Default Renewing ama membership ?

I flew back over 10 years ago and I'm starting to get back into, can anyone tell me that if I just renew my AMA membership will they send new paperwork and nametags etc? I lost my old stuff so I don't know if I need to sign up as new member or just use the renew function... Thanks.

Hi Bob, do you still know your AMA number? If so you would use the "<label for="ctl00_ContentPlaceHolder1_rbRenew">I would like to renew a current membership or a previously expired membership" option I believe..

go to the website that was posted and click on renew previously expired membership and see what happens when you fill out the rest of the info.  you may not get your old number back but if it matters you can always ask in the comments section.

Bob,
you can just renew. I took 5 years off and just did a renewal. you even get your original AMA number back.

BTW.... I didn't have my paperwork either.

I have my old number written down, but have no paperwork from previous memberships. I remember getting a name tag and I didn't know if they send new ones when just renewing or only when new member sign up.

Bob as noted best to just reapply and request your old number if you want to reuse it and know what it is. I believe there is a cutoff point back when the headquarters were at Reston Virgina and beyond there are no records .

I also believe that if you know the number and request it they will be happy to reassign it to you if it has not been reassigned to someone else as that is a possibility.

What sometime happens is lower numbers that have gone inactive are offered to certain AMA positions as a perk .

Pick up the phone, dial 800 I FLY AMA

Choose the membership option. Talk to the nice lady that answers the phone, they will give you all the help you need.

Thats exactly right.

FYI.... they send new paperwork every year.. new cards every year.. new stickers every year.. it starts new every year. The only thing that doesn't change is the number you're issued... unless you've been away 10yrs.. You will get a new number... no doubt... after that you'll get a new everything.. every year.. as long as you keep your membership current.. or within a few years of current(note:membership not valid in any case unless you pay the fees)... but in any case here... you're brand new to them.

I was out of the Hobby for greater than 10 years, a couple of times, and both times I got my original AMA number back. Although I did call the 1-800 number and talked to the membership help person, to make sure I got the same one back!

Not true. Anyone, not just "certain AMA positions", can request, and if available, receive a lower number. I believe you can even request an alphanumeric ID.

Actually Bob it is true and and certain AMA positions are automatically offered a lower avalible number if they choose. I never said others cannot request such. It was offered to me when when I became a CD as well as most other CD's I know. An offer I choose to decline.

I have been a member three times since the 1950's and have no clue what the first two numbers were as it was not a big issue with me.
