blade prop were a pain... then balance... took some time.

I am ordering a Tetra bladder type airless fuel cell for the tank at 20oz so I dont have fuel foaming issues. Personal thing really.

I went with 5.25" for the CG and the recomended throws on all surfaces. Flies like a sport plane and slows down nicely forlandings with full flaps deployed. I've thought about putting inmore aileron throw but have decided against it. It flies very scale like as it is.

It's only the last couple of times I've taken it out that I've really enjoyed flying it. We've got a guy at our field that is always preaching about flying scale and telling me I'm flying too fast. I decided to ignore him and fly it the way I want. That's when I started having fun. (BTW, he does not even own a Mustang.)

I've got a Cessna 182 that I've not enjoyed flying for the same reason.

Oh, one more thing. Watch outyou don't get too slow on landing with full flaps. I've gotten carried away twice and found the stall point at about 6ft. Had to change underware both times.

Final approach I've been doing with full flaps, slightly nose down glide, throttle up a little at the threshold and level off, and let it settle on the mains. Works everytime. Getting the nose high at the end and trying for a three point results in those big flaps blanketing the elevator, with predictable results.[:'(]

THis was a concern that finally worked out. The prop actually was worn away at the prop hub. Didnt happen with the wood prop. Biela said it was the engine overloaded and overheating. thats not it. It must be the the big hit this engine has. Yes, prop was tight and checked between runs. It wore into the wook under the carbon fiber and stopped. I am thinging the larger area of the spinner back plate would prevent this from happening. Its designed for the multibolt hub.. so the smaller drive plate may be a factor. Biela has offered to replace it and Troy Built Models too. I have cleaned it up and will run again with back plate before running another one. Both companies are first class and they have my business.

Spinner mods in progress in background. LOTS of work to align, cut and balance. Finally done.

MustangFever,

Your description is the best I've read so far. Full-stall, float to the ground landings are for trainer planes and rookies. Warbirds need airspeed.

Well, spinner cut to fit prop and balances individually as well as an assembly. One more run in the moring and it will be ready to mount. just about everything else is done. Looking forward to seeing assembled and on it legs for balancing... radio final set up

Exhaust is the 75deg that came with the YS 120 I have on the CG Ultimate (Avitar).   They all are the same.

Getting excited about the Maiden.   Have some 20ga extensions and Y's ordered to finish up the radio along with another battery and Pin fail safe switch.
elec gear is working great....  very pleased.
Still need to install the new Tetra tank (20oz), canopy, exhaust, cowl and unit that slows the flap servo's down.

Business has been CRAZY (good thing) ... rain seeming to never stop... so not sure on maiden weekend yet.

Considering getting a Eagle Tree Guardian 3D heading hold gyro for first few flights.  (cheap Insurance)

I've tried the Guardian HH system and trust me, you won't need it. It won't work on the first flights anyway, you have to get it all trimmed out before the Guardian functions properly. My Mustang does a fairly straight takeoff run with no flaps required. The first time I flew it I pushed too hard on the throttle and it veered off into the grass. Advancing the throttle smoothly solved that problem.

I have never used one...   a friend was telling me the the 3D is a heading hold that can be turned on and off from the trans.   I had no interest in the 2D auto leveling ... that would drive me nuts.  the 3D on the yaw was an interesting concept.   I agree...   throttle management is all that's needed.   I like using rudder so no biggie on that.  Although,  I will probably go ahead and get on to test out on a windy day with a trainer.  IF this plane flies like reported .... WOW...  fun ahead.
REALLY looking forward to the whistle in the scoop and how close I got it to the full scale howl. the engine sounds like a beast.

Getting the tank in tonight... a little closer to the CG and adding foam rubber around it and working on the cowl lower half.

Still waiting on the Taildraggerrc.com 20ga y's for the receiver to flap and aileron with their single multi-connector plug.   20ga on batteries and to the gear sequencing box also will bring all the wiring up to the 20 ga. - yeah, radio equ is like it's a quarter scale.  *laughing*

Ya you will want to have it all worked out for the d'nAeroworks bird!

