New Stingray First Flights!
Nothing can describe the feeling you get when you take your first turbine jet up for the first time solo! Talk about exhilaration!
My Stingray, complete after 2 and a half years in the making (classes tend to get in the way...) was successfully flown on Tuesday. Attached are two pictures my girlfriend shot of it during the flight. Awesome, just awesome!
Wren 54, manual start for power - control by Futaba 9ZAP + PCM Rx w/ 4 JR Digital Servos on elevons/rudders
Trim brakes and wheels, SpringAir retracts, Robart struts.

RE: New Stingray First Flights!
Congrats Nighthawk.
I have built and flown a Stingray and had lots of fun with it over 2 years before I sold it. Mine only took 2½ weeks to complete, thoug I had a SimJet 1200, SpringAirs/wire legs, JR servos on it and functional speed brake. I just loved the precise handling of this speedster.

RE: New Stingray First Flights!
Thanks, all. I got another flight in on it yesterday, and finally let her loose. Talk about quick! And that Wren sounds SO good! Pictures of the girlfriend/photographer + airplane to come...
I flew it off of a grass strip here in Starkville called North Farm. Its a chunk of unused territory owned by the Mississippi State Agricultural Science Dept. that is unfit for growing any of their genetically engineered cotton, so we fly off of it.
Anyway, I need to get her prepped for our (MSU AIAA Student Chapter) fly-in fund raiser, so until next time....

nIgHthAwK17, congrats! Nice plane! They really haul ***** at full power...
What did you think of the handling? As Stig said, his handled well; yet mine and a few others I know of seem to have a small roll instability... Could I ask you to post some photos of your servo linkages, internal hardware layout, list what servos you used, etc?
I'd love to find out how to make mine settle down. In a long straight pass, it'll roll off by as much as ~25 degrees by the end. It make the low passes pretty sketchy. My Hotspot stays dead level in the same situation...
Thanks, and good luck with it!

Woketman,
There are a good many of us who fly out at North Farm. Many of whom are classmates of mine.
Kelly W,
Mine flies great! As far as roll instability, I haven't had any problems with her, but if you ask her to roll, she certainly will! I think I had to tone down the recommended aileron deflection amount, but added a bit more elevator.
My servo linkages are 4-40 Dubro, with the nice clevices, and Robart control horns. Servo side I used the beefed up Dubro servo horns. Hinges are Robart hinge pin. On the four control surfaces I used JR digital servos ( I think 8411's on the elevons, and I think 3000-series digitals on the rudders, whatever fits). Unfortunately, Kelly, I don't have any pics of the interior - sorry!
If I can get my homework/projects done early, maybe I can get some more flights in later this weekend!

RE: New Stingray First Flights!
Congrats on your new jet. I am in Jackson and graduated from MSU. Are you a classmate of William Lott?
I have two Wren 54's and two Wren 44's. I get a lot of abuse for not buying a JetCat but I wanted to build my own engine. Did you build yours?
I have designed a new jet (picture attached) but I don't know how to figure where the CG should be without just guessing. I need one of you guys in aeronautical engineering to tell me how to calculate it. I found a CG calculator on the internet but I don't know what the mean aerodynamic chord should be. Any idea?

Yeah, I've been smiling ever since she first flew!
Next time I get my Stingray out, I'll be sure to get a picture of it with my girlfriend. I've been wanting to, but the weather here in north Mississppi is getting pretty chilly...
And yes, Will Lott is one of my classmates. Don't worry about the JetCat flak - I don't. If you (Hal) have some top-down drawings of your jet, I cna help you out with your CG position, if you would like.

Hal,
The safest approach is to make a smaller scale balsa or foam glider. You can then determine the best CG location by trial and error. If one of the guys can help with a calculated CG that would be a good starting point. However, it would be best to check it out on the glider before putting your plane at risk.
