Where can I have a custom spinner made?
I've got a vintage Bridi kit (Brown B-2 racer, Miss Los Angeles). I just measured the cowl tonight for a spinner. The diameter is 2-5/8". That's not a common size.
Does anyone know where I might be able to have a custom spinner made up? It doesn't jneed to be polished... it'll be painted to match the rest of the plane...
Thanks for any tips and advice.
Bob

Try Joe at [link=http://www.zingerpropeller.com]Zinger[/link] They make spinners to order don't know the cost.

Thanks, Fred. That was a real eye-opener. It looks like I'm going to have to 'cheat' instead. There ain't no way I'm going to spend that kind of $$ for one spinner... :-D
I wonder if the rules would allow me to make a scale spinner to be used for static display, and then a stock spinner (though it would be 1/8" undersized in diameter) for flight....
Thanks for the link. I'm sure that others would appreciate reading it too.

Hmmm, I sorta said the same thing in Post #7... Glad that someone agrees with me...
Can anyone comment on whether it's legal to have a scale spinner for static scores, and a non-scale spinner & prop for flight? That'd solve a lot of problems. I wouldn't want to make my own spinner and risk having it fly apart on a running engine...

N1EDM,
The rules for Sacle Masters, AMA, and Top Gun vary a bit. However, the general rule is that whatever you remove after static has to be replaced with a similar item. From my experience the judges don't heavily scrutinize the parts, but they need to be pretty close...

I know, I've said this a hundred times but..............
Guys why don't you try making your own spinners out of composite.
Buy a small lathe, Habor frieght, $350.00, on sale and make more than just spinners on it.
This plug is for my CMP 70" Zero.
Not hard, just a different aspect of building.

The lathe is no problem I have one at work.
I'm concerned that whatever I build won't be balanced enough to put on a device spinning at 10,000 RPM.
Scalecraft, that looks really interesting. Could you give me the details about how you made the backplate, etc?
I could easily make something that would work for the Static display, anyway.
Thanks,
Bob

RE: Where can I have a custom spinner made?
Hi Todd
Is that what it is!!. I keep thinking I have worthlees ideas.
But I still use them. I like to make as much of my own stuff as I can.
Bob, since you asked. The backplate is the easy part. Its just a piece of trued up and turned 1/8" aluminum plate to match the end of the backplate. For a radial spinner its easier since it doesn't have to match a fuse. If you have to match a fuse, turn the backplate first to match the fuse, then shape your spinner to match your backplate.
Now the tricky part that we do is to put a step down in the spinner to sit in a groove that the backplate has cut into it. it makes a smooth transition from spinner seam to backplate.
Anchored by a bolt through the center.
The layup of a composite spinner is done in triangular shaped material layed in layers that overlap slightly. It is more time comsuming than difficult. Balance has not been an issue. If it has a balance problem, it can be corrected by drops of CA glue. The spinners don't have much mass. But are very strong. My buddies FW190 composite spinner sees around 12,000 rpm. It has nosed over a few times yet the spinner is still functional. Its layed up of regular "E" glass.
hope this helps

RE: Where can I have a custom spinner made?
What weight fiber glass? Will something as small as 3/4 oz quadrupled work? What is the composit material and where can I get it? What kind of epoxy and again where can I get it?
I think that this is worth a try! Thanks

RE: Where can I have a custom spinner made?
The now defunct Scale R/C International ran a very good two part article on making glass spinners. I have yet to try it but I certainly will at some point in the future. Maybe someone knows if the articles are available online?

RE: Where can I have a custom spinner made?
Sebo, while I haven't laid up a spinner before, from my other work with glass, you don't want to use 3/4oz cloth! It is only for finishing work, not something that is structural. I'd suggest 4 - 6 oz cloth in several layers.
Also, Gene Barton could spin you an aluminum cone. I beleive his prices are in the 100-200 dollar range, or at the size you are talking about I would imagine a local machine shop could easily handle the work, fur much less than tru-turn, but it still wouldn't be cheap!

Thanks. I'm going to try to make up a static one first. I will use heaver cloth as you have suggested. At the same time, I think I will take the machine shop approach to create a functional one. That sounds like the better way to go. Thanks for your input.

RE: Where can I have a custom spinner made?
Hi Guys,
I've been having a problem finding a scale looking spinner for my Flair/CMPro Mosquito.
Incredibly the answer was on my own doorstep - well about 15 miles from my doorstep to be precise.
I have found a guy, who apart from being a superb modeller (currently building a 12ft DC-3), has his own CNC business and specialises in these kind of projects.
I provided him with a pattern based on the spinner profile from the 81" Brian Taylor Mosquito plans last weekend, and he has already done the programming and turned me a pair of scale spinners. The cut-outs for the props have still to be made because I haven't decided whether to use 2 or 3 bladed props yet, but already someone has ordered a pair from seeing mine in his factory!
He can make spinners for virtually any model aircraft, and it would help if you could provide the pattern. His name is Dave Brown and his email is [email protected] - I hope this helps some of you out, and I will post pictures as soon as I can,
Andy

Another place to look might be Gene Barton machine service. I think his website is www.genebarton.com.
