Mine is coming on monday , my question is what is the eng that will power this plane , I'm looking to go gas if a g26 is too small would a ryobi 33cc be good enough?

RE: New 81" P-47 ARF coming from Hangar 9
Mike I'm curious as to the flying characteristics of it. The H9 60 size mustang is the only warbird I've flown (plan to have more though!) and I know it is more of a sport scale so it is pretty much an easy flier.
I do want to get into a gas, 80+ inch wingspan plane and have looked at several of the aerobatic models but our giant scale fly-in was packed with nothing but aerobats (edges, caps, extras) and almost no warbirds. Is this a bad choice for an entry level gasser/warbird?

Mike, thanks for sharing info on the P-47.
I'm interested in how the CG worked out with the engine used in the one you are flying. I'd be using a G-23, and curious about any weight additions required in nose or tail.

Mike,
I checked with my lhs and told them who you are and what you said they still said I'll have it next week .I don't care when it comes everyone else is predicting mid to late sept so this is when I look for it to come.Eng size is my question can I get away with using something in the 30-35 cc range? I want to put smoke on mine and have it give the appearance that it was hit but limping in.

The P-47 will actually be out in November. Sorry to make you guys wait. Not sure where the LHS is getting the wrong info, but it is wrong.
The model flies a lot like the 60 size in many ways. Very aerobatic and light. Though with flaps, it lands amazingly slow and solid.
Balance with te 180 is fine, with batteries forward. If some engines require nose weight, dont sweat it. the model is so light its not a big deal.

Mike,
It looks like quite a few of the concerns that previously existed in the H9 1.50 P51, have been addressed in this new bird. One thing that I can't tell by the documentation in this thread and the Horizon Website, is if the quality of the landing gear's plywood mounting rails have improved?
I've had to replace mine and so have two other members in my club. It also looks like others in this thread have had the same trepidation.
Regards,
Oriole

i just got home from the dogs fly-in at dayton, ohio. the prototype mike mcconville mentioned above was there and i saw it fly. it flew very nicely with the saito 180 in it, using an apc 16-8 prop. the pilot who flew it is a very good pilot. he was flying it down the runway and did slow rolls nearly 1/4 mile long with very little deviation from dead straight. so while it looked good up there he may have been doing a bit of compensating that wasn't readily visible. however it looked very good close up. sorry i forgot my digital camera . anyway it looks just like the site shows it.
the one thing i wonder a bit about is the retracts, and how they will do on grass runways. they look much better than most arf retracts though. they are metal frame, with decent looking tubular painted metal oleos like robart sells. but the oleos are maybe 5/16 diameter. the pilot couldn't tell me whether the retracts are made from aluminum or steel, but if they are aluminum the material looks a little thin to hold up well on a bumpy grass runway. but for good pilots who fly off paved runways they would likely do just fine.
it flew ell enough to keep up with all the other planes up at the same time and looked great in the air. all in all i would say this is a big step forward in warbird arfs and will sell very well for them. it is covered in typical slightly shiny covering that looked like ultracote to me. a very nice feature is the top of the plane comes off for very easy access to the radio compartment.

3 1/2 is indeed a bit small for the wheels..
i am thinking in electrifying one in 12S maybe with a big axi 5330 (but they are mentioned for 10S....)

Stalls are amazingly gentle and straight away. You have to work at it to get a tip stall. It will fly very slowly. With flaps down it'll amaze you at how slowly it'll land.
Thanks for posting the photos from the DOGS. I thought the dummy engine was going tp be put in it for the DOGS, but I guess they ran out of time. That is the same model I was flying in the vids mentioned above.
By the way, almost 100% of our test flying through th development of this model was off of grass. The retracts hold up very well.

Just checked chiefs pricing on the P-47. Same price as Horizon, but with FREE shipping. Horizon is charging ground freight, plus a $17 surcharge. Horizon's site also still lists late Oct. for delivery.

Either Chief is confusing this with the new 60 size P-47, which is now shipping, or he is going from old information. Trust me, working with the factories to have these produced is my job, the 150 size is not shipping till mid to late November at the latest.
