HAVE YOU SEEN A MID-AIR AT A COMP??
HI THERE GENTS I AM TRYING TO DO A LITTLE INVESTIGATION ON THIS SUBJECT AS IT BECAME APPARENT TO ME THAT EVERY IMAC COMP IVE BEEN AT HAS HAD A MID AIR.
IM A BIG FAN OF IMAC AND WILL BE COMPETING THIS YEAR NO MATTER WHAT........BEING AND OLD PATTERN GUY I JUST LOOKED AT THE NEW STYLE COMPACT SCHEDULES (I THINK THEY STARTED LAST YR) AND THOUGHT ABOUT 2 AIRPLANES IN A VERY TIGHT SPACE.....SPECIALLY IF YOU FLY A CLOSE AND SLOW STYLE.
THE COMPS I HAVE SEEN THERE WERE TWO FLIGHTLINES IN EACH CIRCUMSTANCE FLYING WITHIN 100FEET OF ONE ANOTHER........AND I DONT KNOW IF THIS IS THE NORM?
HOPEFULLY ITS A RARE OCCURENCE BUT IT WOULD BE INTERESTING TO GATHER SOME INFO
PS
MIGHT JUST BE ME!!!![sm=frown.gif]

Two flightlines is the norm, unless attendance is low. Just make sure your caller is also spotting for you and if he calls avoidance, do something now to avoid a collision. We have avoidance rules at events because no sequence is worth a plane.

It happens.
Nothing you can do about it. There are so many people competing now that running at least two flightlines is a must.
Good callers and pilots that can hold lines in X-winds helps.

I have been to, flown in, or been the CD of well over 35 scale aerobatics contests since 1998. In that time I have witnessed exactly ONE mid-air during the actual competition. Every one of these contests ran two lines. Most had over 40 to 45 entries.

Been to 3 events(hopefulyy more this season!!) so far. Haven't seen any mid-airs yet but it's probly' just a matter of time. Have seen 2 instances of avoidances being called. also saw one where the pilot forgot to call it and zeroed the rest of the sequence due to being out of position. Guess some pilots get too focused on just their aircraft, and if the caller is having the same problem then that would be a recipe for alot of expensive confetti[X(]!

let's see...over three years CD'ed about 20 plus events, only mid air occurred before actual competition when pilots were practicing. the full size F-15 that came straight down the runway at 500' wasn't all that close to the airplanes that were in the air, (one was above it) but it did get our attention - and that's a mid air that everyone would have heard about.

I know this is an IMAC Forum BUT:
At a Pattern contest in Andersonville Ga. Last year There must have been 6 or more birds mating in flight.
I swear it was like a episode of the twilight Zone. Then there was another 2 or 3 that had Radio Lock out or Wing Failure in flight.
I have been to combat contest that didn't have that kind of carnage.
Now an insight as to why. In pattern you have the BOX. Center pole And you have the 150 meter poles. Basicly telling the pilots to fly an area in a specific airspace. As the pilots skills of presenting better emprove there is more chance 2 planes flying the same line.
At least with IMAC NO defined box.
As Homer Simpson would say "Doh!"