Your bird looks great, cant wait to see how all those little tweaks and add-ons pay off, hoping you'l get video?

Got some retracts and oleos ordered up, and a sequencer, going to try and fab up some inner doors and see how it goes. Still back and forth on the YS 110 or a DLE 20. Still wrestling with the corsair so havent started the build yet.

Hope your maiden goes great, cant wait for the report.

"ARF''s; because it''s less depressing to take out a box of plane and bring back a box of sticks."

LOVE THAT!!  LOL   unfortunately been there ... got the scraps.

Video is essential.    I looked at doing inner doors as well.  just too much work and having to watch weight with extra batteries and MG servo's.

J - I like that!! I also like it would work with flaps and gear on a 5ch set up.
Made a little progress fitting / finishing the cowl ... opened a second vent hole in the bottom rear for hot air and added another mat of glass to the lower half. Not exactly scale ... maybe it works to add some additional venting scale... added two pieces of aluminum tape (like flight metal) to the lower half and punched holes through it. I still feel like it needs some additional hot air venting to keep the engine cool.

T-Boat, I've got an OS 91FS in mine. I followed the directions on cutting a vent at the rear of the cowl and have not had any problems with overheating at all. With the engine inverted the air comes in through the front, flows right over the head and straight out the back. It's worked perfectly for me.

You will want to duct the air over the head as much as possible, almost more important than having a large opening in the bottom. The air needs to be forced over the head. Like the little details I will post mine here soon. Maidend it this weekend with a DLE20, what a joy to fly.

Battery set up....  Geez... I am having a hard time with this and what I want to do.   The life packs from Tower .. cant figure out what the balancing 'type' connector is.   just says electrifly.   jst, xh, ???  I need to buy extensions for the balance and have no idea what to buy.

I am probably going with the Smart Fly regulator with isolation and two receiver ports and a direct to the retract motors.   The problem is I am programmed for bigger planes... I have 20ga servo wires through out.  some extensions are 24" out to the aileron servos.   THe smart fly system is tempting but probably overkill.

plan as of this moment (subject to change) is 2 - 2100mah life packs to the smart fly regulator (is this really needed) with a fail safe pin switch to the regulator.   A direct battery lead to the gear controller box bypassing the regulator and a direct wire off the other battery to the glow driver.  The batter has deans and 2 universal leads off of it + the balancing connector.

Plan B eliminates the regulator and has the power going through 2 fail safe switch/charge jacks direct to receiver with the spare wires as above to gear and glow driver.

T-Boat, I wouldn't know one plug from another but I do have an electrifly Li-Fe pack in my transmitter. This is the balance board I use.
Hope this helps.

you want the jst-xh adapter. Order one of these universal charge cordsand you can balance charge right through the std charge switch http://www.hangtimes.com/a123rxsetup.html it works like a charm. I think your over engineering it myself. 1 battery for the gear and one for the receiver and servos. Your receiver and servos should handle the voltage just fine without all the regulator nonsense. I've been flying all my planes on 2 cell life batteries no problems. Std 22 gauge extentions also. Keep it simple less to go wrong that way.

I got these air filter covers from Tony Howard. He has an ad here on RCU for scale exhaust manifolds for P-51s.Came out pretty good. They were like $8 a pair. Here is a link to his web site. pacific-scaled-aircraft.com/PSA%20Air%20Filter%20Covers.htm

I bought two sets because I was not sure which way I was going to go with my muffler set using my YS-120. The picture shows both set ups. One was with a Keleo exhaust and the other witha Turbo Header muffler. I ended up replacing the Turbo Header with a Performance Specialities muffler. However, I cannot give you a report on how well they work with cooling as the plane has still not flown. Been to the field several times but the YS woud not run right. I rebuilt the regulator but with healthand other family issues the maiden has still not taken place.

Here is my final set up. I did it moretotry andlook scalethan for cooling. There are 3 of these at my club besides mine. They all look a like so I tried to make mine a little different. Not that you will notice it in the air. I will have to get the iron out and fix the wrinkles before I take it out to try the maiden again.
