Is it too late to join the brotherhood? Built my 1/5th scale Sig Cub a few years ago.

I maidened my B.U.S.A. 1/4 scale J3 today That Gemini Twin sounds so nice purring along.. I am surprised at how quiet it is with no mufflers... I think this is the nicest flying 1/4 scale Cub I have built so far .. It only needed two clicks of rite and a few clicks of down to be hands off .. I had the jitters but they went away rite after lift off..Climb out was so easy ,straight ahead , no roll . I settled down and really started to enjoy the flight and started to do things that I normally don't do on a maiden like a hammer head and a roll . I brought it in quite early because I am not used to the Twin and I am not sure of how long the 16 oz tank will last .. The first landing was picture perfect.. So soft and genital , no bounce .. It was a very hot day so the air was thin but it didn't seem to matter .. Those big wings create a lot of lift.. All in all I am very happy and proud of the plane ..

Good to hear that biker. I have the same engine waiting for me to finish my sig cub. Illness in family puts a damper on building.

Bikerbc- got any pics? Congrats on maiden anyhow! Heritageman, hope things will get back to norm, soon. I got silver dope sprayed onto my Taylor J-2 today. I'll let it gas off a couple of days, rub it with some 400 grit again then spray more SIG dope on it. Then it gets the dark blue numbers and trim.

Hi, getting ready to refinish my 1/4 Sig Cub covered in Koveral and Sig dope and am curious. Is the silver to show imperfections in the finish to be removed before the finish coat, or to protect the covering from sunlight, or, make the finish coat opaque like is in full scale? Thanks.

Hi Spaceworm- this is the airplane that is being modeled. The Taylor J-2, as opposed to the Piper J-3, was offered in many color and trim configurations, including gold with red trim. Wouldn't that be pretty? You could use the silver per full scale as a 'protective' base coat on your J-3.

Thank you very much for letting me join the brotherhood.
Finally had some nice weather this evening and got two 10min. flights
in on my cub. I had to add 510gr of lead to the front mounted to
the firewall to get her balanced.
Scale speed flying at 70% throttle with the Profi 76 engine.

Just love it.

Man that's 1.1 lbs of dead weight. Couldn't u have pushed the engine forward until it balanced? & reduced whatever extra wt u have at the tail end?Just my 2c.Rafeek

Hi Rafeek,
I was thinking about doing that.
I bought the cub as is and fixed up dings and hangar rash.
I don't really want to do major mods. I just want to fly it.
Everything including the 6.6Life receiver battery are as much forward
as possible. Other than shoving it on top of the fuel tank. (I don't like that)
I had a quick look/comparison on engine choices for 1/4 scale cubs and
found that some guys are running Zenoah 26cc gas engines in their
Hangar 9 Cubs.
My Profi 76 2 stroke weighs in at 580g
Saito FA 100 approx. 823g would only needed to add 267g to balance
OS FS-120S-E approx. 944g ( just about a perfect weight match) and loooots of power
OS 160 approx. 1200g
Zenoah g26 approx. 1689g
That's 1100g more weight in the front......yikes
but we're talking about center of gravity here to balance.
So weight added to the front to balance would depend on engine choice.

When I have a chance I'll do a dry weight measure, see how heavy
she is in total and post results.

Andreas,You are under powered, but if u wish to stick with the engine u have u gotta balance without the addition of so much weight. Although moving the engine forward might sound drastic its worth a try IMHO. My guess is that if you move it forward by placing a piece of mdf board or plywood behind the engine mount you may end up adding 250 gm only.Rafeek

Rafeek,
Your input is much appreciated and will be taken into consideration.
I will be doing it this winter amongst my Topflite F4U Corsair build.
The cub with this set up is not a racer by any means, but it seemed to be flying very well
at 70 to 80% throttle.
Take off's were great with good climb rate.
However, there is always room for improvement.
That's what it's all about...we do like to tinker.

Andreas
Happy building & flying.

Facia,
If it flys good don't worry about adding weight. It's a cub. The emphasis on on never adding weight has its place - but it's a Sunday flyer for gosh sakes.

Thanks to all for your input on the size of the engine and weight of my cub.
I was away on holidays for a couple of weeks, but am now able to let you see what she
flies like. I have to get used to the glide yet. A bit of flaring and hopping on landing, but
that should get better with more practice.
Not bad for a 40 year old engine.

Thanks Andreas... I'm replicating a Taylor J-2 Cub except I am using spurious 'N' numbers. Everything was masked and sprayed, including stripes. Your Cub flew great and the landing was fine. I am sure many of us have had worse ones, lol. What is the 40y/o engine?

HI Arup,

It's a German built Profi 76 size (12.65ccm) 2 stroke with the last reference of production in 1974. I could only find 3 or 4 posts on the net
other than my 2 cents worth. Most of them are on collector sites I guess it might be ready for the museum,
but I don't believe in letting a perfectly good engine just sit and not use it.

Andreas
