Operated correctly -they all start fine - same carb on the ZDZ or the 3W- A Tillotson- If this is your first shot at gas - hopefully you will see various setups -of current model engines before you buy. ask around - opinions are free and you will have to educate yourself .
Unless you get first hand info ---- ignore it.
The" my buddy says" info is very speculative.

I have a ZDZ 80 RV and a new 3W, I like them both.
I did find that the ZDZ 80 RV ( not the new J model) was hard to start at times, mine has a Walbro carb. It would flood easy and it took some time to get it setup so that I had a good routine down.
I find with a separate fill line to the tank, and single line from carb to tank ( a 3 line system) it was more consistent in starting. I also retarded my ignition pickup on the hub just a little, what a difference, much simple to start now so its a none issue. Its a smooth powerful motor no doubt and I am happy with it. 200 plus flights on that one.
The 3W is new and have not had it in the air yet. Starts easy, I like the setup, 5mm prop bolts vs 4mm for the ZDZ. I find that the 4mm bolts strip the heads in time. Not a big deal but still more user frendly with the 5mm.
Also I like the clip on spark plug boot on the 3W, the ZDZ uses a little allen key. Not a big deal again just a preferance.
Will the 3W last, seems like a good design, I like the 3 bearings on the crank vs 2 for the ZDZ but then again the ZDZ has been holding up well.
The 3W is smooth too, and makes good power. More than the older ZDZ 80 RV, as much as the new ZDZ 80 RVJ, maybe but its a not as pricey.
Good luck with that.
