Merco 61 twin-plug
As my handle suggests, I spend a lot of time running diesels, but I do use glows as well. I particularly enjoy the classics, and I recently acquired a very nice 1967 Merco 61 Mk. II twin-plug R/C glow engine, which I'd like to run. My question is - do I need to light both plugs to get them working, or can I start on one plug and the other will simply start glowing on its own? I ask because Iunderstand that there's a degree of catalytic action involved and I wondered if the plug had to be electrically heated to start that action even after the engine has been started on the other plug.
Any advice will be appreciated!!

I have one of them too although mine has never been run.....so far . It's only necessary to start it with one plug, the second will light up automatically.

RE: Merco 61 twin-plug
Thanks for all the responses, guys! I had a suspicion that you'd need to light both plugs to get the catalytic effect working. I'd expect the engine to run quite well on just one plug, but Fanatic's comment suggests that you get a bit more power if you hit the second plug with the driver after the engine has been started on just one plug. I may actually try a few tests to see how much of an effect there is - myMerco has already done some running, so a little more won't hurt it!
Thanks again!!
Thanks again!!

This too is a, last of, it is a MERCO .61 petrol engine, it came with a very weak ignition system so I sent it to Terry at C&H Ignition and installed a C&H Ignition system with Synchro Spark. It turns a Graupner 12x6 at 8,800. Not a powerhouse but very smooth and reliable.

hi diesel die-hard
had one of those for many years and manly flights years ago.
it is an excellent engine, what I did was start with ingniter on one plug and after engine runs a minute or so to warm up
I would attach the igniter to the other plug briefly, may not be necessary but I felt better doing it.
good luck and happy flying

Merco 49 "Black Streak" powered VMAR Escape. Kavan silencer fitted with manifold adaptor sold by MECOA/RJL.

A smooth, steady running and very reliable powerplant. Plenty of performance with a 12 x 6 RAM prop fitted.
Many owners make the mistake of under-propping these engines. Prop the 49 or 61 for 9,000 RPM static and they will ride their torque curve and give their best in the air.
