RE: Do you have ESM Electric Retracts?

Fully charged 5cell nimh 6volt rx battery is 7.0. Fully charged liFe generally is 7.5. However, the big difference is that a nimh battery will read less when a load is put on it compared to the steady output reading a liFe battery will(until 80% depleted). So the controller board of the retracts may see a max of 6.8 from the nimh, but 7.5 from the liFe which may burn it up. My instructions with the v3 gear said not to use an unregulated liFe or lipo

In that I use both NIMH and LIFE, my experience is that a fully charged 5 cell NIMH puts out the same voltage as the fully charged LIFE pack.

Here is the instruction sheet I got:

My instruction sheet included a warning not to use unregulated life or lipos. Yours doesn't included that. Nothing else to say about it.
Ive got two of the 2 cell life a123 brand batteries I use in a boat. When fully charged, they read 7.5.
Seeing as someone already posted a bit ago that they had an issue with their gear running a 2 cell life...that might be something to look at.
Mine are run off a 6v rx pack as stated. Fully charged, it reads 6.8. Ive not had any issues...well...except they didn't want to come down in flight while near full throttle. More then likely outside air pressure preventing them from moving.

Your LiFe batteries seem to be above normal? Most LiFe top out at 7.2v and very quickly drop to 6.6v. Here is a typical discharge curve:

As I only have two life batteries, I cannot comment about anything further then what mine read. If it isn't normal, what can I say. I seem to have a pretty good set that holds their charge then. Meh. But sure as hell not going to use them in a plane on something vital as once they hit lvc, there's NOTHING left. True...can see using them for retracts I guess, but I wont use them on an rx. Just my own personal choice.

Congrats on the maiden kahloq. It's always great to seem someone get a victory.
Hope I'm not adding fuel to the fire, but I use unregulated 2S LiFes to power my V3 retracts. I have two sets with about 100 cycles on each of them. So far, so good. Just my (very) humble experience.

Awesome. Ill keep that in mind. My 2 life packs just seem to be the odd ones then. That ESM MIG 3 that's coming out soon is something that I wouldn't mind getting and Id use the ESM gear in that. If I get it, then maybe I'll look at getting a Life pack for the controller. We'll see.

I have had the same problems with my gear. Occasionally one of them will stick in the up position while in the air. It never happens on the ground of course. I know there are a few others out there having the same problems.
I noticed in TBM's latest newsletter that ESM is going back to air retracts and giving up on the development of the electrics. It really is a shame since electrics are so much easier to set up and maintain. Too bad that no one seems to be able to get them right!

Same experience her with my set, Occasional lockup in the air....I have the ESM v3c set.
Alltough I must say that I have ESM v3c for my 50cc P-40 as well and they have been working great without any glitches...

V3C set for me as well. I'm really disappointed that these didn't work out. They were priced right and were capable of fitting a wide range of applications. Hopefully someone will come out with affordable, reliable electrics some day, but right now it looks like even the more expensive brands are having trouble.

Yes, both sets are in use. The rotating set is working fine but the standard set will fail to retract or extend one of the wheels about half the time. Needless to say, I have gotten very good at belly landings.

Glad I waited on these electric retracts... been searching for ESM air ones and now it looks like they will be back soon. Electric ones retract nice and scale, but air is not hard to set up and is more robust.

I think the only electric units that havea reliable track record are Lados but until you pay the price of shipping from France you may as well go with air. If they are not holding air for at least 8 hrs then you need to find the leak.

A couple of months ago I was all set to purchase a ESM Corsair and a set of ESM retracts. Someone with a lot more knowledge than me advised me to stay away from the ESM retracts. I did take his advice and purchased a set of Sierra retracts for the Corsair. Now after reading all these post it looks and sounds like I may have made the choice. Now If I could just fine time to put the Corsair together.

I have two sets of ESM electric retracts first generation and they work fine. The only thing I don't like is the retraction/extension time. After reading all the post it is obvious that the modifications necessary to increase the overall speed of retraction/extension is the root of the problem. Who ever designed these retracts did not consider that speed would be an issue and choose the electronics and material accordingly.
