We have been flying our Reaction all year with our custom gear and struts. Lots of guys using them with good success off pavement and grass.

I fly all the time from grass. No problem with the retracts. I use Unibrakes because I had some. However I now don't see any need for realy powerfull brakes on grass. I have never had to use them in anger. I usually use them to show off to my mates. "Hey guys look I can stop short". It is perhaps a little different when flying from hard surfaces.
Looking back, I think bruce was right.!!!

Regards

Don't forget that the R54 usually needs nose weight. That is the only reason I intend to use the Kavan instead of the many other sets of brakes I have lieing around. Well, that and the fact that I fly 90% off of grass, so I don't need a brake anyway.

I just got a JetTech (Gary Mueller) Kevlar tank for my R54 and thought I would post a photo.

As is typical for Gary's work, its very well made. It drops right into the space on the R54 with no mods to the plane.

I was curious, so measured the capacity of both the JetTech tank and the stock DuBro 50.

The real surpise is that the DuBro is actually 1800 ml, which is 60.8 fl oz, way above the claim of 50 oz or 1500 ml.

The JetTech tank is about 2240 ml, 75.7 fl oz, about 15 oz more capacity than the DuBro.

The tank is $115 plus shipping, email Gary at [email protected] if you are interested.

I have Gary's tank in both my R54's. Also I face the tank outlet to the front and mounted the UAT and Pump on the shelf just in front of the wing. Keeps a bit more of the weight in front of the CG and makes the plumbing easier. I never see any air in my UAT.

There's no doubt about it! With a little extra work the R-54 is the best looking sport/trainer jet out there right now

How long did it take you guys to complete the R54? I've had mine since August and I've just completed both wing assemblies.

Redline 7000,
Don't feel bad, I've had mine since mid July and just finished up the wing a few weeks ago. I think I'm working slow to hold off making the turbine purchase.

I had my second R54 ready to cover in three weeks of part time work. Took a lot longer to finish and install all the stuff.

Gentlemen, My R54 is a little more than 1/2 way done and I am just starting to assemble the Boat Tail area. I see that the wing mount block (for the bolts) is attached to the Boat Tail. The Boat Tail is attached to the fuse sides and the balsa sheeting on the bottom of the fuse. Is the Boat Tail attached by any additional means to the fuse ? I just want to make sure I am not omitting something. Thanks. Bob

Sounds like you've got it right. The small leftover portion of the boat tail jig is important too for tying things together. You are right in recognizing that this is a critical part of the structure and needs to be built well - no skimping on the glue! There really is a lot of gluing surface in this area and it ends up plenty strong.

Is the elevator control horn pad shown on the plans anywhere? The manual says to refer to the plans and offset it from the centerline so the horn will end up in the center I guess. Just want to know before I "wing" it. Thanks.

You just need to find where the pushrod exits the rear of the fuse (should be on the middle of the fuse exit).
Then place the horn on the elevator so it lines up with the pushrod. Place the pad so the horn "foot" is central on the pad.

I've only finished the wing, and now the vertical and horizontal stabs. Nothing you haven't seen "twice" in your own shop. I'm going to try to put some real time in on it so there will be more balsa dust on it as opposed to just regular dust. I will post pics when covering begins sometime in ????????????. I've seen a nice red , white and blue scheme on an L-39 that looks highly visible.
