The wheels are Dubro 4 1/2" lite treaded and the hinges are a modified version of Robart's (350) large door hinges. I tried using the flat nylon hinges but could never get the doors to work properly without a large gap between the door and wing. Hinging on a curved surface is a pain!

Hi again well I have had a chance to go over your pic's, and I have acoupla of questions why the change of hart on the nylon bushing??, and the strap around the strut I assume is fixed. also it looks like you went with the scale shape of the barn doors. well I have two days to the out a coupla of systems so will be plenty busy.

Thanks for the additional pic's

Bob T

PS Did you add the lighting holes in the ply for the tail wheel?.

The nylon tube was just a temporary fix until I worked all the bugs out. A friend of mine is silver soldering a brass tube onto a brass plate to mount on the back of the door. I'll post pics when possible. The strap is bolted on with a 2-56 x 1/2" bolt going through the front tabs, it has a 1/8" tube cut 3/16" long placed between the two tabs. This keeps the tabs separated allowing room to mount the ball links on each side.

Hope this crude drawing helps.

Here's a shot of the TF cockpit kit that is to get more add ons. I added a few small plastic strips and tubes to the lower dash panel, but I'm not sure the panel is really accurate. It should be alright when it's all done though. I'll have to spend some time trying to get the cockpit done well with the opening canopy and all.

Dave B posted a pic of the pnl in one of the threads that might give you some help, but if you are not going actual scale, it looks good and no one but a real strict scale dude will ever notice.

I need more time to build

I've only just begun on the cockpit and can see I'll be spending a good amount of time in there now that I'm getting some other reference pics. Lots of switches and tubes and stuff to be added. I did the bezel rivets this morning around the instruments. Next will come the dash panel switches. I'll do those with short styrene glued to the panel probably.

Wulf we were discussing that plane a few weeks back... This is a dash from a Good-Year plane 1D the armament panel is missing from the top of the dash, and 1 gauge, is missing,, That cockpits dash is correct for the -1Ds,,, But it would be wrong for a scale job in a corsair F4U-1A with a bar canopy. That style (bars)canopy was used on the 1Ds wiith a LOWER than Buno 57583.AFTER that #, the bars were eliminated from the canopies

That pic is fantastic, thanks! I was watching the thread quietly when you guys were talking about it. Very interesting and informing.[sm=thumbup.gif] I was looking for something just like this picture. It looks like I've got a good start on the dash panel after today. I'll have to cut out the cheesy TF gun sight square and build a real one. I've got a few deviations on the dash, but not bad. I can do a much better job on all that piping underneath now. I'm now in need of the side panel shots too I guess as those are next tomorrow. Did you guys post any on the other thread?

I sure do like adding in all the stuff to the junky cockpit kits. It seems like I've always got some kind of little plastic item around the house that I'm stealing from the junk drawer to liberate into a new cockpit piece like an air vent or something.

Dion, I just found your thread on making the TF cockpit. Where were you when I got my junky one??? I think I can get it similar to yours with some effort. All those pics on the thread were fantastic. It's surprising how far off the 1/5 cockpit is. There's a lot of things that could easily have been molded right into the original, like all the rivets on the back panel, much of the side panel dials and things. I only hope my airbrush skills can get up to speed to do the shading as well as you did there. Excellent work.

I could use one of those little airtanks and the top dash panel with the armament switches if you have any!! Seems like some plastic tubing and some other odds and ends can make up the gun sight, but if you've got one of those handy, let me know. I'm in. I've got some copper wire for the hydraulic lines and have covered some of the pieces in Flitemetal so that they can be better weathered when painted. Thanks for your help.

I've got the Dynamic Balsa cockpit rails to install in the fuse sides. But I'm wondering how best to set up the angles. Seems like the scale orientation was to angle the rails at approximately the same angle as the top of the fuse. This being so, then the rails on the inside of the cockpit will have to pivot slightly as the rear of the canopy drops. So, I'm wondering if using the DBalsa rails with the I beam slides can be done on the front rails inside the cockpit. If the flex is too great, the canopy will distort. Should I just use the slotted rails and use a small flat head screw to slide through the front rails in the cockpit area instead of the I beam mounted on the bottom of the interior canopy framing. Is it an issue? Or how best to do this job?

Dave

Well like allways when I ask my self a question, I have to try to get a logical ansure, as it turnsout all three had flutter which causes alittle vibration at full blast, Just enough to see it and feel it. (about 70-75 mph ) on my back yard gage, the Fan has a three position switch, so when I backed off to next lower speed you could not see any flutter or feel any vibration, So with my nabors movers wanting his stuff fan etc We broke rig down aand guit, Now what does this mean well becoues D. B system is the simpelest that is what I will start with if it hold up after a few landings that it for my build,

For those watching this thread and in the build process go with what you build skills will let you do. as it turned out all tested were goodsystems and usable

Hi from Italy

Most of this thread is about the Top/Fite Giant Scale Corsair kit

Fact is its not to exact scale but is an exelent flyer and with a few easy mods it will pass all but the real hard core scale builder

Moving along steadily now, trying to get things a little closer to scale. Here's a portion of today's efforts. I should be able to get a few of the things in the plane tomorrow.

Here's my lighting system for the cockpit I made from DBronk's ideas using yellow LED's, a resistor, micro toggle switch and a twin AA battery pack from Radio Shack for about ten bucks. I'm mounting the LED's in aluminum tubing to make the spotlights. The effect is good and the lights are the perfect brightness for inside the cockpit. Should look sharp. The LED's fit right inside the tubing which will be epoxied carefully to a ply mounting plate with the wires run out the sides, or bottom of the cockpit kit.

slowly getting more done and into the plane now. You can see that mr. Wheeler Field Pilot had to have some primitive, bone-wrenching, no anesthesia type surgery to his legs. Perhaps a bit of polio in his background, but the cockpit is pretty short. I sanded him down pretty significantly on the power sander too, figuring he didn't need the extra biceps and quads to fly the plane. Plus it helped him add some needed flexibility, being as muscle bound as he was[8D]

LOL;; I use my orbital sander at work for a self inflicted massage. I PUT the sander in one hand and put it on my back, then lean against the sander and the wall..That really limbers up the backSo you didn`t hurt him at all..He probably wants you, to do that some, more too..Not easy spending day in, and day out, in that cockpit ,you know

The guy's like Dorf as a pilot right now. CA worked pretty well to remedy the fractured area They really beef these GI Joe guys up. Hope no depression sets in now that he's off the juice, he's got a lot of flying ahead of him I hope. I don't think it's too noticeable when he's out of the plane, has kind of a Bull Halsey, top heavy look to him

It's pretty much done now, except for sewing on the seat belt connectors and cutting them to fit "Chesty". Lights don't come in real good in the pic, the effect is subtle but neat.
