Thunder Tiger Super Decathlon????
Being a fairly new pilot with a LT-40 and a Super Star 40 I noticed a ad in the Dec. AMA mag.for a "new" Super Decathlon 40 It looks real nice but I am wondering if anyone has any experience with it,Its put out by Ace Hobbys
Is it easy to fly?? Stable?? Take off on grass??Good plane or bad??
If I buy it I will put a Thunder Tiger 46 Pro on it.
Thanks JIM

Jim,
the "new" Super Decathlon is just that...too new for much evaluation. Ask again in amonth or so. Thunder Tiger's original Decathlon of similar dimensions was very aerobatic, a bear on the ground and a bit heavy. Mine flew well with a K&B .48.

The ad in Model Aviation magazine states the length of the "new" Decathlon as 55 inches. It is not! It is 45 inches long, the same as the "old" Decathlon. The Thunder Tiger 40 size G202 had been advertised as having a 60 inch wingsspan; It does not! The wingspan is 50 inches. The GP 1/3 scale Pitts Special has, and still is, in some ads, listing the length as 70 inches. It is not! The overall length is approximately 60 inches.
Incidently, the aifoil is symmetrical at 16%, a good all-around performer.

DrGO

RE: Thunder Tiger Super Decathlon????
My brother recieved his kit this weekend. This is the new kit and the wingspan is the claimed 64" I must say I'm impressed with the quaility and construction of this kit. The covering is done beatifully and the construction seems solid. The only thing I see wrong is the lack of explantion in the manual but for any experienced pilot there shouldn't be any problems putting this ARF together. I'll post more info as I get it from him.

The covering is a film but I'm not sure what brand they used.

My brother finished it and it looks great. He's waiting to get his motor so we have'nt flown it but it looks good sitting there. He's going to throw a Saito 72 in it. Once we get some flight info I'll post it for everyone.

This appears to be a 2-piece wing. Can someone tell me how the wings are attached, and what is involved with the field assembly. Are the struts easy to put on? Are the wheel pants and cowl fibreglass or plastic? Looks like a nice plane!
Thanks, Joe

Yes it's a 2 piece wing that attaches with a tube. The pants and cowl are plastic. My brother said it's kind of a pain to attach the struts and stuff. The struts attach underneath near the main gear then they screw into place. You then have a cover that mounts over the struts and gear. It's really a sharp looking plane!

uhh the cowl and pants in mine are fiberglass, loks like plastic but it's not, they are painted very nice and th quality seems very nice.I just got it Thursday and have'nt started putting it together yet but it looks great.I got a Saito .72 for mine also and I can't wait to see how it flys.I was out flying today (28 degrees 10' of snow) it was great I had to put the skis on my lt-40 and give it a whirl. The Decathalon will probaby have to wait till summer to fly so I'm not going to build it just yet it would be too tempting. Let me know how yours flys![8D]

RE: Thunder Tiger Super Decathlon????
I am just buliding a TT Super Decathlon, too. I m trying to install a YS 53 4 cycle engine on it, but the instruction manual doesn't mention how to put on a 4 cycle engine, so I have to do it by my experience, then I found the back plate of the YS53 is so close to the fire wall, even I have to remove the square plastic plate of the engine mount to let the engine not to touch the front part of the cowl. And then I found also the throttle horn of the engine almost touches the fire wall, so that the inkage rod from the servo just leave less than 1" out of the fire wall, I am afraid that the throttle control will not be smooth enough.
So is there any of you use any 4 cycle engine on this plane? How's your experience on the engine mounting and operationg?
By the way, the fuel tank installation whiten my hair ,too. Need to work ini the very narrow space to fix it inposition, and the throttle linkage rod just goes under the tank and being bent to link to the servo horn, gee......
This is a beautiful plane, but not vey ideal on the aboce two issues to me. I have no idea on its performance yet, so want some input from you guys here.
Billy

RE: Thunder Tiger Super Decathlon????
Hi guys!
I know this is an old thread, but I am trying to find as much information on TT Decathlon as possible, since I have an opportunity to order / buy one. I haven't deciced yet if it is going to be the red/white or yellow/white combination.
I'd like to know what do you think of this ARF construction? I must say that I like two piece wing joined with wing-tube for easier tranportation (ok, the model is not that big, but this helps). I can see that all the parts are fiberglass, and I hope that there is no ABS plastic on the fuselage - just plain good old balsa & liteply. I'd like to see as much pictures of the finished model as possible, especially interior, RC components placement and so on.
Claytonj - do you have pictures of your brother's finished model?
Is there a web address where I can download PDF manual for this bird? Unfortunatelly there is none on TT and Acehobby websites...
Thanks
Sašo

RE: Thunder Tiger Super Decathlon????
hmm.My TT .40 arf has a 1 pc. wing.I was happy with the fit on most parts. I didn't use much of the supplied hardware. The screws supplied were bad quality. The covering is nice and I think it make a beautiful plane when completed. I fitted a Saito 80 on mine with the stock muffler.I think it flies well but it's not for anyone who still in their mind consideres themselves beginners.I'm not using the wingstruts on mine,im not concerned about the scale look, thyey more trouble to me than I think they are worth. Some planes must use them though, but without a functional door and the way this wing is joined,it's not necessary in my mind.I love Decathalons, they have a class look to them and they are fun to fly.I hope my H-9 Taylorcraft is as well as a performer.
