RE: GROUP BUILD - Top Flite Giant Scale F4U Corsair
Gentlemen,
As some of you are interested in this servo-operated gear door system, I post a few close-up pictures here. This system does not have a lot of moving parts. It is simple and it works. Just another alternative.
I know the construction is obviously not very neat. The excuse is that I use this airplane as my weekend flier.

Remember my question about the cowl flaps, well I cut the front of the cowl out, and cut it into strips to do a little experimenting, If you are carful and you make a jig with the right conture, apply just the right amount of heat, fiber glass ie: polyester rizen will bend and keepits new shape.
Looks like I will have to make two jig's one for each size flap, and I think I will add a layer of gloth 3/4oz just to be safe..
Just thought I would pass this along, as no one seamed to know this would work...

Thanks for the update and glad to hear that can work. Post some photo's of your jig and progress. What did you use for the heat source?

Thanks for the answers guys. I was kinda hoping that this thing didn't become a crash waiting to happen with the gear doors. To me it seemed a bit of a waste to have such a large model with wide open spaces with the gear retracted.
I still have to take some pics and let you guys see where I'm at, hopefully this afternoon,
I'm starting to get jazzed to get building on this thing again after reading this thread and I think I've located an engine for it. A club member has one with a Toni Clark hydramount for a decent price. Any of you familiar with this mount. Can't seem to find much info on the web-site.
Cheers,
Dave

Hi every one
Help[>:] I am just getting to the time to fit the cowl, and I am finding the stans cowl is about a full 1/4 inch smaller in diameter than the abs furnished, Hear is the question, How doyou get the engine hube to be centered with out cutting a huge hole for the G62 head??[>:] The abs cowl will fit over the engine with only a trianglar hole for the spark plug
any one with a suggestion

RE: GROUP BUILD - Top Flite Giant Scale F4U Corsair
George, I put a small wood screw into each side of the box when I glued it. I'm going to line the face of the joint seam with carbon fiber epoxied on and then reinforce the back side of the joint with carbon fiber cloth over and around the tri stock. That should do the trick. It wouldn't be tough to just cut a whole new 1/2 or 3/8" ply firewall. Just be sure to drill some holes and put dowel reinforcement in there, or some screws and then do the back side of the joint too.

I built mine per plan and instruction, then around the out side I drilled two each leg 1/8 holes about 3/8 deep and put in 1/8 hard wood dowel with CA. I used aircraft 5 ply for both the fire wall and th isolation mount

BOB, COULD you tell me what position your cylinder is laying at,when looking from the front, so I can give you some info.my email to you was incorrect I was thinking about an AU-7 , which is somewhat similar to a F4U-5,with the cheek scoops,, and the F4U-7 is somewhat similar to a F4U-4 with the chin scoop.

Hi Dave
YES, thats what I am looking for it looks wide enough, and I think I can make a mold so that I can just add it to my cowl, I might be able to make it functional would be neat as it would put cold air directly on to the head, I understand about the dash numbers but I just can't see having the head stickking out, its bad enough to have those big exhaust ports stickking out, I have serched the treads and I don't find any one mentioning this problem it would be nice if some one else wold jump in with some help

RE: GROUP BUILD - Top Flite Giant Scale F4U Corsair
This is to reply George's firewall question.
I replaced the supplied 1/4" ply firewall with a 1/2" aircraft ply firewall. As Wulf190 said, this is not hard to cut at all.
I then pinned each side of the firewall with four 1/8" hardwood dowels. So, 16 dowels altogether. The firewall and the wood dowels were all glued together with 30-minutes epoxy.
I also epoxied spruce triangular stocks on all four inside walls behind the firewall.
Building this firewall per instruction may be just fine. But as I have seen an engine flew away from a failed firewall of an H9 warbird, I don't want anything similar to that happen to me.

Seriously, if you REALLY want to see my pathetic progress, I have my camera in the shop and will take some pics. I also want to take a pic of my stripped H9 Corsair fuse as a comparison for size on this monster we are all building. more to come tonight...

RE: GROUP BUILD - Top Flite Giant Scale F4U Corsair
HELP,HELP,
I knew that when I got to this phase of the build That I would have problems,Not being mechanically inclined. My problem is as follows I bought the cup mount from B&B Specialties for the G62,when I mounted it thespring and the(Ibelieve it called a spline) the cylinder that has 2 notches in it for the spring to set it. it set out about 3/8" of an inch beyond the mount so when I go to mount it on the fire wall it wont sit flush.Do I need to build out with spacers where the mount bolts to the engine????? or?????????????
Any help would be GREATLY APPRECIATED,
Thank you in advance

I would recomend you reconsider using a spring start on a G62 ive see 2 of my club members bit when using same nothing serious, just pride was hurt me included. so I would sugest using a product called JUMP START now if you ware a clove you cal vary easley hand start, you still have to be carfull as you can get a kick when priming

RE: GROUP BUILD - Top Flite Giant Scale F4U Corsair
Hello I just joined this post and have a question I just bought the the giant corsair and will the g62 fit inside the cowl without cutting any holes in it ? I have read your post but from what I can tell the spark plug won't clear the cowl I dont want to cut any holes in the cowl. I also purchased the fiberglass cowl from fiberglass specialties.

Hi P51 savage
In my first build I used a fiberglass specialties cowl a TF-20 and the only holes, I had was for the plug plus 2, 1/4 dia. one was for the jump start switch just the tip stuck thru, the outher was for the fueler. On my new build I have a stans cowl and it is a full 1/4 smaller in dia starting just aft of the nose ring to the cowl flap hinge line, will have to cut a big hole for the head, So I called Fiberglass Specialities to ask about there new cowl ie: a TF-20B, turns out it is a copy of stans with some miner changes, I had them measure both molds the old and the new and they confirmed the differance in size, So if you don't want to cut any holes send your TF-20B back and re order a TF-20, The big differance is you will have to lay out and cut your own cowl flaps. If you have further question about the cowl PM me...
