31 cc for $59.99
Harbor freight has Yardmachine 31 cc 15" trimmers for 59.99 right now. Reconditioned. Any one know who makes these motors (ryobi;mac;homelite) ? This a good deal or not?

medic976,
These are rear carb rear exhaust 31cc -- that makes them Ryobi. They are Yard Machines, owned by MTD, which owns the Ryobi license for trimmers. If these are the newer models, they will have a fan shroud that's integrally cast onto the crankcase, unlike the earlier models that were bolted on and easy to remove. You can still convert these, but it will take some sawing/grinding or milling to get them pared down. If these are recent models they will also probably be twin-ring units (good) but may have a single-needle carb (bad). But why pay 59.99? I just checked HF and the ones shown below were $49.99. Go buy!!!

RE: 31 cc for $59.99
Can anyone help me here, I have been converting and flying Ryobi's for about 18 months. So far these conversions have all been single ring 28's and 31's and one twin ring. Reciently i aquired 3 cross flow moters, one out of an old Ryobi weed basher and 2 from McCullock blower vac's. All are the same in that they have a practicly identicle crank case assembly to the Ryobi but the barrel is cross flow and bolts down wth 4 bolts instead of two. The magnito has cooling fins on both sides.
There are no identifying marks, numbers or brand on them, would anyone know what make they are. Would help when comes to bying parts me thinks.

stewartnr,
If your side-carb/side exhaust engines have fins on both sides of the flywheel and have 5-bolt rear covers they are probably 28cc McCullochs, possibly 32cc. Unfortunately, MAC went out of business, and I haven't seen this engine in any other brands.

I happen to have a Mac .28 fresh from conversion by Brilleli, if anyone is interested. I was going to use it for an airboat, but it probably will never get off the drawing board. I had it converted because I had the trimmer lying around.
